Infopath 2010 - Updating the content type failed

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Hi there,

Ive got an Infopath form which i have published to a forms library many many times. Recently something weird has started happening on my front-end server (i'm pretty sure our infrastructure team has done something they're not supposed to, something to do with ports and firewalls or something to the like) which caused the portal pages to be inaccessible from all machines except the server itself. This has since been resolved but i'm still getting an error when trying to publish my existing Infopath Form!

The error im getting is "Updating the content type failed."  What the ____????? A proper REASON for why this damn thing failed would have been helpful!!

Can you please please please assist me in trouble-shooting this problem? I'm at wit's end!

Ive done a couple of searches and all i come up with is timeout issues and having too many columns. But I havent added any columns (fields) and this form has always published just fine till this issue arised.

updating content type failed during publishing Infopath on MOSS 2007

Hi Folks,
I am new to MOSS & Infopath-2007. I want to publish form on MOSS onto Document Library not as Content Type. Last week, i published form successfully, but suddenly since last thursday, I am not able to publish - it gives me "updating content type failed" error. :(
I am publishing with Domain Trust, no certification is sign (actually, not required in my case).

Thereafter, I tried creating new template with single button/textbox, but it gives same error.
Today, i tried with blank form, it failed again with same error.

I tried creating Form library from Infopath form as well as from MOSS, but no help.
doing Googling, i only got 2 solution - timeout or too many columns added from infopath - but in my case there are only 3-4 columns i want to publish.

I tried below links, but no help:

Error: Updating Site Content Type Failed - InfoPath 07/SharePoint 07

I have been working with InfoPath07 and SharePoint Moss 07 for two years.  I have recieved the Updating Content Type error in the past which I got around by creating new library's. This was over a year ago and happened only a couple times.

Recently, my dept did a database migration.  About 3 weeks prior to the migration I started having troubles with publishing InfoPath.

First issue, it would take about three hours for my form to go through to the form/document library.  Sometimes they would publish, other times I would get Updating Content Type Failed.

Now that our databases have been migrated, I don't have to wait three hours to get my error.  I get my error on (1)existing forms that just needed interface updated (no changes to forms content), (2) existing forms that have no content at all, (3) and brand new forms that have never existed, with no content.

I have tried:

  • Deleting some content (fields)
  • Deleting all content
  • Deleting the entire library and starting fresh (including any content types in Central Admin or workflows associated)
  • Creating a brand new form with no content type

I have been researching and trying to figure this issue out for at least three months. I am still getting this error with every form I publish to update the forms library; howe

SharePoint 2010 External Content Type and InfoPath 2010 - Numeric data type fields missing in InfoPa

Connected SQL data table to SP 2010 ECT from SQL table.  The SQL table has several fields that have a type of "numeric(3,0)".  The SP 2010 list shows all fields form SQL.  When we open up InfoPath Designer and reference the SP List data (from SQL) all of our numer fields are missing from the available fields list.

I amd going to try another data type but that hardly feels like a solution.  If anyone has any ideas please let me know!

Updating Content Type Failed

I'm fairly new to Sharepoint and Infopath.  I hope someone here can help me.

I have a large Infopath form with ~90 fields on it.  When I try to publich to the server, I get "Updating [or Creating] Content Type Failed".
I determined this to be due to the number of fields and some sort of time out issue with Infopath.  I have seen a few other posts on that and the only solution I've seen is to publish with fewer fields - that does indeed work, but it doesn't solve my problem as I need all of these fields.

I've also seen a solution to publish with fewer fileds successfully and then republish with all you need and that the "Failed" message won't matter.  Kinda true, but then I have an issue with it no longer opening in browser.

So then, I tried publishing it to my desktop and uploading it through Central Admin, activating it to a site collection, and using it that way.  That actually works the best so far, but then I get no option to select my Parent Content Type - it just picks "Form" - and that also doesn't work for me.  I need to select Parent Content Type

Then, I tried to Create a new CT from scratch and point it to the form template I recently uploaded.  I get to pick my parent and all, but none of the promoted properties are there, so they don't show up in my workflow, and that's the end of that route.

Using Additional Fields from External Content Type in InfoPath 2010 External Item Picker

Hello, we've created an external content type for our store locations. Each location in the content type has a name, id, manager, region and so on. When we use this BCS content type as a field in a list, we are given the option to "Add a column to show each of these additional fields"

What would the equivalent be in an InfoPath form? When we add an External Item Picker to a form a number of fields are included in the form's data source, including a repeating group called BDCEntity with the following fields:

  • EntityDisplayName
  • EntityInstanceReference
  • EntityId1
  • EntityId2
  • EntityId3
  • EntityId4
  • EntityId5

Entity display name appears to be what we configure as the Display Field Name in the picker properties, and the EntityId1 is the location ID, which is the identifier on the external content type. EntityId2-5 are all blank.

