Management studio: how to set Update Rule or Delete Rule

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 22, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I have exported the schema of a SQL Server 2008 express database to a SSCE 3.5 database with CEQuery free tool.

Relations and FK constraints have been created but Update and Delete rules have not been exported.

When I open the Table "Properties" tab in SSMS 2008, I am able to browse the existing relations in the "Manage Relations" page.

But I can't change the Update rule and Delete rule fields, it seems that it is disabled.

How to achieve this?

Or maybe a way to export relations, constraints AND update/delete rules...

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Application Exception Rule Violation thrown on Delete

I basically have my first simple asp.net MVC 2.0 web application up and running except for deletes. I tried to do the first delete today, but it throws an exception with the text Rules Violation.  I'm not sure what is causing the error however.It shouldn't be the database (I don't think) because when I trace the database, I never see the delete call and after having it fail, I was able to sucessfully run:DELETE FROM [Work] WHERE work_id = 84 GOCurrently this is my method (yes its primitive, but I was just trying to get it working), its the db.SubmitChanges() line where the application exception gets thrown. [HttpPost] public ActionResult Delete(int id, FormCollection collection) { try { // TODO: Add delete logic here var result = db.Works.SingleOrDefault(w => w.work_id == id); if (result == null) return View("NotFound"); db.Works.DeleteOnSubmit(result); db.SubmitChanges(); return RedirectToAction("Index"); } catch { var result = db.Works.SingleOrDefault(w => w.work_id == id); return View(result); } } }This may be a Linq-to-Sql issue as this is really the first time I've us

SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() returns -1 when doing Insert / Update / Delete

Sometimes you end up with a return value of -1 when using the SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery method.

Why is that?

Well, the ExecuteNonQuery method is there for statements for changing data, ie. DELETE / UPDATE /INSERT, and the returned value are the number of rows affected by that statement.

When checking the documentation we can see that there are some conditions that return -1.

For UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE statements, the return value is the number of rows affected by the command.

When a trigger exists on a table being inserted or updated, the return value includes the number of rows affected by both the insert or update operation and the number of

rows affected by the trigger or triggers. For all other types of statements, the return value is -1. If a rollback occurs, the return value is also -1.

Visual Studio closes itself by opening aspx-Page designer after Windows Update

Hey Guys,

I've a problem with my Visual Studio.

On the 13th of August 2010 i installed a Windows update on my vista sp2 pc. For this date my Visual Studio 2008 sp 1 always has closed itself by opening an aspx-page in designer view. There is no error message just closing the window. I restored a backup of my windows from the time before updating it and it helped, i could open aspx pages in the design view till the update has been installed again automatically after rebooting the pc. I can't disable windows updates, cause it's my pc at work and safety is very important. I hope you could help me out of this disaster.

wss2.0 update/delete/hide lookup column that does not display any values

Hi All,

I have a document library that contains a Category column that is a lookup field. This is a default column that is a required field when uploading documents to the document library. The Category column is empty and I am unable to amend, hide, make it not required or delete it.

I have gone to Modify settings and columns -> clicked on the Category field to edit, but there is no option to amend the content or delete it. I am only able to amend the Column name and Description.

Since then, I have amended the column name to eg. Category1 and created a new Category field as a lookup and linked it to the correct list.

The problem I am facing now, is that I cannot hide, delete or make the Category1 (old Category) field NOT required. Either I would like to update the original field to display the correct values or alternately hide, delete or make the column not required.

Please help.

I just installed SQL Server 2008 Management studio Express on my Vista machine.

i tried connecting to local machine using :

nothing is working, getting this error:

Tables not showing in Management Studio Express

Hi all

(needing help!)

Have used Visual Web Developer 2008 to make ASP application, with SQL server 2008 R2 Express for database. Works very nicely.

However, when I come to use Management Studio Express 2008 R2, I cannot see all my tables.

The ones I CAN see were created by the MS script that creates membership tables (and are called dbo.aspnet_membership etc), presumably because the owner of the tables was specified as 'dbo'.

The ones I can't see from Management Studio are the ones I created. I never specified an owner.

I think this is a permissions issue, but I can't fathom it. There's only ever been me on my development machine (laptop) doing it all, hence always the same log ins.

Running Management Studio as Adminstrator doesn't help.

I can't even ask Management Studio who own's the tables that I can't see because Management Studio can't see them so rejects the script.

Any ideas/links very (very) welcome !

**** Actually, it is even wierder. The tables in Management Studio have full structure, but are empty. But if I look at them in Visual Basic 2008 they are full !!!  And...if I create a table in Management Studio it does not appear at all in Visual Basic, and likewise, a table created in Visual Basic does not appear at all in Management

Can't perform Create, Update or Delete operations on 'Table(outbox)' because it has no primary ke

I'm a beginner in asp.net and I have some problem inserting data into sql server 2005 with linq.

my code is :

            Label1.Text = "Your Message Sent Successfuly"
            Dim db As New IGSSDataContext
            Dim out As New outbox With {.ClientID = intRandomNumber, .From = User.Identity.Name, .TO = TextBox1.TabIndex, _
            .Time = Now, .Message = Message}
            out.ID = (ID)
            TextBox1.Text = ""

how to add a row without a sql management studio

Hi, If I want to provide a way to INSERT rows to a table without having to use SMS, what is the way to go? Is there such a thing as a sql script? so that you can just change the data in the file and double click to write it to db? Thanks.

SQL Server Management Studio Slow Grid Draw and Refresh

I've istalled SQL2005/SSMS on my development machine and connecting to a local SQL Server 2005. Executing queries is fast but the results grid populating is slow and so is the refresh of the same data. This is not a slow query, its the gridview draw/redraw. I've other PC's with slower processors and less ram with the same software run circles around the SMSS Performance on this Laptop   I've read posts about nvidia graphics drivers and mouse drivers causing issues similar to this. I do have an nvidia quadro x1600M (this is a laptop Compaq 8710w) and switching off the accelerator using Displays/Advanced/Troubleshooting by moving the slider to the middle/center position causes the gird refresh to dramatically increase. It's funny how turning oof the accelerator increases performance.   I have the latest HP nvidia drivers and SSMS is useable without hardware acceleration  but I also develop software that uses directx and its getting really troublesome to work this way.   I am running:   Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_qfe.070227-2300)Language: English (Regional Setting: English)System Manufacturer: Hewlett-PackardSystem Model: HP Compaq 8710wBIOS: EPP runtime BIOS - Version 1.1 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     T7300  @ 2.00GHz (2 CPUs)Memory: 3072MB RAMPage File: 515MB used, 4439MB availableWindows Dir: C:\WIN
