Storing .EXE Files in SharePoint

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 26, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

New to SharePoint.  We just started migrating directories to our SharePoint server, and have encountered an issue storing .EXE files.  The error message says that it is denied by the administrator, however our IT team believes you can not store .EXE in SharePoint and that it is a system limitation.

Could someone please confirm whether or not there is a restriction for the storage of .EXE files in SharePoint?

If this is just an administrator setup issue, is there a doc that would direct us how to remore this setting?

Thank you,

SharePoint document migration challenges when migrating files and folders

There are several challenges when migrating documents to Microsoft SharePoint. While these challenges can be overcome, they are a real pain if the migration source, content and file systems are not SharePoint friendly.

Add edit drop down menu so I can edit pdf files in SharePoint

I have a pdf file that I'd like to open and edit.  The pdf file just opens, and doesn't ask if it should be opened as a read only or edit option.  My colleague is able to select edit mode as a drill down, but I can't figure out how to add this functionality into my document library... does anyone have a solution?

sharepoint search pdf files using metadata and also the content inside pdf

I am a novice to sharepoint search can anyone give some ideas on how to integrate search at a subsite level (only to that subsite) which has pdf documents with metadata associated with it the search should also search the content within the pdf and libraries and list metatdata in Moss 2007

Migrate DB + files outside DB into SharePoint using SSIS and scripts

Hello, just wanted to ask a question about SSIS and SharePoint, any input will be greatly appreciated.... did search the forum but could not find anything....

So basically we have a SQL Server DB with the metadata ONLY, WITHOUT the related files(doc/ppt/pdf..etc) which should've been in the DB and they are on a separate web server inside folders. Each row in the DB has a key (column) which matches the related folder's name, so for row with ID #112, there's a folder named ID112 on the web server with the relevant files inside. There could be more than 8+ files for one folder.

Now, I think it is possible but just wanted to double check, would it be possible to use SSIS and some kind of a script to get the metadata inside the SQL DB AND the related files inside those folders, combine & relate them and upload them into SharePoint as a custom list with file attachments? would they display the attachment normally (like the paperclip icon in a sharepoint list...etc) I wonder if anyone has tried this...

Any guidance, thoughts, suggestions for other solutions, inputs will be great!!! Thank you!!

Updating Config Files in Sharepoint Farm

I am trying to update config files web.comnfig in the Virtual Directory of my server so that users are allowed to upload more that 50 MB of files in my IIS 7 server. Everytime i do the update it works fine but after few days when there are few changes then it removes the added elements itself and restore in the Original Stage. I used to edit my config files manually. I found a way of creating a config files and saving it to the Config Directory under 12 Hive in Server. Like the Content will be similar as follows <actions>    <add path="configuration/SharePoint/SafeControls">       <SafeControl          Assembly="System.Web, Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral,             PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"          Namespace="System.Web.UI.WebControls"          TypeName="*"          Safe="True"/>    </add>   </actions> I have to add following line <system.webServer>     <security>       <requestFiltering>         <requestLimits maxAllowedCon

Not always prompted for read-only or EDIT mode, when opening files with IE7, Sharepoint 3.0

Hello Everyone,   We use Sharepoint 3.0 and when I click on a document I get a pop up prompt that asks me whether I want to open the file in READ-ONLY or EDIT mode.   I use a machine with XP Pro that is running IE7.   A user called me today, also running IE7, and when he clicks to open a Sharepoint file he gets a different prompt - a simpler one that just offers OPEN or SAVE.   I don't care that his prompt looks different - the problem is that he is able to open the file, make edits, but then when he closes the file (using Excel) he isn't able to save his changes.   Excel only provides a save-as option for him.   This isn't a permission problem with his ID.   When I login to our Sharepoint 3.0 system as him, with his password (from my machine), I get the usual Read-Only / Edit prompt and when I open a file in EDIT mode I am able to save my changes with no problem.   Any thoughts on this?   Chris

SharePoint crawl errors on files which are not present

All, I'm noticing 2 errors in my crawl logs. Neither of the files exist anywhere on our site. The URLs are http://.../forms/repair.aspx and http://.../forms/combine.aspx and the error message is 'Error in the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Protocol Handler'. Our crawl normally takes about 3 and a half hours. Recently, it's been taking 5-6 hours. These 2 errors are logged at the end of the crawl. While the crawl is running, I see the success count growing and at about 3 and a half hours into the process, the success count stops growing. I'm not sure what the crawl is doing for the next 2 or so hours, but if finally logs the 2 errors mentioned earlier at the end of the crawl, then completes. I have tried resetting the crawled content and changing the index location of the SSP, but neither have worked.  I have also tried excluding the path to these two files with crawl rules, but that hasn't worked. I am on SharePoint 2007 SP2. Any ideas? Thanks

Storing large files (10gb) in MOSS.

Hello, We are planning to develop a portal with few lists in the portal. We have a requirement to store huge files of approximately 10GB in size. Can any one let me know If we can have a mechanism where in we can only save the file meta data to a MOSS list and save the actual file to a file share (Data Center)? I am looking forward to a generic service(WCF) which can perform this functionlity. If it is possible can some one provide a series of steps to achieve this. Thanks, kesari suresh

Powerpoint ppsx files open as read only in sharepoint with not option to edit

With Powerpoint 20007 in sharepoint(MOSS 2007) the PPSX files are opening in read only mode with no option to edit to be found. 2nd issue is ppsx files do not open on any persons computer as a show.  Is it possible to change this? How do I change this so I can edit the slides? Current "bad" solution is to save to local drive than upload them over the location  on sharepoint. Problem Saving Files to A Sharepoint 2010 Site from Office 2010: Saves locally by default rather tha

Hi we are starting to use sharepoint 2010 / word 2010 and have found an interesting bug/problem. Sometimes when a user tries to save a file (by clicking on the save button in the quick access toolbar for word 2010) the save dialog comes up with the users local "Documents" folder as the path (not the correct sharepoint path where the document should be saved).  (I should say that we are creating the file from sharepoint by using a toolbar on the document library, with the new button)  We are using a content type and a template attached to the document library when we create the file.  This is really annoying because the user might not notice that the document is saving locally and not to sharepoint.  I have found a strange workaround which involves clicking the [File] tab on the ribbon in word 2010, then clicking "Save and Send" and then clicking the save button again.  At this point word 2010 seems to "remember" that it is trying to save document to sharepoint and shows the sharepoint document library. This is a real nuisance which could lead to documents being lost/misfiled if people don't realize that this is happening.  Can anyone help me? Thanks Kevin krd
