Executable runs on 32-bit but not on 64-bit

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :.NET Framework

Hi guys,

I have a project that I originally developed on a 32-bit PC. I recently received a new PC that is 64-bits and I can compile the project successfully on this machine. However, when I try to run it I get the following error, which I never seen on the 32-bit PC:

"An unhandled exception of type 'System.DllNotFoundException' occurred in Project1.exe

Additional information: Unable to load DLL 'jtag_atlantic.dll': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)"

If I take that same executable, the one that was compiled on the 64-bit PC, over to a 32-bit PC it runs fine. So I can compile it but not run it.

Some background on the dll it is complaining about. I was provided with a dll driver which was used to compile a .lib. This was done on a 32-bit machine. That .lib is linked into my project, so it actually doesn't need the dll so I am not sure why it is complaining about it.

Could the problem be that the .lib was created on a 32-bit PC?

I tried placing the dll in the working directory but that didn't work but it shouldn't need it anyway.

Thanks guys, your help is much appreciated!

Inside Windows: An In-Depth Look into the Win32 Portable Executable File Format, Part 2

The Win32 Portable Executable File Format (PE) was designed to be a standard executable format for use on all versions of the operating systems on all supported processors. Since its introduction, the PE format has undergone incremental changes, and the introduction of 64-bit Windows has required a few more. Part 1 of this series presented an overview and covered RVAs, the data directory, and the headers. This month in Part 2 the various sections of the executable are explored. The discussion includes the exports section, export forwarding, binding, and delayloading. The debug directory, thread local storage, and the resources sections are also covered.

Inside Windows: An In-Depth Look into the Win32 Portable Executable File Format

A good understanding of the Portable Executable (PE) file format leads to a good understanding of the operating system. If you know what's in your DLLs and EXEs, you'll be a more knowledgeable programmer. This article, the first of a two-part series, looks at the changes to the PE format that have occurred over the last few years, along with an overview of the format itself. After this update, the author discusses how the PE format fits into applications written for .NET, PE file sections, RVAs, the DataDirectory, and the importing of functions. An appendix includes lists of the relevant image header structures and their descriptions.

How to figure out if package runs in debug mode

Hi, I would like to know whether there is a possiblity to dynamically determine at runtime if a script is runing in debug mode or is being executed via SQL Server Agent? My goal is to prompt the user with some information e.g. initial catalog ensuring the package is being ran in the correct environment (development/production). However, as SQL Server Agent does not support MessageBoxes I would like to write some alternative code in this case. Thanks in advance!

Suite Integration Toolkit executable has stopped working On Windows 2008 R2

I am not sure what else I can say about this except I seem to run into this error each time I attempt to install any .NET Related tool above 1.1. I have tried clean out all .NET installs to reinstall but I run up against this and at this point, I have a machine that is clean of .NET 2.0 through 4.0. I am unable to reinstall because I keep running up against this problem. Framework 4.0 dll loaded by a 2.0 executable cannot find "xxxx.resources.dll"

Hello, I have an interesting situation here that I was hoping someone may be able to give some pointers on.  First my application is all provided within a class library assembly so that it can be loaded by multiple hosts.  We are investigating moving to Visual Studio 2010 and the .Net Framework 4.0 for some of the new features.  However, one of our hosts is a 2.0 click once application that we do not have the source to.  I've tried modifying the config file for the executable to add the useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy with the 4.0 as the supported runtime and setting loadFromRemoteSources as suggested by a Google search and that came close to working.  However, depending on the workflow through our client code is giving a System.IO.FileNotFoundException for various references. The message associated with the exception is Could not load file or assembly 'file:///XXXXXX.resources.dll' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified."  Were the XXXXX changes and the .dll may or may not be present depending on whether Assembly.Load or Assembly.LoadFrom was used to perform the load.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. [Addition: I forgot to mention that our app originally targeted Framework 3.5SP1] Michael Fischer

Client Javascript runs, but then page errors out when clicking on a control that uses postback

Using this script on a button click <script language="javascript"> function printdiv(printpage) { var headstr = "<html><head><title></title></head><body>"; var footstr = "</body>"; var newstr = document.all.item(printpage).innerHTML; var oldstr = document.body.innerHTML; document.body.innerHTML = headstr + newstr + footstr; window.print(); document.body.innerHTML = oldstr; return false; } </script> After it is done, I can't click on my calendar control.  I was hoping to add somethign that would force a refresh in the script, but nothing I do works. Any thoughts?  Thanks!

