VS2010 and WPF slow debug issues

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 22, 2010    Points: 0   Category :WPF

hi all,

im (like a lot of other people) doing my first steps in vs2010.

one of the things i just found which really annoys me is that each time i try to debug a WPF application the ide slows down so each movement from one statement to the other results in 10 sec. (!) waiting.

what can i do ? is there a nice solution (besides not using WPF:)

Unable to debug Workflow in VS2010

I have a minimal sequential workflow created in Visual Studio 2010 which I cannot run in debug mode. I have created the workflow using the template in VS2010. When running the project in debug mode the breakpoint mark changes from full red circle to empty circle with exclamation mark. The tooltip message is: "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document" I am able to debug webparts deployed onto the same Sharepoint site using VS2010. Environment: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Sharepoint 2010, Visual Studio 2010 Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Claudiu

Azure ASP.Net VS2010 Timeouts during debug

Hi All,I've converted an ASP.Net website over to an Azure version and I've got it up and running. However the vast majority of the time I experience timeouts when I'm trying to debug the application. This seems to happen on any page at any time. I start debugging from VS2010 and sometimes the home page will come up sometimes it hangs. When it does come up if I select an item from a drop down list sometimes it works somtimes it times out. I have breakpoints set and they don't even fire I just eventually get the time out. If I hit refresh that sometimes seems to fix it but it eventually starts happening again. This is making the completion of the conversion VERY difficult and I'm starting to creep up to a deadline.Does anyone have any idea what might be happening? If there is a better location I can post this question to would someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance for any help and in addition my email is mgorgone@pictureu.com as our Windows Live account email is diff. Cheers,Mike

javascript issues converting ASP.NET application from VS2008 to VS2010

I have encountered some javascript issues migrating an ASP.NET web application from Visual Studio 2008 to VS 2010.

1. When retrieving a value from a control, the following javascript syntax worked in VS2008:

In VS2010, I have to change everything to the following format:

2. I use Master pages extensively.  In VS2008, when the ASP.NET web form is displayed in the browser, the ID for a control in a child form in the content placeholder uses the following convention:

In VS2010, the ID for a control in the placeholder uses the following convention:

The "ctl00" is dropped.  Wherever I have used

has to be replaced with

Is there an alternative to modifying reams of javascript code?

Are there any other javascript surprises I should anticipate during the conversion?

Any issues or concerns in converting VS2008 project to VS2010

I have been working on this project for a few months in VS2008.. now that we are getting closer to the end, one of the other programmers has been working and doing his in VS2010, so when i try to open his projects in VS2008 it just shows up as XML.. so i have to open in VS2010.. thats fine..

But if i try to open my project in 2010, it prompts to use the conversion wizard..

Should i be concerned or are there any issues with doing the conversion? Being the end of the project, i dont want to cause issues at this point.. So would like to know if converting the project file at this stage in our project a good idea? Will there be any issues using his code with mine since they were developed in 2 different versions..

Help - uanble to Debug Feature Receiver with VS2010 on SP2010 Farm

I am unable to debug the feature receiver using VS2010. I Changed the Active Deployment Configuration from Default to No Activation. Set the breakpoint and press F5, I get the below error

"Unable to start debugging on the web server. The Microsoft Visual Studio Remote Debugging Monitor (MSVSMON.EXE) does not appear to be running on the remote computer. "

We are running VS2010 on x64 bit Windows2008 server and the farm has 1 App server, 1 WFE server and 1 sql server.

I would really appreciate any help regarding this.

Issues with SQL CLR debugging using VS2010 and SQL 2008 R2

I upgraded a VS 2008 SQL CLR project, which worked perfectly, to VS 2010 SP1.  However, I did not have to debug the CLR routines until today.  Now, whenever I attempt to debug a change to my code, the deployment succeeds (the new function is listed in the database), but the debugging never occurs because although it says that is successfully attached (“Auto-attach to process '[1696] [SQL] stx3-desktopx64' on machine 'stx3-desktopx64' succeeded”).  It also says that it was “Canceled by user”, which it certainly was not.  I have also tried simply debugging on a different machine, which had NO changes made at all to the project, and it generates exactly the same messages.  I have also changed the target from Any CPU to x86 to x64 to no avail.  Both test machines use a local SQL instance that is x64, as is the version of Win 7.  I read one article that suggested manually deploying the routine would help, but it changes nothing.  Every debug attempt results in the same messages after 20-30 seconds of waiting.  On VS 2008, t

Response.Redirect slow

I'm in the middle of migrating servers and on the new server Response.Redirect is extremely slow. It takes around 20 seconds for the browser to get the redirect. This is something that was quick on the existing server. It's an ASP.NET 2.0 application, both servers are running IIS6.

