How to add images to Announcement based news items?

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 25, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I'm currently working on an Intranet project where we're creating a news site (among many sites). Initially we moved towards a publishing site for this particular issue, using the Article Page content type. However, this was not a suitable approach (really rejected by end users) considering their skills and background. Therefore we went with the Announcement based approach. This is fine (end users' are happy) and we've customized a bunch of things (like itemstyle, forms, and whatnot).

Now we would like to add images to the news articles. We're using the CQWP to display the news items. Really, we would like to add an image to each news item. In the list view we would display a small picture and for a particular item display the image in full in the upper left corner of the "article". The problem is how to add the image to the a news item, or add a relationship between lists/libraries to achieve the behavior of an image as a part of a news item from the end users' perspective. I've looked at the possibility of converting the list to a document library but I simply cannot achieve the same column type functionality in that case (e.g, cannot set the "Enhanced rich text (Rich text with pictures, tables, and hyperlinks)" option for the Multiple lines

Vector Graphics: Build Flexible, Lightweight XML-Based Images for ASP.NET Using Scalable Vector Grap

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), a W3C graphics standard built around XML, is one of several vector graphics technologies that allows fast, lightweight drawings such as charts and graphs to be rendered on the fly in an appropriate viewer. There are many advantages to such vector graphics, including conservation of bandwidth and storage media, and flexibility. This article explains these benefits and shows you how to easily add powerful, dynamic, interactive visual elements to your Web applications.

Dynamically display images based on a variable - JavaScript

I am trying to bring in a specific image based on a variable brought into the page with a querystring. I initially thought having an array with the image's URL in it would work, but I am having problems associating the array index with the variable. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Dropdown lists - showing items based on value

Hi, i have over 100 items all loaded in a dropdown list. They all are assigned a value between 1-10 which represent 10 categories.

When certain buttons are clicked, i want the dropdown list to display only items with a value "1" or "2", etc.

How can this be done?

Deleting items from a list based on a stored procedure

          foreach (SPListItem listItem in collListItems)
            var result = db.sp_MOSSCloseCase(Convert.ToInt32(listItem["Case Number"]));
            if (result == listItem["Case Number"])

Obviously I can't delete items in a collection within a Foreach loop. Problem is that the stored procedure is to return the case number in the DB only if there is a completed date(case being closed). So i thought if (result != null) then move the result to a List or something. Then go through the list and delete items where results = item["Case Number"] but result is never null... nor does it ever == listItem["Case Number"]

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to get the result values into a list and then delete them from the SPList.

Link images from Image library to Announcement

I have an user requirement to show the Announcement list as a News site (like Channel News) such that whenever user views the announcement the related image should be displayed in the right panel.

Please suggest how to achieve this.

Repeating items in calendar break after creating a site based on a template

We have the following issue when using a calendar in a site that is based on a template.

We add a calendar to a blank site. This site we save as a template in the solution gallery.

We then create a new site based on a template. After creating a repeating item in the calendar list, the end date of the repeating item will be the end date of the repetition. So the new appointment is spread across 4 weeks for a repeating appointment that repeats for 4 weeks.

If you connect the calendar to Outlook the appointments are displayed correct.

Does anybody have similar results and can confirm this is a bug?

Web part to retrieve List Items based on configurable property

Is this possible?

jQuery: Styling DropDownList Alternating Items (Rows)

In the following example, I will show how you can style any asp:dropdownlist very easily.

The example demonstrates how you can change alternating row items background color, using the fadeTo() to add a nice touch in the dropdownlist. You can change alt rows with a couple lines.

Hide a repeater in ASP.NET C# if the DataSource contains no items?

I have an ASP.NET page that uses a repeater nested within another repeater to generate a listing of data. It's to the effect of the following:
In the (C#) code-behind I'm basically using LINQ to pull a listing of information from an XML document and bind that information to the first repeater.

Searching for the answer to this, it seems the method is to determine whether the data for the nested repeater is empty. If it is, then you set the visibility of the repeater to false.

5 GridView Themes Based on Google's Personalized Homepage (igoogle)

One of the silly features I have found that I like about igoogle is how the pages color palette changes depending upon the time of day. So as the day progresses from morning to afternoon to evening the colors on the page change as well. Like I said, I know this is a silly feature, but I like it. And I have asked around a little bit and seems like other people like it to. To get a better idea of how the colors change, here are the background images from a few of the HTML elements.

Creating SharePoint items with CreateItemActivity

Instead of creating new list items from code in your workflow you can use CreateItemActivity. CreateItemActivity can be used for creating list items or files. Properties of interest for this activity are the following (most of them are self-explanatory):

Creating Sites/Lists/List Items under Current User Context in SharePoint By Using SPUserToken

Usually we do this by performing the action under RunWithElevatedPrivileges method and updating the listitem using SPListItem.SystemUpdate() method (see here). but this approach has its own flaws like (RunWithElevatedPrivileges will run under system account, we cannot use SystemUpdate for SPSite,SPWeb,SPList, since it runs under system we will "CreatedBy" by as SystemAccount).

HttpContext.Items and Server.Transfer/Execute

The problem was basically that when a Server.Transfer call was applied the script container (and also various ClientScriptProxy script embedding routines) would potentially fail to load up the specified scripts.

Reading and Writing Images From a Windows Mobile Database using UltraLite 10(C#)

Periodically I get a request for information on how to read and write binary data to a database running on Windows Mobile. If you search the Internet you can typically find examples that are available on Windows Desktops or allow you to read and write to a local file system. The problem is that it can take a bit of work to get this code to work on Windows Mobile accessing a database.

Ultimately you might be asking, why would I want to store and image in a database? Well in an environment where you synchronizing data between a local mobile database and a consolidated (central) database this can be extremely useful. Imagine if an insurance adjuster went to an accident scene, took a picture of a damaged car, loaded it into his Windows Mobile database and then replicated that image up to the Insurance headquarters for approval. All of this could be done in a very short period of time when using images in the database. Another good example might be a doctor who was waiting for a patient chart to become available. If you could store the image in a database this chart could be sent down to the doctor's device once it became available.

For this article I am not going to get into how to synchronize the images to and from a remote and central database as this is typically fairly straightforward when using a data synchronization technologies like MobiLink
