feature fails on production

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

 I have a custom feature that allows for the creation of a custom list that pulls data in from an external third party webservice.  It works fine on our development server but won't update on our production SharePoint server.  I get no errors through the UI, it looks likes it's working, but no data comes through.  In the IIS logs I did find the following error, but need help figuring out what it means:

Error occured for solution filename.wsp - Error: copying of this file failed: feature.xml. I/O error occurred.

Solution Deployment: Error Deployment failed for filename.wsp 'SharePoint Central Administration v3'.Vdir-C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wws\VirtualDirectories\29368.

Moving a feature from dev server to production server

Hi, I have created a feature in my sharepoint development server. The development server is one location and the production server is in another location. After testing the feature in the dev server, I am not sure how to move the feature to the production server. I want to move only that feature, that is newly created and not the whole site. How to move a feature from dev server to the production server. Please explain the steps in detail, if possible. Thank you

ArrayList.ToArray fails!

In my app, I have code similar to the following:

               ArrayList alStartFrames = new ArrayList();
                byte[] abytTest = { 1, 2 };

                byte[] abytCombinedFrame = (byte[])alStartFrames.ToArray(typeof(byte));

            catch (Exception ex)

The call to ToArray always fails and the exception is caught even though I'm pretty sure alStartFrames is an array list of byte arrays. Anyone have any insight on why this is happening?! TIA

CLR Inside Out: Production Diagnostics Improvements in CLR 4

The Common Language Runtime (CLR) 4 includes new APIs that expand diagnostic support toward the production end of the spectrum. We explain how the debugging APIs support dump debugging for application crash and hang scenarios and make it easier to detect when hangs are caused by multi-threading issues.

Debugging: Root Out Elusive Production Bugs with These Effective Techniques

Errors happen. But in production, error logs often provide little or no help in pinpointing the exact line of code in which the problem originates. You can't usually isolate the root cause by modifying code in a production environment because recreating the exact same environment is very difficult due to the large number of potential software and hardware configurations. This article provides some concrete steps you can take to get at the heart of the problems in your production code.

C++ Attributes: Make COM Programming a Breeze with New Feature in Visual Studio .NET

C++ attributes in Visual Studio .NET are used to generate C++ code through attribute providers. Attribute providers generate code for COM classes, and the code is injected by the C++ compiler at compile time. This has the effect of reducing the amount of code that you need to write. In addition, with C++ attributes you no longer need to maintain separate IDL and RGS files, which makes project management simpler. This article explains C++ attributes, the process used by the attribute provider to generate code, and the code that is automatically generated. It also covers how attributes affect the registration process, how attributes can be used to generate code module entry points, and how connection points can be implemented using C++ attributes. Also explained is how these features contribute to the Unified Event Model for the .NET platform.

routing fails

I am trying to compile and run an asp.net application and am getting the following errors

 HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.

I have a starting URL of http://localhost:61431/WebSuds/Suds/Welcome and routing code

"Default",                                 // Route name
"{controller}/{action}/{page}",            // URL with parameters

App_Data - development vs production - SQLExpress

Help please, on mdf/ldf files manipulation between dev and prod App_Data folders.

My dev folder: ...\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\WebApplication1\
My prod folder: C:\inetpub\mywebsite\

There are 4 files in [dev]\APP_Data

The VS2010 publishing process copies the 4 files to [prod]\App_Data where my website users interact with them updating data therein.

Next time I publish, the files in [prod]\App_Data get overwritten, losing all current membership and app data changed by my website users.

I tried using SQL Server Management Studio, before publishing, to export current data from [prod]\App_Data\aspnetdb.mdf and myappdb.mdf, and import to [dev]\App_Data\aspnetdb.mdf and myappdb.mdf, but that brought up a bunch of detaching/attaching issues, ending up wiping out all security permissions settings of all the related files, even though I had used SQL Server Configuration Manager to stop the SQLExpress Service beforehand.

IIS Application Pool Identity:

App_Data mdf/ldf files security permission settings:
    SYSTEM: Full Control (dev/prod)
    NETWORK SERVICE: Read/Write (dev/prod)

Why do the aks master pages not get applied if the feature is not activated on the top site collecti

I installed AKS 2.0 and activated AKS feature. The problem I found was the aks master pages do not get applied if the feature is not activated on the top site collection. why is so?

example: If i activate the feature on http://<servername>/sites/<sitename> and apply the master page, I dont see any changes.

              But if i activate the same aks feature on http://<servername/ then everything started working on all sites.

              The reason i found is the CSS reference in the aks master pages.

              It reference should be given as follows:

                 for http://<servername>/sites/<sitename> ->  <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../../Style%20Library/AKS/Aks_Band_Blueband.css"/>

                 for http://<servername>/ -><link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/Style%20Library/AKS/Aks_Band_Blueband.css"/>

So my question is, am i missing anything? am i supposed to activate the AKS feature on top level site collection at any cost? if yes, why is so?

And after applying aks master pages, i see differnece in font sizes. Why the font size is getting changed?

Replicating the Keyword match feature from Google GSA

We are trying to replicate a feature in sharepoint search that the Google Search Appliance has called "Keyword Match".  You choose a keyword or phrase and map it to a url.  When a user searches with that keyword or phrase the result link that you've matched it to comes up first in the list of results.  I'm trying to find a similar feature like this in Sharepoint OOTB search web parts.  Can you advise?  Thank you!

Using Infopath form fieldnames in a workflow fails

I designed a form in Infopath and I published it on a SP2007 server to use in a workflow in a library. That goes fine. In the workflow I send an email message. I can use the fields from my Infopath form in the message that I create.
If the workfow is starts, Shrepoints sends me the message. But it does not use the fields from my InfoPtah form in the message in stead I see questionmarks.

Why doesn't it show the fields?

I alse saw (maybe this makes it clear) that when I let it dipslay the URL in the message, it show: http://1.portal.lucasonderwijs, but the actual site is whithout the "1" and it should also start with https://

Has anyone seen this before?

Thank you,
