Quorum Drive on cluster

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hi All,

I have a small doubt in clustering.

Clustering uses quorum drive to replicate the configuration level changes to the other node.

My question is what happens to a 2 node active/passive cluster if the quorum drive is inaccessible or corrupted.

Can any one throw some light in this  regard.

Adding Instance(SQL Server 2008 R2) and Moving Quorum Drive

Hi all,

I am Planning to Add new SQl Server 2008R2 Instance to SQL Server 2000 SP4 in Windows 2003 SP2 OS and As of now all the storage in SAN drive

Here problem is my company is going to move SAN drive to iSCSI and they given me iSCSI drives to Install SQL Server 2008R2 and they ask me Create Quorum drive on iSCSI.

1. Is it possible to create one more  Quorum  Drive or I need to move excisting Quorum to new Drive

I have below Groups in SAN Drive and I want Move those groups to iSCSI Drives what is best way ..to do this  with minimum Down time.

Cluster Group
Cluster Ip Adress
Cluster Name
MSDTC NetworkName

Disk G:
Disk L
SQL Server Name
SQL Server Agent
SQL Server Fulltext

Thanks in Advance

Moving the Quorum drive to new SAN (SQL Server 2005)

I have an active/passive cluster installed on Windows 2003 Ent ed with SQL Server 2005 installed. Currently we are planning to move to the new SAN. Can you give me detailed steps (with screenshots if possible) or links on how to move quorum and msdtc resources to the new SAN.

multi-site failover cluster, is node & file share majority quorum really correct in this instance -

The HA design we propose in a nutshell:

Primary site A

Node 1: 1 x physical host for a SQL Failover cluster instance for application A

Node 2: 1 x physical host for a SQL Failover cluster instance for application B

Node 3: 1 x physical host for two SQL Failover cluster instances, one for a test env for application A, and another for a test env for application B

Secondary site B

Node 4: 1 x physical host for a SQL Failover cluster instance that acts as a 3+1 failover node that will pic up the failure of either or all of the 3 nodes in Primary site A.

Now I am a complete novice, but my understanding of quorums are that their purpose is to establish when the cluster must stop running due to things like network failures etc. There really is not much out there in terms of a laymans description for quorums :(

The basic requirement for a multi-site failover cluster with an even number of nodes is to use the node & file share majority configuration, and that is what I have here. 4 x nodes (3 at site A and 1 at site B), and a seperate file share for the witness file (which makes the odd number for a majority).

So my understanding is that:

If node 1 fails, it will failover to node 4

If node 1 and 2 fail, they will both failover to node 4

If node 1, 2 and 3 fail, they will all fail

Word save file on SharePoint via mapped drive

Hi, I have a Document Library mapped to a drive letter. I am able to browse the drive through Windows Explorer. However when I try to save a document to the drive Word returns, 'Unable to connect to the Web server.' .  I have been unable to find any information regarding this error message. If I try to create a document in the Document Library through Windows Explorer and the mapped drive, I get a different error message: 'Unable to create the file 'New Microsoft Office Word Document.docx' There is no user session key for the specified logon session.' After I click OKand refresh the directory, a 0 KB New Microsoft Word Document.docx file has been created. When that file is opened, it is in Read-Only mode.

Thank you again for your input.

Why does .NET Framework require 841 MB hard drive space on C:

Just downloaded .NET Framework 4 from Microsoft website. Installation says it requires 841 MB space on my C: drive. Why so much? I am presuming that this is in addition to the space for the other versions of .net installed. This is not going to be installed without a very good reason for this much space required. Can anybody enlighten me on this? Any way to lighten the space requirement load?

