My situation is this: my company has a mixture of SQL 2005 and some SQL 2008 servers, but no immediate plans for SQL 2008 R2 servers. We are starting to use VS2010 instead of VS2008 for C# development. I need to develop RDLC in Visual Studio
and RDL to deploy on RS on both 2005 and 2008.
I have SQL 2005 SP3 and SQL 2008 SP2 database engine + report services installed locally to support developing on both environments. I *prefer* to develop in VS2010, so I think want I want to do is ---> Install the SQL 2008 R2 client tools and use
those to develop reports against the SQL 2008 SP2 database.
Does that seem like the best idea? What's the latest greatest version of client tool development - SQL 2008 R2 or SQL 2008 SP2? Can I use SQL 2008 R2 client tools to get the "best experience" for working with SQL 2008 SP2 servers?
