SQL Server 2008 express SQL Server Service won't start

Could really use some help. Am running XP Pro SP3.  Had 2005 Express running fine previously.  Installed 2008 Express but cannot get the SQL Server service to start.  SQL Server Agent does start though.  In log (below) it seems to be trying to access an E:\ drive that doesn't exist (did default install to C:\Program Files) - plus other issues.  Have 5gig+ free, so not sure why it's saying not enough space.  Have RTFMd the problem for a whole day with no luck.  Any advice much appreciated.   Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (Intel X86)  Apr  2 2010 15:53:02  Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Express Edition with Advanced Services on Windows NT 5.1 <X86> (Build 2600: Service Pack 3) (Hypervisor)   Error: 17054, Severity: 16, State: 1. Unable to Backup Service Master Key on SQL 2008 Express

Hi I am attempting to do a backup of the Server Master Key but it fails. The error message I am receiving is as follows: Msg 15240, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot write into file 'C:\Users\harvey norman\Documents\SQL Server Management Studio Express\SQLEXPR2008ADV_ServerMasterKey'. Verify that you have write permissions, that the file path is valid, and that the file does not already exist. The PC I am running SQL 2008 Express (64 bit) is running on Vista Ultimate (64-bit) SP2. The SQL I wrote is as follows: BACKUP SERVICE MASTER KEY TO FILE = 'C:\Users\harvey norman\Documents\SQL Server Management Studio Express\SQLEXPR2008ADV_ServerMasterKey' ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = '??' GO Note that the ?? represents the password but is not actually the password for obvious reasons. I am logged in to the PC as a user with Admin permissions.  I had a look at the destination folder, and it shows I have full control. So, I am mystified. If somebody could advise me I would really appreciate it. Many thanks in advance. Kind regards Ross Ross

Does SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Reporting Service support Shared Datasets?

I have spent a few hours trying to get this to work. I am using Report Builder 3.0 (locally), with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition on a remote web server. I am running Report Builder as an Admin under Win7 64bit. All is OK until I attempt a Save of a newly created shared dataset. The error message is: Failed to save dataset "mydataset.rsd" The feature "Shared dataset" is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. Details: The feature: "Shared dataset" is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.OperationNotSupportedException: The feature: "Shared dataset" is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. I have researched the web, and the list of features for Express Edition does not list this feature as not being supported, although it does list "Shared component library" as being missing. Could anyone please confirm the situation please. If it is  a bug, is there any fix or workaround?  John Walton

IIS7 access rights to SQL Express 2008 (both use Network Service)

I have IIS7 and SQL Express 2008 running on Windows Server 2008.  IIS7's application pool that my app belongs to is configured for Network Service account.  The SQL Server also uses the same account.  I noticed that MS no longer discourages use of Network Service account for SQL 2008 (as it used to for 2005).

In IIS5 I used to give ASPNET account selected rights to my app's database.  With IIS7/SQL 2008 - both using the same Network Service account - giving access rights to the database does not seem to be necessary.  All app's running in the pool that uses Network Service account have full access to all resources in the database.

Is this expected?  If yes, what are the risks?

FLV file in Visual Web Developer Express 2008

I'm trying to embed a flv in my web page and I don't have a clue how to do it.

I downloded and installed ASPNetFlashVideo and the tools do not appear in my toolbox.

So if anyone has a work around it would be greatly appreciated.

CSS support in visual studio 2008 express edition

I have several css style sheets I want to work with.  I have copied them into the appropriate directory structure in my project.  The styles are applied correctly.

But the manage CSS styles tool bar on the left margin doesn't seem to work correctly.  At one point I had generated a style sheet and worked with it there, but now it not only can't find the one it generated, but the attach style sheet link doesn't respond at all, nor does anything in this bar.  Same deadness with the CSS Properties bar.  With or without a style sheet loaded in the editor -- a style sheet that is active in the project such that when I run it, the styles are applied.

VB version of studio, running on Vista home basic.

PS, the design mode works a lot better than the professional version I use in my day job on XP and server 2003.