Direct2D Dependencies on Non Develpment cluster

Hello all,I developed an application in Direct2D and referred Microsoft.WindowsAPICodePack.DirectX.Controls.dll and Microsoft.WindowsAPICodePack.DirectX.dll DLLs. Development has been done in VS2008. Everything works fine on the development servers. But when I move the DLLs to the Integration (non developement cluster) it fails with following error: [COMException (0x800736b1): The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail. SQLServer 2008 Tools and SQL 2005 Cluster

I recently built a SQL Server 2005 cluster on the o/s Windows Server 2008 R2.  I have been attempting to connect to the cluster from my Windows 7 dekstop with my SQL Server 2008 Tool set.  I have been unable to attach to this cluster since its creation. The firewall is temp off, remote connections in the surface area configuration is set to pipes and tcp/ip and the Browser surface is up and running. I ran Wireshark against the cluster and I could see that there was UDP conversations for ms-sql-m (SQL Port) but that was as far as it would get.  I am using a named instance so not using 1433, but I do see the cluster offering up high RPC ports but the client never responds after the initial UDP response. When I noticed that there was a two way conversation taking place, I went to a seperate machine and fired up SQL Server 2005 Tools and I was easily able to attach to the cluster.  So my question is - Are there any known incompatibilities between SQL Server 2005 cluster services and SQL Server 2008 Tool set?  I can use my 2008 tools to attach to a non-clustered SQL Server 2005 w/o issue.   Error when attempting to connect: A network-related or instance-specific error occured while establishing a connection to sql server.  The server was not found or was not accessible.  Verify that the instance name is correct and the SQL Server is con

Reinstalled SQL 2005 on cluster won't start.

OS: Windows Server 2003 32-bit. Cluster: 2-node Active/Passive We're working on upgrading from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008, and we're using this cluster to test the cluster upgrade/install procedures. So, updated the existing SQL 2005 instance to SQL 2008. This went fine. Added an additional SQL 2008 instance. This went fine. Uninstalled SQL 2008 (both instances) from both nodes. This went fine. Installed SQL 2005 (clustered setup). At the end of the install process, received a message about unable to do (something). However, the install reported successful. Any issues removing backup mount point cluster resources from SQL Server dependencies?

Win 2003, SQL 2005/SQL2008 64 bit enterprise failover cluster with 3 nodes and 6 instances. The mount points configured as cluster resources for the data/backup/logs. The entire cluster mount points are SAN replicated to a DR Site. But backup drives/LUNs are excluded from the replication. All the disk resources including backup LUNs are set to dependencies on the SQL Server server. The SQL Server is not coming on-line in the DR Site due to unavailability of the backup LUNs (failed resources). As per the documentation all the disk resources must be set to dependencies (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835185). Thought it did not specifically mentions only Data/Log mount points and/or the backup LUNs as well. "The SQL Server 2005 resource depends on the SQL network name resource and the physical disk resources that hold its data. When mount points are being used together with the physical disks, each mount point must appear as a cluster resource. Additionally, each mount point must also be added as a SQL Server dependency. If only the root physical disks dependency is added and the mount points are not added, database corruption will occur on failover. Database corruption may also occur when SQL Server is restarted without failing over. "     What if I remove the backup LUNs from dependencies list. This will allow me to recover the SQL Server

SQL cluster resources getting failed often

Hi We have an active-passive cluster setup in our environment for the SQL application. Both the servers are windows 2000 SP4. In the last 24 hours the SQL cluster resources have failed twice. I am not sure of the correct tme nor the correct log location of where the resources failed. Please find below the cluster logs of the day on which the failure happened. Please find the logs in the below link: http://rapidshare.com/files/414371495/New_Text_Document__2_.txt

Windows 2008 R2/SQL 2008 SP1 CU5 active/active cluster keeps failing

I have set up many of the same clusters in the last few months, but this cluster specifically has been having lots of problems lately.  OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 latest patches SQL: SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU5 (version: 10.0.2746) Disks: VMAX SAN In the very beginning when I set up the cluster, the cluster validation kept failing when I tried to add a node.  Turned out that we had to unjoin the servers from the domain and rejoin.  Right after that the cluster validation succeeded, the second node joined the cluster, and quorum was changed to "Node and Disk Majority".  SQL was installed and set up as active/active (one sql instance on each node).  No issues then until SQL server was actually in use.  Symptoms: SQL server has heavy ETL processing plus being a subscriber of a sql replication.  The following errors first started on 4/24 when I set up sql replication (these servers are replication subscribers): EventID: 1127, Source: FailoverCluster, Task Category: Network Manager Cluster network interface 'man1fscl01a - Hartbeat to man1fscl91b' for cluster node 'man1fscl01a' on network 'ClusterHeartBeat' failed.