We use region and other location attributes in workflows so how can we access all these other fields?

Thanks for your time.

Form opening in infopath client despite Content Type settings "Display as a Web Page"

Hi all,   I have a strange behavior with my forms. The infopath template is defined as Content Type for my Form library, in the advanced settings I have checked "Display as a Web page" for the "Opening browser-enabled documents" setting. Despite that when the client is availble on the computer which is browsing the Form Library, I'm asked to "Open", "Save" or "Cancel" instead of opening the form in the browser.   Any idea why this is happening ?

Is there any way to populate an InfoPath form field with the data from the site content type column?

I have a Form library with a form template.

The templat has a field "Office name" which should not be a fixed list of values, but a dynamical list, feeded from a different type of form. I'm a novice with InfoPath - Sharepoint and I want to find out, how can I can give users a possibility to create and maintain a list of offices and also have this list as a selection list inside main library form - ALL inside one library, if possible.

I assumed that if I publish main form (Itinerary) as a library template form and lookup form (OfficeInfo) as a SiteContent, I should be able somehow to connect to siteContent column and it's information. But I cannot see how - Site Content Gallery is not appering as a Connection item.

Can I use SiteConenct for this purpose or there are other ways to create end-user lookup lists?

Thank you!

publish infopath form to sharepoint services 3.0 as content type

Infopath External Content Type Pickers

Greetings ,

i have two external content types (manager, worker) defined in sharepoint 2010. On my infopath 2010 form i have 2 external content type pickers. Now each of these pickers works fine on its down and returns me the full list of all managers or workers, but what i want to do is connect the two. So when the end user attempts to select an employee it would only show employees who have a manager_id equal to what was put in the previous external content type picker(manager).

Could this be achieved by using a combo of Association and filters?

Administratively Approved Forms and updating content type fields

Hi, I have added several fields to my InfoPath form that had to be Administratively approved by loading through Central Admin.  I used the same form XSN name but noticed that after loading up the changed form, my new fields are not showing up under the Site Content Type form columns.  My workaround thus far is to create a new form name and upload the new form to become a content type with my new columns reflected however, I think that this process of "Update existing form" should be able to do that instead of me going through a name change workaround.

Any experience on this?

InfoPath 2007 Form Content Type does not save as infopath form but as xml document.

I have a couple of infopath forms deployed to sharepoint as content types. Normally, when a user creates a new document of an infopath content type, the form opens in browser mode and ,when the user fills in the form and saves the form, a new document is created in the document library with the correct icon and progid.

This was before... Now, whenever I save a form, the form submits correctly, i see the file in de document library, BUT it has the icon of an XML document, all the infopath functionality is gone and when I click the file, I get a save as dialog...

The form itself hasn't changed that much and even when I redeploy a version that worked before it still does not work. However, when I create a new doc lib and associate the malfunctioning form there, the behavior is normal and i can still reopen the saved form.

Little sidenote: I have 7 different forms that now do not work on my test machine. It used to be only one, but after redeploying them, all of them have the same problem. Now when I deployed these forms in a production environement, the same thing started happening there. So I stopped the deployment and in production there is just the newly deployed form that does not work.

I have already tried reassociating the form to the doc lib. And everything looks normal in central administration.

Any suggestions?

Error Creating External Content Type using Sharepoint Designer 2010

I am trying to create an external content type using Sharepoint Designer 2010. I ran SD on my local machine and connected to a site on some other machine running Sharepoint Server 2010. The Db on which I want to create my ECT resides on my local machine. When I try to use User Identity to connect to my local Db server, it gives me the error that login failed for user <my domain username>. I have both sql server and windows authentication mode login enabled on my sql server. Any help in this regard is appreciated.

Provision an InfoPath form template in a content type, with "view in browser" option

Hi all.
I've to provision an InfoPath form template in SharePoint 2010 within a content type, and my form must be open in a browser.
The provision of the .xsn file and of the content type goes well, but my form always open in the client and not in the browser. Instead, if i publish my form from InfoPath 2010 using the "Publish" option and i select to publish my form within a content type, everything goes well. I can see the form in the browser.

Here is my code.
