FTS - Noise words cause no results to be returned

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
Hi All.

I'm hoping someone can comment on the issue I'm having with full text search when it encounters a noise word.

For example, assume we have a Publication name of "Something at Somewhere".

The following query will return no results:

* from Publications WHERE CONTAINS((PublicationName),'"Something " AND "at" AND "Somewhere"')

Whereas the below query will return the correct results:

* from Publications WHERE CONTAINS((PublicationName),'"Something" AND "Somewhere"')
If the terms are "" qualified or not makes no difference either.

This behaviour seems to be the case when any noise word is encountered (not just "at" as in the above example).  BOL states that when a noise word is  encountered, it is excluded from the query but something els

Problems with ExecuteReader. No datagrid results returned since reader = nothing

I am having problems with the following. On debugging I find that when strKeywords = '', reader = "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataReader". However, as soon as strKeywords takes the value of anything else, reader = nothing. But the stored procedure handles the arguments fine, so I am very confused! Any ideas?

    Public Function RunSearch(ByVal strKeywords As String, ByVal strMediaType As String, ByVal strCamera As String) As Data.DataTable
        Dim AerialConnection = New SqlConnection(System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("aerialConnectionString").ConnectionString)
        Dim dtSearch As New Data.DataTable
        Dim reader As SqlDataReader
            'Opening the connection
            Dim SelectMediaArchiveCommand = New SqlCommand("EXEC spSearchResults @Keywords, @MediaType, @Camera", AerialConnection)
            SelectMediaArchiveCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue("Keywords", strKeywords)
            SelectMediaArchiveCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue("MediaType", strMediaType)
            SelectMediaArchiveCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue("Camera", strCamera)
            reader = SelectMediaArchiveCommand.ExecuteReader()

Where to Filter the companies returned by the EF?

I am just starting with dynamic data. I have an enttity framework called UsersModel.edmx.

It returns a list of all companies in the tblCompany table. This list is really big.

I need to filter the list returned to all user controls on the client so that it only returns the company that have a CompanyTypeId= 2 or CompanyTypeId= 3 and company name != "".

1 - Is it possible to filter the company list returned on the server so that I can filter only once for all the controls that use that on the client?

My ideas was to do something like this using linq and lambda but I am not sure how:

return tblCompanys.Where(c => c.CompanyTypeId == 2 || c.CompanyTypeId == 3 && ).Where(c=>c.CompanyName != "").OrderBy(c => c.CompanyName).Distinct().OrderBy(c=>c.CompanyName);

2 - I have created a partial class and a metadata class and added the DisplayColumn attribute to use the company name and sort by company name ascending.

Could I use the code to filter the returned companies in this? where?

namespace MarsMedicalModel
    [DisplayColumn("CompanyName", "CompanyName")]
    public partial class t

Need Syntax To Make Results of LINQ Union Return Non-Generic Type

I have the below SQL which works just fine:

SELECT     Message, CreateDate, AccountId, AlertTypeId
FROM       dbo.Alerts
SELECT     TOP (100) PERCENT Status, CreateDate, AccountId,
                          (SELECT     10 AS Expr1) AS AlertTypeId
FROM         dbo.StatusUpdates
WHERE AccountId = PassedInParameter

I have been going about trying to convert the above into a LINQ method and am having problems with return types.
As the above SQL illustrates, I am querying two distinct LINQ tables - Alerts and StatusUpdates -
and then attempting to perform a Union on them. In order to do the union in LINQ, I have to have agreeing types. So, I
am using "var" to make the results of "alerts" and "updates" generic before the union.

public IList GetStatusUpdatesAsAlertsByAccountId<T>(Int32 accountId)
            using (WorkbookDataContext dc = _conn.GetCont

sqlDataReader dos not get results

I am trying to run a stored proc from this function. When I run it thorugh the debugger I can see that myReader.HasRows = true and myReader.FieldCount =14.

But the control does not go in the loop while (myReader.Read()) where I am trying to read Version field returned by the stored proc.

Pls check me code and suggest correction. Thank You.

            SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
            cmd.CommandType = System.Data.CommandType.Text;

            SqlDataReader myReader = null;

            cmd.CommandText = stmt1;
            cmd.Connection = conn;
                myReader = cmd.ExecuteReader();
                while (myReader.Read())
                    Ver = (int)myReader["Version"];

            return Ver;

displaying xsl results in browser

Hi guys,

How can I test what my xsl spits out in the browser, rather than just viewing the xsl itself?

Count words in the ascx file

I have 163 .resx files. I want to count the words in these files, because my want to translate the sentences (my task is the localisation).

Now I'm opening each file in Ms Visual Studio and I count words manually. How can I count words in all files? And the second question: can I use a program what grab strings from .resx into an editor where I can translate them and save bacn into .resx files? Or must open the files one by one and edit the text fields manually?

Thanks for helping, unfortunately I'm not a programmer.

How to display a count of search results with keywords in a label?

Sorry for a basic post here; I am very new to VB!

I am currently building a search page, which includes a textbox and two drop-down lists, a search button, and a datagrid. If results are found and displayed, I would like a label to display:

(e.g.) "24 results found for 'blue sky clouds' "

...where the integer represents the results count, and the keywords and/or drop-down list selections are included in the string.

If no results are found I would like the label to display:

(e.g.) "No results were found that match your selection. Please try again"

I would also like the label to be invisible until a search occurs.

Thanks in advance!

how to evaluate nothing value returned by sql datareader in vb.net

When a sql query returns NULL , I can use the following code to evaluate:

While (dr.Read())
                If IsDBNull(dr(0)) Then
                End If
            End While

When a sql query returns nothing, neither IsDBNull nor is Nothing works.  I don't know why some sql queries return null while some return nothing when there are no data returned.  But anyway, can somebody tell me how to evaluate nothing value returned in sql datareader in vb.net?  When I put the cursor over signInfo variable in debug mode, I can see Nothing show as its value.  But the line does not work

if signInfo is Nothing then

How can I prioritise search results to show where document metadata has a hit first and then where t

When my users run a search against a site with a bunch of document libraries they will often search for terms that are in the title of the doc, if they do know the title they will put that in. What I would like to do is have the results ordered such that if any hits are on the document metadata (eg Title) then they are presented first and any results that are from hits on the content of the documents are presented later.

So, if they get the title spot on in their search query that document will appear first .... if they don't get it right then the likelyhood is that the title is something like what they entered so similar titled docs are presented first and then those with matching content ....

How can I achieve this?
