Migrating MOSS 2007 installation from one database server to another - configuration database issue

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

The database server which our sharepoint installation is currently using is going to be shutdown and a new one is going to be put in production.

I read in some post that the configuration database cannot be moved (while the same operation type is documented for content database). Is this correct?

Isn't there a way by which I can modify my current moss installation to define the use of another sql server for configuration (and then later for content) databases?

Any other workaround or procedure?

Thank you!

SharePoint 2010 Server: Cannot manage all user profiles from upgraded MOSS SSP database

I have upgraded an SSP database to SharePoint 2010 and successfully performed User Profile Synchronization with Active Directory, however I cannot manage ALL of the user profiles in the database. I go to "Manage User Profiles" in Central Administration and perform a filtered search (i.e. I want all DOMAIN accounts beginning with "j" so I search for "DOMAIN\j" in Manage User Profiles), but I don't receive ALL the user profiles back. I receive about 8 in return when I know there are about 20 starting with "j". If I create a new AD account beginning with "j" it is successfully synched with SharePoint 2010 and I see it in the Manage User Profiles. I ran an stsadm -o sync to clear any old synchronization information, and the Forefront Synchronization Service appeared to pull in many changes to existing accounts (including ones I can't currently manage), but I still cannot manage them using "Manage User Profiles". I really need to be able to manage all the profiles so I can manually edit some fields. Can anyone please help? Thanks in advance.

Migrating ASPNET Role/Membership Database to New Server

I have an existing ASPNET role/membership database created on SQLExpress 2005 (WIndows 2003 Server). I created it under the .NET 3 framework many years ago using the aspnet_regsql.exe application in full GUI mode.

I am setting up a new Windows 2008R2 server with .Net Framework 4 and SQL Server 2008R2. I don't want users to have to recreate accounts or create roles, etc.

1. Should I backup the current database and import it into the new system, and if so do I even need to use the aspnet_regsql.exe application. (If so which version do I use, different aspnet_regsql.exe files exist in different directories (i.e., FrameWork, FrameWork64)

2. Should I just run aspnet_regsql.exe on its own and then somehow try to import the current data into those tables.

I am concerned that if I just import somehow the roles within SQL server will not be created properly.

thanks in advance,

Upsizing Database from Access 2007 to SQL Server Express 2008

I have recently downloaded and installed SQL Server Express 2008 on to my Windows XP SP3 machine, I have a large MS Access 2007 database (.accdb) I wish to export out to SQL Server. I am using the 'upsizing wizard' that is found on the 'Database Tools' tab of Access 2007. Clicking on the 'Database Tools' tab and then on the 'SQL Server' button starts the Upsizing wizard. On the first page of which I select the 'Create new database' option, the next page asks 'What SQL Server would you like to use for this database?' it already has '(local)' entered into the text box, so I leave that unchanged, I tick the trusted connection box and name the new SQL Server database and then click 'Next'. But I get the following error (it appears in a Windows information message box):

Title: Microsoft SQL Server Login
Message Text:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 2
[Microsft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]ConnectionOpen(Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQL State: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

PS. I have successfully used the upsizing wizard to export the same Access database into SQL Server Express 2005 on another machine.

What am I doing wrong this time?

Failed upgrade from wss 3.0 to moss 2007. Cannot open database "ProjectServer-live_Published" reques

While trying to upgrade from WSS 3.0 to MOSS 2007 the process finished, but it stated that it completed with errors. Those errors seem to be causing problems within the Central Administration site. I will try outline the errors the best I can from the upgrade.log file and with the actions I've been attempting. THANK YOU in advance for any and all assistance.

Issue with SAN Drive Migration in master database in clustered SQL Server 2005 SP1

In our SQL Server 2005 SP1 cluster, I have to retire the existing SAN and move all my databases to new SAN drive. I have successfully moved all datafiles (user, system databases, resource) except master database.

Even when I change the parameters in start-up from configuration manager, I am getting error when starting up from cluster administrator / configuration manager.

But I am able to start the SQL Server successfully from command line (without any flags).

When I start the SQL Server from cluster administrator / configuration manager (after changing the parameters), I see that the start-up parameters are changing back to originalpath (old SAN) .

Please let me know incase you need any more information.

Move Configuration Database to a different server

When installing Sharepoint, I accidentally selected to install it as a SQLEXPESS server located at ComputerName\Sharepoint and didn't notice. When my site hit the 4 gig limit, I moved the content database to another server quite easily.

Now I'm wondering if it is best practice to make sure that everything is on the same server. Poking around in Central Administration I notice quite a few references to the Sharepoint server, and then my Content Database which is off on it's own. Is there an easy way to migrate everything over to my new server (a cursory glance around google hasn't turned up anything yet) or should I leave it fragmented as it is?

Catch 22 Database Connection Validation Issue w/ BIDS and Production Server

I have a rather simple SSIS package that exports data through an ODBC connection from an IBM iSeries database and copies that data to a SQL Server 2005 database.  When I was designing the application, I was able to connect to the iSeries database and store the user ID and password with my BIDS project and copy the data with out any problems.  Great!

When I finished designing and testing the project, I loaded it to the production server.  The final test was to schedule the process so that it would run each night.  I didn't realize it at the time but the password that I had stored with the project in BIDS was removed from the package and various MS documentation stated that I should create a configuration file and load the password from there.  So, I made the necessary changes to the project, adding a configuration file.  The config file is in the Miscellaneous folder within the BIDS project, however, it isn't automatically copied to the bin directory when I build the project.  I have to manually save it to the server, and then after importing the project I have to manually link to the necessary config fields.

This fixed the problem with the server, however, now I can not get BIDS to save my password with the connection string from within the designer.  This is a huge problem.  I am exporting from 21 different da

Issue when using Distrib.exe to synchronize database with SQL Server 2008 Express

I am using SQL Server 2008 Express. I created a new DB and then used Distrib.exe to create and populate the tables. It worked fine. However then I deleted one of the tables and ran the command again from command prompt. It did not pick up the table that I had dropped.  I did not get any error messages but just a message saying, No replicated transactions are available. I checked the snapshot. The table I dropped is in the Snapshot. I am using a transactional Publication and Pull Subscription.  Any ideas why the the deleted table is being missed by Distrib??

Any help will be much appreciated.
