Localization of date formats in .NET\Windows

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :.NET Framework

We are in the process of regionalizing an application, in this effort we want dates to conform to a given regions format sub BG "d/MM/yyyy". We have implemented this using resources\culturinfo in our application. We use the resource to hold the format we need to retrieve for a given region. The backend we're using is SQL server 2008. One of the concerns we had was, even though we're displaying dates in a given format such as "d/MM/yyyy", our system still writes that data from the controls we're using in the application as "MM/dd/yyyy", this is something we want to happen, and all is great. Also literature states that SQL server logins determine the format of dates when connecting to SQL server for data updates and inserts. Since our login will have its language set to US-English, we appear to be fine. Testing of this model on a system by changing the regional settings does not affect the model in place.  My question is, with this type of model in place where the date format is driven by embedded resource (resx) files and the SQL login using US-English, are there any other machine environment setting\variables (OS or .NET framework) to consider that can cause grief? I can provide any information is needed to make my questio

SQL Server Date Formats

One of the most frequently asked questions in SQL Server forums is how to format a datetime value or column into a specific date format. Here's a summary of the different date formats that come standard in SQL Server as part of the CONVERT function. Following the standard date formats are some extended date formats that are often asked by SQL Server developers.

Multiple date formats in pipeline......

I have a large record set that contains several date columns.  The date formats are MMYY,  YYMMDD.  and YMMDD (integer format).  My requirements require that the above mentioned formats of these dates need to formatted to that of YYYYMMDD.  In addition it also a requirement that the MMYY date format be either the first of the month of last day of the month.  What would be an efficient method of processing?  Multiple data flows to handle each format?  One data flow utilizing a lookup to a calendar table?  How would I handle if needed to add other date columns into the record set at a later time.

Deploying an application using Windows Bootstrapper... localization issues in the bootstrapper itsel

First off, apologies if this isn't the correct way to post this question. It IS connected with deploying a .NET application using Windows Bootstrapper and installing the needed prerequisites.

The thing is, despite asking Visual Studio to publish a localized package, the Microsoft Bootstrapper has some strings hard-coded into the setup.exe, such as "For the following components", and these strings are always in English. So despite having created localized packages for the .NET installation (which work... mostly... I'm still new at this :P) the ClickOnce installer is still not entirely localized to my liking.

So far the only solution I found was to fire up a HEX editor and start manually changing the strings in the .EXE, which is a whole lot of painful work, especially if you need to publish some changes to your application.

Any hints or tips as to how fix this issue would be appreciated.

Localization in windows form

Can you let me know the best technique to implement the Localization in C# windows forms.or how to implement localization in C# Windows forms.

Using a CompareValidator to check input is a valid date

The CompareValidator can do more than just compare two controls. You can also compare it against several of the main .net data types such as Date, Integer, Double and Currency.

To do this you would set Operator="DataTypeCheck" and instead of setting the ControlToCompare or ValueToCompare attributes as you normally would you use the Type="Date" (or any of the data types I have listed above).

Windows Service Applications Tutorials

You can easily create services by creating an application that is installed as a service. For example, suppose you want to monitor performance counter data and react to threshold values. You could write a Windows Service application that listens to the performance counter data, deploy the application, and begin collecting and analyzing data.

Serving Silverlight Apps from Windows Mobile

Even if mobile dev is not my every day work, thanks to the .Net Compact Framework, it's still .Net programming.

Here is the scenario:

You come back home, you have a windows mobile phone wifi capable and you want to quickly get access to your phone pictures from your home network.
You just activate the Wifi, run my app and then browse to the provided link from any computer on the network.

Getting Started with Windows SharePoint Services

Of all of the capabilities of SharePoint, I thought I would start with the most basic installation - as a corporate intranet. It is likely that we will need to discuss some of the elements of SharePoint as we go along, so this also gives us the opportunity to review these elements for future reference.

Before going into too much detail, I would like to point out that you can try the core SharePoint framework (known as Windows SharePoint Services or WSS) for free. On Microsoft's Web site you can download a trial version of Virtual PC 2004 (VPC). Using VPC, you can install the Windows 2003 Evaluation Kit and the WSS add-on. This combination will give you 45 days to evaluate the setup.

Building a Searchable Phone Directory with Windows SharePoint Services

I want to continue to build out the intranet site we've started in our previous articles. A standard item in every intranet is a staff/employee list. Most companies implementing Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) are large enough to have a database that contains all employees. We will use the aggregation features of SharePoint to include data from this database into our intranet.

How To Set a Date Format In GridView Using ASP.NET 2.0

A very common desire is to set a column of a gridview to display just the month, day and year of a DateTime type. The problem is the by default, the HtmlEncode property of the boundfield attribute (
The problem is that if this field is enabled, you can not pass format information to the boundfield control. That is, if you try the following code, you will not get the desired result.

jQuery Date picker Implementation in ASP.NET

I've posted a wrapper ASP.NET around the jQuery.UI Datepickercontrol. This small client side calendar control is compact, looks nice and is very easy to use and I've added it some time back to my control library.

This is primarily an update for the jQuery.ui version, and so I spend a few hours or so cleaning it up which wasn't as easy as it could have been since the API has changed quite drastically from Marc's original implementation. The biggest changes have to do with the theming integration and the resulting explosion of related resources.

If you want to use this component you can check it out a sample and the code here:

Getting Started with Windows Communication Foundation

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) provides a unified framework for rapidly building service-oriented applications that makes it easy to build and consume secure, reliable, and transacted Web services. It unifies the capabilities in ASMX, WSE, Remoting, COM+, and MSMQ; therefore developers need to learn only one programming model.

Application Architecture in Windows Forms 2.0

Applications have special support in Windows Forms. For starters, you can manage and tailor your application's lifetime, and, when the work flow is disrupted by an unhandled exception, you can choose from several methods of response. Then, there are several application models that you can employ, including Single Document Interface (SDI) and Multiple Document Interface (MDI) applications, each of which can support either multiple-instance or single-instance mode, the former the VS05 default and the latter requiring special consideration. All applications, however, can discover and use a wide variety of information about the system and environment they execute in.

Application Architecture in Windows Forms 2.0-Single-MDI Applications

Consider an MDI application like Microsoft Excel; files opened from the file system (by double-clicking) are all opened as separate child windows within the parent Excel window.7 For the first instance of an MDI application to open a new child window to display the file that was passed to the second instance of the application, the second instance must be able to communicate with the initial instance.

Windows Presentation Foundation and your architecture

Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is a new client user interface technology that ships as part of the .NET 3.0 Framework. Architects have long faced the challenge of selecting an appropriate presentation tier technology for their applications. In recent times, if you are developing for the Windows platform, it was at least a fairly short list. You either built a web application, a smart client, a mobile device, or some combination of those depending on your target audience. Which one you picked gave you a fairly short list of practical options in the .NET space - ASP.NET, Windows Forms, and Compact Framework respectively.

New Features in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS 3.0) is the next version of WSS 2.0, released on 2007, and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) is built on top of this. Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 takes full advantage of Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 and the core Microsoft .NET 2.0 runtime. WSS 3.0 offers a lot of new features and programmability support. I have consolidated a list of new features and enhancements in the below section:
