No Servers listed under Database Engine in SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Where to begin. It's late so I hope I can be clear. I have installed SQL Server 2008. I am running Windows Server 2008 R2. I have installed SQL Server four times and I continue to have issues connecting to the Database Engine. Installation has gone without a problem at least to my knowledge I have not been presented with any errors. I have also created a local administrator account called "spadmin" to use to connect to the SQL Server database and to use with SharePoint 2010. Which brings me to the reason why I want to run SQL Server - I want to evaluate the latest SharePoint Server 2010 and WSS. Unfortunately, I have not been able to go beyond installing SQL Server and connecting to the database, because there is no database instance showing under the Database Engine, except under Integration Services. I have the following services installed: SQL Acitivey Directory Helper Service SQL Full-text-Filder Daemon Launcher SQL Server SQL Server Agent SQL Server Analysis Service SQL Server Browser SQL Server Integration Services 10.0 SQL Server Reporting Services SQL Server VSS Writer Am I missing something? I have been following several online instructions on how to install SQL Server 2008 and I can't seem to find where I may have gone wrong. After I install SQL Server 2008 am I supposed to see the default instance (MSSQLSERVER) listed under the Database Eng

Error when running an SQL script to restore a database on SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

Hi, At work, I use SQL Server 2008 Express running on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. At home, I also use SQL Server 2008 Express running on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. Whenever I do work on the database at work, I usually restore the database at home (or vice versa) I have been using the following SQL scripts to back up the database and to restore the same database (at work or at home). BackupRealEstate.sql USE Master BACKUP DATABASE [RealEstate] TO DISK = N'F:\My Documents\My Database\RealEstate.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'RealEstate-Full Database Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 GO RestoreRealEstate.sql USE Master RESTORE DATABASE [RealEstate] FROM DISK = N'F:\My Documents\My Database\RealEstate.bak' WITH  FILE = 1, NOUNLOAD, REPLACE, STATS = 10 GO Everything worked fine until I replaced my 8yo home computer with a newer and faster one. My new home computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium and I use the latest SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. When I tried to run the above restore SQL script, I got the following error message: Msg 3101, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. There was no other application/process using this database. Can someone please help me? Regards,

SQL Server 2008 Windows Authentication Mode fails for Database Engine, error 18456

I installed SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (10.0.1600.22.080709-1414) on a Windows Vista 32-bit development machine with Windows Authentication Mode only (no SQL Server Authentication).   Since this is a development machine, I saw no need for Mixed Mode when I did the install.  The SQL Server Management Studio allows me to login to Analysis Services, Integration Services, Reporting Services, BUT NOT the Database Engine!Windows Authentication for the Database Engine gives the following error: EventID: 18456Login failed for user MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>]The 'fix' I have found online is to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine.  Unfortunately, I can't since I didn't install SQL Server Authentication mode (only Windows Authentication Mode).  It appears my only recourse is to uninstall, then reinstall in Mixed mode, then to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine. Before I do so, does anyone know of a better approach?Scott D Duncan

0x80040154 error processing a cube from SQL Server 2008 R2 x64 database engine to OLAP Server 2000 x

I recently upgrade from SQL Server 2000 x32 to SQLServer 2008 R2 x64 but only the database engine not the Analysis Server, I used to use this code to proces the cubes.

http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/jeffs/archive/2008/10/27.aspx

but now it do not  work more with the error:

I found this article:

Upsizing Database from Access 2007 to SQL Server Express 2008

I have recently downloaded and installed SQL Server Express 2008 on to my Windows XP SP3 machine, I have a large MS Access 2007 database (.accdb) I wish to export out to SQL Server. I am using the 'upsizing wizard' that is found on the 'Database Tools' tab of Access 2007. Clicking on the 'Database Tools' tab and then on the 'SQL Server' button starts the Upsizing wizard. On the first page of which I select the 'Create new database' option, the next page asks 'What SQL Server would you like to use for this database?' it already has '(local)' entered into the text box, so I leave that unchanged, I tick the trusted connection box and name the new SQL Server database and then click 'Next'. But I get the following error (it appears in a Windows information message box):

Title: Microsoft SQL Server Login
Message Text:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 2
[Microsft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]ConnectionOpen(Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQL State: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

PS. I have successfully used the upsizing wizard to export the same Access database into SQL Server Express 2005 on another machine.