Need help uninstalling incomplete Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition with SP1

I need to get a list of programs/files that were installed when I was trying to install VWD 2008 so I can go through and remove them.  The installation did not actually install the main part of the program so I can't start with removing Microsoft VWD 2008 (a folder was created in Program files but it is empty.  I found this (below) but I'm not sure that it applies. I don't want to remove programs/files that are being used by other programs. (I can't just try to install again because there is not enough room on my hard drive)

Can't Create ODBC to Local SQL Server Express 2008

Hello. I have SQL Server Express 2008 SP1 LOCALLY on my Windows XP Professional SP3 box. I have databases already created in Access 2007 that I imported into SQL. Now I want to keep the front end Access forms for data entry but have them connect to the databases in SQL. What I can't seem to do is connect from Access to the SQL db's because I can't create the ODBC connection. When I try to connect, I get the following two 'Connection failed' errors: 1. SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 10061 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]TCP Provider: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. 2. SQLState: 'HYT00' SQL Server Error: 0 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Login timeout expired Additionally, this information may help. 1. Windows firewall is turned off. 2. In SQL Server Configuration Manager > SQL Server Network Configuration > Protocols for SQLEXPRESS, Shared Memory, Named Pipes and TCP/IP are all 'Enabled'. The order is Shared Memory (1), Named Pipes (2) and TCP/IP (3). 3. In SQL Server Configuration Manager > SQL Native Client 10.0 Configuration > Client Protocols, the above three are also 'Enabled'. The order is Shared Memory (1), Named Pipes (2) and TCP/IP (3). Double-clicking TCP/IP tells me that the default port is 1433. 4. Running "netstat -ano", I see no entries for [myIPaddress]:1433.

Deploying problem with SQL Express 2008 R2

Scientific software package works fine with SQL Express 2008 R2 on developing (mother) PC and Admin login mode, but difficulties are found elsewhere during installing and deploying on the client PCs.  We have used from year 2000 BDE (Borland Database Engine), which worked fine until now, but recently customers had been installing problems with Vista, Windows 7 and the local administration rights or permissions.   Thus I thought to test NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE authentication, as this system is hopefully working again decades with coming new Windows versions. As not need to touch databases, ADO and authentication matters during last decade, I’m newbie with those topics.  Worked now few days with this problem, installed and unistalled SQL servers according to instructions, tested different connecting strings and now cannot found correction.  Solution is maybe and hopefully simple.   Attached is log data cut from (old and many times corrected) the main mother XP platform in Admin and Client (Guest) modes.  Same tests are done also with fresh XP installation on VirtualBox.  Used connecting strings are presented inside log files:           Main mother XP at Admin login:   2010-08-20 08:24:45.82 Server      Server local connection provider is ready to accept connection on [ \\.\pip

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) update is successful but repeats installin

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) (update 1 of 1) This update seems to be stuck in a loop of installing, each time it successfull installs acccording to automatic updates. Then says it requires installing again straight away. This has been happening for 10 days now. I have tried a manual update from the website rather than automatic updates, no change. Any ideas why? Have posted in Windows update which is where I think the problem lies but they have suggested I post here also.

Having problems installing/setting up SQL Server 2008 Express/R2 for ASP.NET user management on deve

I'm a bit new to installing and configuring, well, just about anything regarding databases, so please bear with me. I'm currently building a couple of ASP.NET MVC 2 sites.  I'm following along with the MVCMusicStore tutorial, and am trying to set up user management using ASP.NET's configuration tool.  The problem is that ASP.NET can't 'see' the database. I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my laptop.  It's the version which is available on the Web Platform Installer (I believe it's Express).  When I try running the aspnet_sqlreg.exe program to set up my user management database, it can't tell that I'm running any version of SQL Server at all.  I get an exception about 'named pipes', and some other things I don't understand at the moment. Obviously, this is all a bit over my head.  Is there an idiot proof guide or tutorial available that describes, step-by-step, how to: 1. Install SQL Server 2008 on a development PC 2. How to configure it to be used by Visual Studio 2010 Professional 3. How to properly upload/modify the db on the production server with what's on the development PC Essentially, all the things that the ASP.NET tutorials gloss over.  Any suggestions, links to documentation, or other nudges in the right direction would be immensely appreciated.