Additionally, if I "manually" do the redirect, it's fast. For example:

Existing way:

takes around 20 seconds on the new server

New way:

Response.Status = "302 Moved Temporarily";
Response.AddHeader("Location", url);

is fast on the new server.

Any ideas why Response.Redirect would be so slow on the new server?

VS2010 Professional .NET 4.0 Remote Debugging ASP Website Project

Trying to remote debug ASP website from VS2010 Pro to Windows Server 2003 machine.  Specifically, trying to debug a Web Service, but breakpoint says, "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document."  This happens for all compiled code though.  I have read this is due to missing PDB files and the work around is to manually copy them, as noted here.  Problem is, I cannot find any PDB files for my project, except referenced libraries, which I can remote debug.

  • web.config has <compilation debug="true">
  • Debugger is attached to wewp.exe process on remote server
  • Installed VS2010 remote debugger from DVD (as I can remote debug referenced libraries)

This is beyond frustrating.  I migrated my code from VS2008 .Net3.5 to VS2010 .Net4.0 to take advantage of the inherent multithreading framework.  Debugging works when using local host and was stable until deployment to test server.

Thanks in advance,

How can I be sure that my entire project is up-to-date and free of errors in VS2010?

Seems like a stupid question, but I will go to Build > Build Solution many many times and the build will succeed many many times, then I will put in a minor syntax error and the build will fail, BUT the build will not fail because of the minor syntax error; it will fail because of an unresolved type that I put in about twenty compiles ago. And then I will fix the minor syntax eror, and the compiler will still complain about the unresolved type. Here is my code:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="FTB" Namespace="FreeTextBoxControls" Assembly="FreeTextBox" %>
  <form runat="server">
  Hello World!!

Pretty simple, really. I go to Buld > Build WebApplication1 and it runs OK. Now, if I put in a minor syntax error, such as substitute "forrrrrrrm" for "form" and then try to Build Solution, it complains not about the misspelled word, but about the FreeTextBox. And then if I correct the misspelled wird, it still complains about the FreeTextBox. Which leads me to believe that Building the Solution does not check absolutely 100% everything that needs to be checked. Is there a more thorough way of compiling a program that I need to use?

Where is SilverLight Toolkit in VS2010?

I read somewhere that MS has integrate SilverLight Toolkit into VS2010. Where is it? I can't find it under Toolbox.

VS 2010 Pro is slow

I was wondering if anybody else is finding VS 2010 extremely slow loading a solution - and it pretty much renders the rest of the machine useless until loaded. Everything is slowed to a halt.

I upgraded from VS 2005 - now I think I made a terrible mistake. I cannot afford to try and load 2 solutions simultaneously.

The machine is a Core2 Duo E8400, 3GB of RAM, WinXP SP3. Max I can go to is 4GB. Would upgrading to a 64-bit OS really be worth it (actually only to get 8GB of RAM)?

I'm hoping someone else has found a solution to this particular problem.

Debug implementation of URLrewriter.net

After some googling and help from the forum, I have integrated the the URLrewrting.net in my project. There are no error when I build the project, but the URL rewriting does not work. I am able to figure ot where the problem is. Is there a way to debug this. The code is as below:

web admin tool to configure settings for your application. Use
the Website->Asp.Net Configuration option in Visual Studio.
A full list of settings and comments can be found in

Thanks for your help.

vs2010 web deployment project restarts w3svc even when restartwwwservice = false

We've updated some of our projects from VS2008 to VS2010.  When these projects are deployed the w3svc is restarted on the target machine, even when restartwwwservice = false in the vdproj file.

This was a problem in 2008 until SP1 (http://forums.asp.net/p/1300097/2534736.aspx).  Does this same problem exist in VS2010?

This is a major problem for us -  we need to be able to deploy projects without restarting IIS.

I've tried creating a new web deployment package and setting the restartWWWService field to false, but this still does a restart when it's installed.

Has anyone come across this problem in VS2010?

VS2010 WDP Optimization

We have moved our projects from VS2008 to VS2010(Ulitmate) but staying with .Net 3.5. In VS2008 we had a web deployment project that would compile the web project to a single dll and emit full debug information, adding the new web deployment project in VS 2010 to do the same the dll is produced along with the pdb but when a dev attempts to debug the variable comes back with "Cannot evaluate expression because the code of the current method is optmized".

In VS2008 we had a targets fix file which had the setting for the optimization but these don't appear to work under 10 (plus the targets file has grown).
