Sharepoint 2010 - Lists not displaying Edit (Link to item) for Users with Edit Only access

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 24, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I am using Sharepoint 2010.  I have several lists whose view includes the column "Edit (Link to Item)" in the default view.  I am the site admin so when I view the list the "Edit" column appears with the small "paper and pencil" icon and it works when clicked.

I needed some users to only be able to view and edit existing items (not add or delete).  So I have created a site level permissions that I copied from "Read" and only checked the "Edit Items  -  Edit items in lists, edit documents in document libraries, and customize Web Part Pages in document libraries" under Lists.

This new permission level does allow users to see the edit menu item on the standard "Title" hyperlink dropdown, but in the"Edit" column there isn't an icon or any clickable link to edit in the column.  Only from the menu.  Its as if the icon won't appear if I don't give them Add capability which is what I don't want.

 Thanks for any tips,

SharePoint - Item - Edit Properties - Access Denied Error

I have a SharePoint 2007 EE Site  (with patches up to version running on Windows Server 2008 & SQL Server 2008.
I ported an existing site from a different domain to this server by backing up/restoring the content database. The site is running fine.

I added a new sub-site and here is where I have the issue. If I create a document library, add a document, and then use the drop-down on the item to pick "edit properties" I bounce to the SP Error: Access Denied screen. My account is a site admin and has full access to the sub-site.
I can view the properties fine.

When I try to upload a document I get the access denied error message if some of the meta data properties are marked "required". The document is still uploaded. I also get the same error when I try to edit an item in a list.

I can view/edit the properties in Data sheet view fine. The libraries on the existing sites work fine. It only seems to be an issue on new sub-sites.

It almost seems like a permission problem generating the property edit forms. There is nothing in the SP log files.

PowerShell script to add/edit ContentEditor webpart on SharePoint 2010

Hi all, I'm new to PowerShell scripting with SharePoint. Following are the requirements that were given to me. Can any one direct me in the right direction interms of writing the script and how to save and execute the script? I am aware of Cmdlets. 1. Cycle through all sites in site collection 2. For each site, retrieve all document libraries 3. Look for specific CMV document library name (ie value communication, key business drivers, etc)          o add content editor web part if doesn't exist          o add/update appropriate description based on the document library name Thanks in advance...

"Only their own" allows users to edit, then shows access denied page

I am managing a WSS 3.0 portal.  I have created custom lists where a group has contribute permissions.  Under List Settings|Advanced Settings, when I set Edit Access to "Only their own" or "None", my test users can see the Edit Icon and the Edit Item menu option, and bring up the Edit Form.  When they click "OK", they get the Access Denied page.  My experience in that past is that they should not even been shown the option to edit, and they should get Access Denied if they somehow navigate to the EditForm.aspx page.  I even tested this on a brand new site, with three Links lists, each with different Edit Access Levels (All, None, Only their own).  I added one user with contribute permissions.  He had the same result: He could get all the way to EditForm.aspx, but got "Access Denied" when he submitted his changes.  What can I do to fix this?Christopher W. Access Denied/The workflow could not copy the item workflow error after Sharepoint 2010 upgrade

We have a sharepoint designer workflow that copies a document from one library to another on the same site.  Before the upgrade to 2007 it worked fine, but now with 2010 it gives an error and cancels the workflow when it gets to the copy list item step.   The error on the workflow page: The workflow could not copy the item. Make sure the source and destination lists have the same columns and column settings.  Access Denied   Specifically it is the "copy list item current item to documentlibrary" sharepoint designer workflow action.   I have given the system account full permissions to the library and double checked that all columns are the same in both libraries. Problems with access to external lists in SharePoint 2010

Our environment is SharePoint 2010 Enterprise, Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and SQL server 2008 R2.   We have External lists that access a local database in SharePoint SQL Server. When new lists are added and permissions are given in the SharePoint Central Administration the domain users had to be in the Windows administration group to access the lists.   Recently in the same environment the domain users were removed from Windows Administration user group and could access the external lists.   In another similar test server we found adding the domain users to Windows Administration does not give the new domain users access to External lists.   The inconsistency is the issue. Has anyone seen this issue or provide a possible solution?

Edit Item Link

Does anyone know if it's possible to create a hyperlink that would be identical to the "Edit Item" button when you're displaying a list item?   I want to get rid of the toolbar all together and just have a hyperlink for editing the current item.  I could just take the address that the Edit Item button leads to, but it goes to the specific Item ID.  I want to make it so that hyperlink changes to the Item ID of the list item that's currently being viewed. Does that make sense?  Any help is appreciated!

I use infopath 2007 created a task edit form and I use VS 2010 to create a sequential workflow.I want to use the custom tash edit form in the workflow. The problem I got is the InfoPath form doesn't get deployed to sharepoint. Sharepoint 2010, Constant prompt for credentials to edit office documents in a fqdn setup

Is there a solution to resolve the constant "Prompts" For user id's and passwords when a person tries to open/launch/edit office documents from sharepoint 2010.

My setup: sharepoint fqdn in the domain sp.domainname.local, The sharepoint server is a member of this internal domain. In dns I have local zone of sp.domainname.com with a cname that points to the internal sharepoint server. There is no issue in users accessing the server both internal and external, The issue arises when Office documents are launched from SP2010.

In central admin I have configured the alternate access mappings to be http://sp

I have also tried putting the fqdn dns name of the sharepoint server in IE8 trusted zone but
no luck, I still get credential prompts.

I think the issue might be that Office does not see that the files are coming from the fqdn of sp.domainname.com so hence the prompts.

Trying to fix this as right now its a total pita. I found some previous posts on this issue with SP2007 but found nothing that really addresses this in SP2010.

Thanks Paul

Sharepoint Foundation - Create and deploy custom edit/view forms for external lists

Firstly, we are using sharepoint foundation so Infopath forms are not an option for us.

We have a Visual Studio sharepoint project which deploys a complete sharepoint site. The site contains a number of external lists and we want to be able to create customised view/edit forms for these lists and add them to our Visual Studio project so they can be deployed as part of the new site. The idea is that we can deploy the solution to a fresh site with a default set of forms which can then be customised for different implementations of the site.

Here's the steps we have been using to try and do this:

1. Deploy the base project (BDC) to the sharepoint site

2. Create external lists based on the BDC content types

3. Use Sharepoint Designer to create new edit/view forms for the lists and set these as the default forms for the list

3. Save the site as a template

4. Import the template into a new Visual Studio project and select the lists we require. This gives us a List Definition, a pages module (with element file), an elements file and a schema file (both for the List Instance).

5. We then add the contents of the imported project to our main solution as follows:

  • Create a new List Definition (including List Instance)
  • Copy the contents of the imported Elements.xml to the Elements file for our List Instance.

Sharepoint Designer 2010 Can't edit Subsite

When trying to edit a subsite, I get a dialog box titled: 'Web Site Editing is Disabled':

The message content is: 'This web site has been configured to disallow editing with SharePoint Designer.  Contact your web site admin for more info.'

The subsite has inherited permission from the parent.

the parent site settings/SharePoint Designer options are all turned on.

The subsite site settings only have a link referring back to the parent site settings.

I am an owner and collection admin with Full Control.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in Advance!
