MSSQL 2008 R2: Change Server Collation Steps, with user DBs already of desired collation

On the default instance of SQL Server 2008 R2, I want to change the server collation from the usual US default SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS to an application vendor's required collation, Latin1_General_BIN.  I understand that changing the server collation is essentially the same as changing the collation of databases master and model -- is that a fair statement? But my main question is, since there are user databases on the server that I would like to preserve, can I not simply detatch the user DBs prior to performing the server collation change, and then reattach?  The database collation of the user databases is already set to Latin1_General_BIN.  This article, Setting and Changing the Server Collation, at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179254.aspx says that to preserve the user databases, I should script all DB objects out, and bulk-copy all data out, because the DBs will have to be recreated and repopulated.  Can someone explain why I ought not simply detach and reattach the user DBs, given that they are already of the desired collation (i.e., the same collation that I will be changing the server collation to)? Your help much appreciated. -Tom

Easy install package vs MsSQL server 2008

Is there anything i wont be able to do if i use SQL Server Express Database from the downlod install package offered on asp.net? Ive used MSSQL server 2008 and 2005, but to be honest i think it might be overkill cause im not very familiar with those applications. Will i be able to remote connect to my webbhotel host and remotely modify the database on the remote server?Now i have a mess, i have installed both MsSQL 2005 and 2008 and im not even sure wich database is created with what. I would love to just have one simple setup, but im not sure if i can manage to migrate the databases to the new computer with this easy install package.The easy install package contains: ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC Visual Studio 2010 Express Development Tool SQL Server Express DatabaseThanks for your time!

MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups install to Win 7 - Compatibility issues

I attempted to install MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups from the DVD to a Win 7 workstation.  Error "This Program has known compatibility issues.  The directions are to download the MSSQL Server Service Pack.  I downloaded SP 1 and SP 2.  Neither SP will install.  The DVD install also has a run option displayed along with the Compatibility message.  I select "Run" and it appeared to install, with Start\Programs\Microsoft SQL Server 2008\Configuration Tools\ SQL Server Installation Center 64bit.  However, running the 64bit installation process results in no change.  My question is how to install the MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups on the Win 7 machine.  I would appreciate your thoughts.

I have MSSQLSERVER (Running - \\D1XFZ9C1\SQLEXPRESS-MSSQL Server) running. Under my Programs I have MicroSoft SQL Server 2005 but the only items listed are Configuration Tools. Am I missing something? I am trying to run a CREATE DATABASE query in order to create a database for PRO WPF using VB 2008 (Visual Studio 2008) but I don't know where to run it. Can anyone please help as I am new to this.

MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups install to Win 7 - Compatibility issues

The DVD install for MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups to Win 7 fails due to known compatibility issues.  I asked for help in the Getting Started with SQL Server Forum and followed a recommendation to slipstream installation with SP1. I followed the procedures at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/joaol/archive/2009/03/20/how-to-install-sql-server-2008-with-sp1-built-in-slipstream-installation.aspx I then ran Setup.exe from the C:\SQLServer2008 folder.  It failed with the following .Net Framework error.  (I previously installed .Net Framework Version 4 which is required by the application needing SQL Server.)  Thanks for help. Microsoft.NET Framework Unhandled exception has occurred in your application.  If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.  If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. I am trying to change a SQL Server Agent account name, but it asks me a password. The standard password I typed in don't match and I don't remember what it is. Is there a way to reset the password?

I have 2008 SQL Server Enterprise on Windows.

Linked Server to Password Protected Access Database

I want to create linked server in SQL 2005 with Ms Access 2003 Database. I have used following commands to create linked server.

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
@server = N'TestLinkServer',
@provider = N'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
@srvproduct = N'Access',
@datasrc = N'D:\Test.mdb',
@provstr = Null

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin

With above command linked server successfully create and can run SQL query against linked server. But if i set Database password to MS Access 2003 Database, then it gives following error message.

The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "TestLinkServer" reported an error. Authentication failed.

Any ideas?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I just had a question regarding MSSQL server installation f

Hello folks,

I have been recently discussing with a group of blind individuals the best way for us to be able to install the Express versions of SQLServer 2008 with ease, and best of all, success.  I was wondering if deep on this site or another, there was an ISO image I could possibly grab since I find the online installation center very confusing and also very unfriendly to those like me who must rely on screen readers in order to do their everyday computing tasks.  Any input on this is greatly appreciated.  I am blind myself, and due to a failed installation, and ultimately frustrating experience with this, I now have a desktop workstation at home that has been corrupted with left over remnants of SQLServer 2008 Express R2.  What is my best way at fixing this, and ultimately being able to install it so that I can now continue with my experimentation as planned?  Thanks.

sa's password in SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

In the SQL Server 2005 Express I can chose  the expert mode during the installation. This enables me to set the password  of the user “sa”.

Now I tried to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express but I had no possibility to change / set the password of the user “sa”.

I read in the internet that the default-password of the user “sa” should be a blank password. Since in SQL Server 2008 R2 Express there was no way to set / change “sa”’s password I tried to login with a blank password. But this also didn’t worked.

So my questions are:

1.    Where during the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express setup can I set / change the “sa”’s password.
2.    Where in the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express can I set / change the “sa”’s password after the installation.
3.    What’s the default password of “sa” in SQL Server 2008 R2 Express?
4.    Why a blank password for the unmodified “sa” account didn’t worked?

Thank in advance for all your helpful answers.

How to hide SQL Server password from user in an Windows Forms Application?

Using - VS 2005, SQL Server 2005 Express, Windows Forms Application

I am unable to find a way that hides the password to connect to database in case of a Windws Forms Application.

- app.config is accessible to the user, so connection strings an be read.

- app.config can't be encrypted as in case of ASP.NET applications

- hardcoding the password in the application in connectionstring still makes it possible to be discovered by a user

Validating Password for a SQL Server authenticated Login

Is there any way I could validate the password for a user ( SQL server authenticated login ), using a stored procedure?

Here is what I am trying to do :-

1. Connect to DB using the login and password.

2. In the application for certain deletes the password is reconfirmed.

3. When the user re-enters the password - it needs to be re-validated.

SQL Server Management Studio 2005 forgets password?

I have a strange problem, every month the Connect to Server dialog in SQL Server 2005 Mgmt Studio will forget my passwords to all the servers I connect (yes I do have the Remember Password checked) to.

Anyone have this problem?

There is no "reset" or password clearing function I'm aware of?

This is a pain in to keep re-entering them as they are 40+ cryptic characters long.  Doing  a Google and I see this problem appears to be pretty common:
