why doesn't validation control stop application?

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 22, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I use a validation control to check if value entered is numeric.  When I type letter in the textbox, the error messages shows for a second, then the application continues, and eventually throw exception.

I'm going to add server side validation in code behind.  But I wonder why the validation control doesn't stop the application.  I don't see any difference between this web form and other web forms where validation controls work fine.

Could somebody tell me what may be the cause?  I'll appreciate your help!

Server side validation of Fileupload control not working

I've tried this method in my code behind to try and validate that the Fileupload control has a file or not. I get the error message the the event "Server Validate" cannot be found. Can anyone tell why? Thanks.

Public Sub CustomValidator1_ServerValidate(ByVal source As Object, ByVal args As System.Web.UI.WebControls.ServerValidateEventArgs) Handles CustomValidator1.ServerValidate

' Get file name

        Dim uploadAvatar As FileUpload = DirectCast(AdvertisementForm.FindControl("uploadAvatar"), FileUpload)

        Dim UploadFileName As String = uploadAvatar.PostedFile.FileName

        If UploadFileName = "" Then
            ' There is no file selected
            args.IsValid = False
            Dim Extension As String = UploadFileName.Substring(UploadFileName.L

Validation Control Query

I've read that if you put a validation control on a page it performs the validation on the client AND server side.

My question is, if you've got a button's click event and you put code in there that puts submitted data into a database, how will the validation controls stop the data being inserted?

Is validation simply performed before anything else, then the page just stops?

Ajax Asyncfileupload doesn't work as soon as I put it in a control

Hi guys,

I can't get my <ajax:asyncfileupload> working and I don't see why...

When outside any panel or table it is working well, but as soon as I put it in a <asp:panel> or table I get a strange error which seems to be on client-side but I don't understand what's happen here. Here is the code and code-behind and Javascript.

Here's the error:

Here's my front-code:

<%@ Page Language="VB" MasterPageFile="~/masterpages/mpSqueletton.master" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="frmAdmGestSocietes.aspx.vb" Inherits="adm_frmAdmGestSocietes" title="Untitled Page" %>
<%@ Register Assembly="AjaxControlToolkit" Namespace="AjaxControlToolkit" TagPrefix="ajax" %>

<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="cphHead" Runat="Server">
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">
        function uploadError(sender,args)
          document.getElementById("<%= lblStatus.ClientID %>").innerText = args.get_fileName(), "<span style='color:red;'>" + args.get_errorMes

Binding byte[] to image control in navigation application leaks

Hi there, I have a (minimal) navigation application with two pages. Page1 contains an image. Switching between pages is done via a buttonhandler in code behind, for instance, (this.NavigationService.Navigate(new Page2())) The image is loaded in code behind via: private void LoadImage() { string fileName = "./images/image.bmp"; if (!new FileInfo(fileName).Exists) throw new Exception("File name doesn't exist"); using (FileStream fs = new FileStream(fileName, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read)) { this.ImageData2 = new byte[fs.Length]; fs.Read(this.ImageData2, 0, System.Convert.ToInt32(fs.Length)); fs.Close(); } } ImageData2 is a byte[] property that sends a propertychange event on changing. ImageData2 is bound to an image in xaml: <Image Grid.Row="1" Source="{Binding Path=ImageData2, Mode=OneTime}"/> When we unload Page1 the following clean up code is executed private void Page_Unloaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { this.ImageData2 = null; GC.Collect(); GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers(); GC.Collect(); } Now, when I start changing pages, I expect the Page we leave to unload, so the GC removes the byte array. However, it doesn't. Am I missing something? Binding the image to a BitmapImage (ImageData1, as you might have guessed:-) ) doesn't leak.

Validation control half disapears in CollapsibelPanel

Hi all,I have a textbox sitting at the bottom of a collapsible panel which has a  RequiredFieldValidator sitting underneath that. If a user tries to submit the form without filling in this textbox then the RequiredFieldValidator generates a little "Required" box beneath the textbox.The trouble is that the panel doesn't resize propely and only the top of the validation warning box is visible so the message isn't legible.I tried adding some margin-bottom to the div that contains the textbox and validator to ensure the space was already there but the moment the validation box appears the collapsible panel automatically resizes so the bottom of the panel meets the bottom of the textbox, ignoring the prior margin.Apart from moving the validation box, does anyone know how I can get the collapsible panel to resize correctly?ThanksVanlightly

Data Validation in a 3 tier application

Say you have a form  designed in  Silverlight(Front end)-Asp.NEt(business layer)-SQl(bakcend)Should data validation occur on all 3 layers or just the presentation layer or  a combination of the front end with the other 2  e.g. validating an email address? I'm trying to undestand as to why if data has been validated on the presentation  why further data validation would be necessary  especially if there would be large amounts of data being validated and this could potentially slow down database transactions?

Graphs stop displaying in Report Viewer Control after upgrade to SSRS 2008 R2

We are seeing an issue where certain graphs and guages are not being displayed within a report rendered in the report viewer control after we upgraded from SSRS 2008 to SSRS 2008R2.  You can see the graphs and guages render and then disappear from the screen when two other graphs are rendered.  When I export the report to Excel or PDF then all of the graphs and guages are rendered properly. There are a total of 3 graphs and 2 guages on the report - when it completes the rendering process, you can only see two of the graphs displayed in the report viewer control - as I said before, you can see all 3 graphs and 2 guages when exporting to Excel or PDF.  Using Internet Explorer v8.  This problem manifest itself right after the upgrade. Has anyone seen a similar issue?

spid3 SQL Server is terminating due to 'stop' request from Service Control Manager

Installing MSDE (SP3) on a clean updated Win-XP system with all the latest fixes installed unsuccesfully. A clean systems means a fresh installed Win-XP, updated all using webupdate. And Excel 2003 installed. Thats all (not even AntiVirus (yet))No UI in the end. Only when examining the Log files at the installation location does show that there was an error: <DateTime> spid3 SQL Server is terminating due to 'stop' request from Service Control Manager is found at the end of the logfile.This error is often encountered by others as found on any respected seach engine on the web. Most have no answer and some say it is because of MDAC. But I got the latest Mdac installed (v2.8 (.1)) RTM. checked it using 'Component Checker' if nothing missing. All seems ok and in place except for MSDE. Anybody?

Using DataGrid for my application - is it the right control?

I've been investigating DataGrid for my embedded application.  Basically, what I want to do is to read in information from my embedded system over USB.  Store the information in a structure.  And, retrieve the information from the structure to display to the user.   The information I want to display is an ID Number (1-255), an ID Description, and a Relay Number.  The Relay Number is a drop down combo box with 4 options of 1-4, which is editable by the user.  The ID Number is not editable and the Grid should contain information all 1-255 IDs.  The Description should be a maximum, editable, field of 30 characters (I might change later).  Is the DataGrid the best way to do this? I tried to implement a DataGrid (see below), but am having some problems getting the data into the columns correctly.  Do I need both the Header entries in WPF and in the code?  When I do, I get two columns of 'ID #' and 'IDNum' with 1-255 in each column.  I don't want the header 'IDNum', only 'ID #' as stated in the WPF code.  I'm missing something.  Maybe someone can help.  Thanks. User Control Validation is not working properly

In my Website I have header control (header.ascx) and footer control (footer.ascx)In header.ascx one textbox and one button is there. Textbox meant for accepting search string.In footer.ascx one textbox and one button is there. Textbox meant for accepting Email-Id.Now in validation of header.ascx I had done blank checking by JavaScript. And in validation of footer.ascx  I had done blank-checking and e-mail checking by javascript.In both the control the textbox and the button both resides under Panel control whose DefaultButton property set to the respective button ids. So that if User write write something and press ENTER key from keyboard then it should do whatever respective Button_Clicks will do.Now My problem is suppose I place the mouse cursor in footer.ascx's textbox and press the ENTER key it validates properly but after that if I place the cursor inheader.ascx's textbox and press the ENTER then it is not working. Again If I do the opposite then also first one will fire but in case of second it is not firing .......