What am I doing wrong this time?

Issue when using Distrib.exe to synchronize database with SQL Server 2008 Express

Hi

I am using SQL Server 2008 Express. I created a new DB and then used Distrib.exe to create and populate the tables. It worked fine. However then I deleted one of the tables and ran the command again from command prompt. It did not pick up the table that I had dropped.  I did not get any error messages but just a message saying, No replicated transactions are available. I checked the snapshot. The table I dropped is in the Snapshot. I am using a transactional Publication and Pull Subscription.  Any ideas why the the deleted table is being missed by Distrib??

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

SQL Server 2008 Developer Installation Error - Database Engine Failure

SQL Server Express R2 Database Engine fails to install on XP Home (SP3)

I have had multiple failed attempts at installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Express on an elderly but reliable machine running XP Home with SP3.
The support files and management tools loaded OK when I de-selected the database engine.  I was installing as a user with administrator rights.
I wanted to start the DB as a service following boot without a user logged on.

The failure appeared as a message a 'Library not registered' at stage Slp_Config_SQLEngine_ADHlpr_Cpu32.  I cancelled at this point (although in other attempts I let it run on with similar, unsuccessful results).

Other posts covering failed installation do not appear to cover the same problem.  If they do, I am afraid it is my limited understanding!

The summary log file is below and what I think are the relevant lines from the detail are given after.

Can anyone help identify the cause and suggest what I need to do to rectify it?

Many thanks.

MS SQL Server 2008 - Database Engine problem

Hi,

I need to create a new database for our GFI Archiver. Unfortunately, there is a problem with connection to Database Engine.

Everytime when I try to connect to DE I have these errors:

1. error:18456, severity:14, state:1

2.error:233, severity:20, state:0

I am not really sure how the SQL Server was set-up so it is difficult to say what type of passwords were set-up.

Our server is connected to our Domain and I am logged as a Domain administrator on the server.

I tried different passwords (admin, local admin) and different type of authentication without any results.

I can connect to the all services apart of database engine and I have access to the Windows 2008R2 server's "services" as well.

I can not access to the existing databases either and I can not create database even using Analysis server.

Could you help me please?

Thank you,

Regards,

Sebastian

sql server 2008 r2 install does not create database engine, also mmc creates error "Failed to create

I am loading sql server 2008 r2 developer edition into Windows Vista Home Basic. Product loads correctly with no error messages; except will not create database engine. And will not create integration services. When I try to open MMC, I will get error "MMC could not initialize the snap-in. Product may not have been installed correctly."

I understand this is a known issue for SQL Server 2008 RD installing on Windows Vista? What is the workaround or fix? Hot fixes available for this issue from support.microsoft.com do not install on my Windows Vista Home Basic machine.

sql server 2008 adventureworks database

dear Friends

For my MCTS 70 -433 examination, I recently installed sql server 2008 and installed the sample databases too. but my issue is, in that book they have mentioned a database called "AdventureWorks2008" and the nice thing is I don't have a such a database with me in my sql server 2008.

And the query is

-- MERGE Statement
USE AdventureWorks2008
MERGE INTO	Sales.SalesOrderDetailHistory AS SODH
USING Sales.SalesOrderDetail AS SOD
ON SODH.SalesOrderID = SOD.SalesOrderID
AND SODH.SalesOrderDetailID = SOD.SalesOrderDetailID
WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN
INSERT (LineTotal, SalesOrderID, SalesOrderDetailID, CarrierTrackingNumber, OrderQty
, ProductID, SpecialOfferID, UnitPrice, UnitPriceDiscount
, rowguid, ModifiedDate, Cancelled)
VALUES(LineTotal, SalesOrderID, SalesOrderDetailID, CarrierTrackingNumber, OrderQty
, ProductID, SpecialOfferID, UnitPrice, UnitPriceDiscount
, rowguid, ModifiedDate, DEFAULT)
WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN
UPDATE SET SOHD.Cancelled = 'True'
OUTPUT $action , inserted.* ;

Please help me to overcome this issue and let me know where can I download that database too.

Thanking you

happy Coding
