Need advice : Upgrade to VS2010, EF4 or IBatis.Net

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 22, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I need little advice from you who has experiences in EF4 and IBatis. I would like to upgrade my applications that used IBatis technology and VS2005 to VS2010. The reasons of upgrading are i would like to use the latest technology and also enhance my applications with features that not provided in .Net 2.0

I already try EF4 in VS2010. It looks like nice feature to create application but i need more information about it advantage and disadvantage in performance, security, stability etc. As information, i was using generator to wrap IBatis.Net and VS2005, so it seem the .edmx file similar with classes that my generator was created

If you have link of benchmark result, opinion or anything that can help me to choose 1 of them, i really appreciate and I grateful for that.

Help - Serious ReportViewer Problem upon upgrade to VS2010

I upgraded from VS2008 to VS2010 and none of my reports work! First, I had to replace all the existing ReportViewer controls with new ones.  Then, when the page finally runs, it is stuck in a loop: I see the "Loading..." word and icon while the ReportViewer is loading, then a quick flash, and the page loads again! What's going on?  What am I missing that should obviously be changed to make these ReportViewers work?  These reports were designed in VS2005/2008, and have been in production for several years. Please help - I have a screaming client... (I know, we all do...)

VS2010 upgrade broke my Ajax controls

I installed VS2010 and proceded to convert my projects but the wizard failed. Insted I decided to recreate the whole solution with 5 projects from scratch, except that my Ajax 4.0 controls do not work. The projects are "Class" type and the final product is complied DLL that I'll be using some place else.

I am referencing the latest AjaxControlToolKit and in one of my projects where I'm building tab panel controls on the fly, where I'm adding "Controls" to the TP such as tpOverdue.Controls.Add(linkButton), the "Controls" throws an error:

'AjaxControlToolkit.TabPanel' does not contain a definition for 'Controls' and no extension method 'Controls' accepting a first argument of type 'AjaxControlToolkit.TabPanel' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

Another error I get in a separate project (same solution) where I build the scriptmanager on the fly like this: ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this, typeof(PeopleSearch), "UpdatePanelFixup", "_spOriginalFormAction = document.forms[0].action; _spSuppressFormOnSubmitWrapper=true;", true); - The er

upgrade vs2005 to vs2010

Hi Guys,

I read this related link :http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/e848ad5b-9163-4239-866d-6c6de84bdebe

How about the iis?

I have projects using vs2005 deploy on win2003 server using iis6 and using dotnetframework 2.0

So what if i have to deploy new project using vs2010, so i need to install the dotnetframework 4.0 will it not be conflict with the previous dotnetramework?

VS2010 Professional .NET 4.0 Remote Debugging ASP Website Project

Trying to remote debug ASP website from VS2010 Pro to Windows Server 2003 machine.  Specifically, trying to debug a Web Service, but breakpoint says, "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document."  This happens for all compiled code though.  I have read this is due to missing PDB files and the work around is to manually copy them, as noted here.  Problem is, I cannot find any PDB files for my project, except referenced libraries, which I can remote debug.

  • web.config has <compilation debug="true">
  • Debugger is attached to wewp.exe process on remote server
  • Installed VS2010 remote debugger from DVD (as I can remote debug referenced libraries)

This is beyond frustrating.  I migrated my code from VS2008 .Net3.5 to VS2010 .Net4.0 to take advantage of the inherent multithreading framework.  Debugging works when using local host and was stable until deployment to test server.

Thanks in advance,

How can I be sure that my entire project is up-to-date and free of errors in VS2010?

Seems like a stupid question, but I will go to Build > Build Solution many many times and the build will succeed many many times, then I will put in a minor syntax error and the build will fail, BUT the build will not fail because of the minor syntax error; it will fail because of an unresolved type that I put in about twenty compiles ago. And then I will fix the minor syntax eror, and the compiler will still complain about the unresolved type. Here is my code:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="FTB" Namespace="FreeTextBoxControls" Assembly="FreeTextBox" %>
  <form runat="server">
  Hello World!!

Pretty simple, really. I go to Buld > Build WebApplication1 and it runs OK. Now, if I put in a minor syntax error, such as substitute "forrrrrrrm" for "form" and then try to Build Solution, it complains not about the misspelled word, but about the FreeTextBox. And then if I correct the misspelled wird, it still complains about the FreeTextBox. Which leads me to believe that Building the Solution does not check absolutely 100% everything that needs to be checked. Is there a more thorough way of compiling a program that I need to use?

Where is SilverLight Toolkit in VS2010?

I read somewhere that MS has integrate SilverLight Toolkit into VS2010. Where is it? I can't find it under Toolbox.

New off line application working with sdf file. Need advice

Hey Folks

I am working on a project currently where I need to get data out of a 3rd party vendor's software that uses a .sdf file I looked this up and its a SQL CE file. I was hoping to just link to with with access but thats apparently not going to happen. I need to link to the database extract data from it to a csv file for later use. I also and most important I need to get the data from it and create a report that can be printed while on a customers site that my or may not have web access so I need for this program to be on and off line. I had my webapplication that I have been working on open and was able to bring up the sdf file under the server exploere however I can't seem to get anything out of it when I try to do grid views or detail views errors out.

Can I use one of Visual Studio projects to create this sort of applicaiton if so what would be the best approach. I would love to get an access odbc driver since office is allready installed on the employee's laptop's

Best Way to Upgrade Using Web Setup Project

Hi there,

I am using VS2005.

I don't have much experience with web setup projects, but I now need to create a decent windows installer in order to allow customers to install one of our web applications. I have created a simple web setup project and it works fine, but not when it comes to upgrades of the application.

If for instance I install version 1.0 on a machine, and then later I try to install version 2.0, I don't seem to have the control that I would like... I can specify in the web setup project that the installer must enforce an uninstall of previous version, but then all application files and logs are uninstalled as well. If I let the application just install itself over the older version, it seems to leave some old DLL's there - it then causes issues in the application because DLL version conflicts.

My basic requirement is that I would like th installer to upgrade the old version with all the files required, but leave any application and log files in tact - this way the customer won't have to reconfigure the application after install.

What is the best way to handle this?

vs2010 web deployment project restarts w3svc even when restartwwwservice = false

We've updated some of our projects from VS2008 to VS2010.  When these projects are deployed the w3svc is restarted on the target machine, even when restartwwwservice = false in the vdproj file.

This was a problem in 2008 until SP1 (http://forums.asp.net/p/1300097/2534736.aspx).  Does this same problem exist in VS2010?

This is a major problem for us -  we need to be able to deploy projects without restarting IIS.

I've tried creating a new web deployment package and setting the restartWWWService field to false, but this still does a restart when it's installed.

Has anyone come across this problem in VS2010?

VS2010 WDP Optimization

We have moved our projects from VS2008 to VS2010(Ulitmate) but staying with .Net 3.5. In VS2008 we had a web deployment project that would compile the web project to a single dll and emit full debug information, adding the new web deployment project in VS 2010 to do the same the dll is produced along with the pdb but when a dev attempts to debug the variable comes back with "Cannot evaluate expression because the code of the current method is optmized".

In VS2008 we had a targets fix file which had the setting for the optimization but these don't appear to work under 10 (plus the targets file has grown).

Who Goes There?: Upgrade Your Site's Authentication with the New ASP.NET 2.0 Membership API

Here Dino Esposito and Andrea Saltarello cover the plumbing of the Membership API and its inherently extensible nature, based on pluggable providers. To demonstrate the features, they take an existing ASP.NET 1.x authentication mechanism and port it to ASP.NET 2.0, exposing the legacy authentication mechanism through the new Membership API.

An example of packaging web application containing database upgrade SQL file

A few months ago, we have a blog talking about extending the web publishing pipeline to package database project deployed SQL file.  In this blog, I'll show step by step example of packaging web application with SQL Server database upgrade SQL file using Visual Studio 2010.  This way, we can generate a web package with incremental SQL script to certain database version.  The scenario may help distributions of a web upgrade package which needs to be installed on many different locations, each with their own SQL server database.   1. Create a Web Application Project 2. Add a new "SQL Server 2008 Database Project" to the solution 3. Prepare a development database, such as my test1 database as the following: 4. Right click our...(read more)

Controllers AccountController IFormsAuthentication MVC 2 error vs2010

I finally got around to trying vs2010 and MVC 2 ... I'm glad I did not put them on a production computer.

My first compile (I have not had a chance to investigate because I just did this and I am too tired).

All I did was create a MVC 2 solution with MSTEST Unit Testing selected too.

I compiled it and get four unexpected errors (because I have heard ASP.NET MVC 2 "alpha" and vs2010 Beta 2 are supposed to be somewhat robust):

In both HomeController and AccountController:

"The type or namespace name "Controllers" does not exist ins the namespace "mvczzzzz001" occurs twice, once for HomeController.cs and once for AccountController.cs.

AccountControllerTest.cs has two errors:  can not find "AccountController" namespace and can not find "IFormsAuthentication" namespace.

With ASP.NET MVC v1.0 there are errors when one uses xUnit.net (version at time of ASP.NET MVC v1.0 RTM) as the test framework but not errors with MSTEST (I prefer xUnit.net to MSTEST).

I am just so surprised to find such errors in vs2010 + MVC 2 ....

is this happening to anyone else?????????????????

Thank you ~~ regards, Gerry (Lowry)

Windows 7, IIS 7.5 and VS2010: can't edit global.asax

Hey and thanks!

As the subject line notes the software in use, anyone have an idea why I can't edit global.asax in VS2010 (being ran with the 'run as administrator' advanced property check box checked)?  The file properties in explorer show local machine admins have full control (I am in that category) and also that IIS has windows auth enabled for the default web site.  What is this other level of security on here that I'm missing?  I can edit web.config, vb files and general aspx files with no problem--just the global.asax file causing a headache...

Convert 2005 RDLC to 2008 using VS2010

Hi and thanks.

I'm getting an error on serveral reports that I built  in VWD2005 (express) using the reportviewer control.  Trying to edit the rdlc file in VS2010, VS2010 asks if i want to convert the file to RDLC 2008 format and I click ok.  When I build the site, I get this error (and of course also when the report is ran):

Error 1 The report definition is not valid.  Details: The report definition has an invalid target namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2008/01/reportdefinition' which cannot be upgraded. C:\inetpub\wwwroot\mastercardlcm\Reports\WorkLists\OpenSRStatus.rdlc 1

Here is my web.config concerning the RDLC assemblies, etc.

I have installed Visual Studio 2010 Express in my local system.

1. File->New Website
2.Open datbase explorer, right click on dataconnection
3.Select Create new connection
4.use Microsoft SQL Server Database file
5. Type new databse filename
6. Now i want to use SQL authentication which is not working
7.If we use windows authentication its wokring without any problem
8.But i need sql authentication to be used.
9.I have not installed SQL studio. I am only using the one which is packaged in VisualStudio 2010 SQLClient.

Let me know how can we create a new database file with userID and password. So that i can host it in other systems as well without any windows authentication.
