How to write the manifest file for Reg-Free COM if there are two DLL files? ( 32-bit and 64-bit vers

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 25, 2010    Points: 0   Category :.NET Framework

Our program, Core.exe is using two different COM dll files for 32-bit and 64-bit OS.

Normally, the user will be required to register either one of the dll files using 'regsvr32' command in Command Prompt window.

However we decided to use Reg-Free COM using a manifest file Core.exe.manifest located alongside Core.exe.

The problem is, now we have two DLL files, 32bit.dll and 64bit.dll.. how do we configure the manifest file?

For example if there's only one dll file, my manifest file should look like:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0">
 <file name="32bit.dll">
  <comClass clsid="{9DFC3817-ACDA-4BB4-C74B-6507DF3A25E5}"
       description="Some Class"

Since the 64bit.dll is using the same clsid, tlbid and all.. is it possible to specify two file names in the 'file name' field above? not sure how to handle this..

Problem with security on ISS?, why can i write HTML file but not XML files

hi guys

I have a web app the manages articles, users can generate articles which we store in the database and also in a folder inside the application in html.  We also have the ability to generate real time alerts, to targetted audiences but the list of audiences was cached from an sql query on the web server and at times, the cache was cleared by the server. so i wrote an http module, and the module now runs the query using a timer, and this then wrties the audiences to an xml file within a folder in the same application (same as my html files)

Now the weird thing is im getting the system.io unauthorised access exception, when i try to delete and overwrite the xml file.  Yet this doesnt happen when i write the html files.

Now although my users do login, there credentials are maintained via an sql database table, not windows security or the asp.net security model.

Ive checked the folder that we publish our applications up to (its a mapped folder like a virtual directory), and i cannot see the network service or asp.net machine accounts usually used in iis5 or 6.  But i dont have the ability to change this anyway.

Why would the html file write fine, and the xml file throw this error.

I also changed my code to used HttpRuntime.AppDom

Registration Free COM using manifest file embeded in Plugin DLL?

Searching google online for 1 whole week and I still can't get this solved... please help!

I'm suppose to build a Plugin (will be called Plugin.dll after compiled) which resides in a main framework (Framework.exe after compiled), everything is written in C# except the C++ COM object (ComObject.dll) which is required by my plugin to function.

The hierarchy looks something like this:

    Framework.exe --> Plugin.dll --> ComObject.dll

I was provided with the main framework, the ComObject.dll and a manifest file Framework.exe.manifest.

Currently I have two options of getting my program to work:

Option 1: In Command Prompt, type in 'regsvr32 ComObject.dll' to register the COM object, add the COM reference in my plugin source code, build away and run it.

Option 2: In the application properties of my framework source code, add in the manifest file to get it embedded into the Framework.exe. Either this or manually embed the manifest file using mt.exe, both works. This works even if I unregister it later using 'regsvr32 /u ComObject.dll' in Command Prompt.

Code Name WinFS: Revolutionary File Storage System Lets Users Search and Manage Files Based on Conte

One of the monumental problems organizations face today is aggregating information that's stored in disparate formats. Knowledge workers have long wanted to be able to search for content independent of format. The next version of the Windows operating system, code-named "Longhorn," boasts a new storage subsystem that makes that task easier. That subsystem, code-named "WinFS," allows the user to perform searches based on the metadata of the stored item, regardless of what type of file it is or which application created it. This article covers the basic architecture of WinFS and explains how to use the WinFS managed API.

Having issues with the webservice to write file

Is there anything extra I have to do with the webservice. If the aspx page with the upload control writes to the same "uploads" folder, then it works fine. Currently, only the asp.net account is permitted to write to that directory. When the webservice was introduced in it's place, I'm seeing permission issue stating the "Unauthorized" message. What's working: - User goes to .aspx page and use the upload control to upload the file What's not working - User goes to a fat client, and sends the file in a byte array to the webservice - It works if the webservice is on the same computer, but, fails if the fat client is run on a different computer Best Regards, Rajib Bahar http://www.rajib-bahar.com | http://www.linkedin.com/in/rajibb | http://www.twitter.com/rajib2k5

Write XML files from DataSet

How can i write complex XML from a dataset? I use DataSet.writexml, and it returns simple XML. If i write out the schema, using DataSet.WriteXmlSchema, the schema is correct and the same as the XSD.   Example (DataSet.WriteXmlSchema)   <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes" ?> - <xs:schema id="ISEFTSessionLoginRequest" xmlns="" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:msdata="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-msdata"> - <xs:element name="ISEFTSessionLoginRequest" msdata:IsDataSet="true" msdata:UseCurrentLocale="true"> - <xs:complexType> - <xs:choice minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded"> - <xs:element name="Envelope"> - <xs:complexType> - <xs:sequence>   <xs:element name="Username" type="xs:string" minOccurs="0" />   <xs:element name="Password" type="xs:string" minOccurs="0" />   <xs:element name="ClientVersion" type="xs:string" minOccurs="0" />   <xs:element name="ClientTrackNum" type="xs:string" minOccurs="0" />   <xs:element name="SessionId" type="xs:string" minOccurs="0"

WPF Desktop App - Write file permissions

I have been working on a WPF desktop app for a while now, and I am struggling to deploy it.  The problem seems to be that the app does not have permissions to save the file I am creating.  Although I should say the code works fine running locally through Visual Studio. I am OneClick deploying the app, and just want to give it full access although just knowing how to give it write permission is all I need.  The app is only to be used by a few members of staff on our intranet, so trust is not really an issue here. If anyone can point me in the direction of a quick solution that would be great, and you'll save me alot of time trying to figure out all the documentation which I am failing to work out what to do with so far. Additional info: I am deploying over a web address, which I think means Internet Zone. Thanks John

How to read/write files > 2GB ?

I need to read very large NTFS files (> 2GB in length).  But Filestream.Read/Write only supports 32-bit int offset and count values (unless there's an overload I can't find) How can I avoid having to read these files in 2GB "chunks" and then manually re-compose the file from the chunks? Or should I be using an alternative to Filestream that supports reads/writes > 2GB?   What??? Thanks! DT