Data Driven Subscription problem - sub runs slowly, has 40 errors out of 300, but report server trac

I have two report servers and a single separate SQL Server 2008 server hosting the data source database and the report server catalogues. There is a data driven subscription that runs off a sproc that returns 300 rows with email addresses for this report to be emailed to. The report itself contains around 30 subreports each with its own sproc to retrieve data. As the report is executing there are long pauses between the times when emails are actually sent out, and the subscription status will finally end with something like "Done: 300 processed of 300 total; 40 errors." I am not sure how to go about troubleshooting this problem. Details: I kicked it off at (say) 2:00 PM. Within 3 minutes in the report server execution log I saw 300 entries. There were exactly 300 people who should receive reports, so the master report should have executed 300 times and sent out 300 emails. So this looked good in the execution log. But when I checked report manager's status page for the subscription it was listed as processing 50 out of 300... Then all activity stopped, about 15 minutes some more reports started emailing out, and now I see there are around 590 rows in the execution log and maybe 97 emails sent out... Then finally I get a grand total of 846 rows in the execution log and a grand total of 260 of 300 emails sent out with 40 errors so 260+40=300 exactly. The time betw

SQL Query runs much slower with sql command than in management studio

I have two UPDATE queries, when executed together in SQL Command, takes about 5 minuts. but when executing together in management studio, totally takes about only 1 minute. I have indexes on all the fields used in join. Have done some research and tries some suggested ways such as use various SET options. not quite useful. Update   n Set FITokenCount = b.TokenCount , FISignificantOPTotal = b.SignificantOPTotal , FIInsignificantOPTotal = b.InsignificantOPTotal From   @ScanDataScanResultsTableName n   INNER HASH JOIN @ScanDataTableName b   ON n.InstitutionNumber = b.InstitutionNumber and n.DataItemUniqueID = b.DataItemUniqueID ;   Update   n Set WLTokenCount = wn.TokenCount , WLSignificantOPTotal = wn.SignificantOPTotal , WLInsignificantOPTotal = wn.InsignificantOPTotal From   @ScanDataScanResultsTableName n   INNER HASH JOIN WatchListEntryNames wn   ON n.WatchListEntryNameID = wn.WatchListEntryNameID --and wn.Type = 1;   Any inputs will be greatly appreiated.   Thanks,   Kevin

Problem Creating Asymmetric Key from Executable File

In trying to create an asymmetric key from an executable file, I get an error if the path length to the dll is very long, while a short path length works perfectly.  Does anyone know what the limitation on the path length is?

Application hangs (100% cpu) outside debugger, but when debugging it runs ok.

Be prepared, this is a tricky one. One of my customers he is building a proof of concept using my software components. When running outside the debugger, the application will hang, using 100% CPU in the main thread. At this point attaching the debugger is unsuccessful. When running inside the debugger, the application runs fine. (.NET framework 3.5, Windows 7 Ultimate x86, running in VirtualBox (virtual environment)). Using Process Explorer I've tried to find some hints as to what's going on. Showing a callstack in PE at some arbitrary point when the app hangs is shown at the bottom of this post. The one line that caught my eye was this: halacpi.dll!HalClearSoftwareInterrupt+0x355 I googled around a bit, looks like a number of people ran into this, but nobody had found the true cause of/solution to this problem. One that came close was mentioning a patch for .NET framework 1.1, but there seems no information on later framework versions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/904705 Some more details from my customer seem to point in the direction of GraphicsPath, which is used quite intensively and I know this class does a fair bit of switching to native land and back (PInvoke, also mentioned in the patch above). We really need to get this one solved, so let me know what to do to get some developer support on this one. Thanks, - Wout ntkrnlpa.exe!KeSetEvent+0x2a1 ntkrnlpa.e

SQLBROWSER runs, but 'netstat -ano' doesnt show UDP 1434 (how to troubleshoot)

i have been running sqlexpress2005 sp3 successfully (installed as a named instance) to a stand alone computer. i just noticed today that when i run...   netstat -ano | findstr 1434 nothing is listed!!!  if i go to services.msc and stop and restart sqlbrowser, it says its able to be controlled, and stopped, and started. i would like to know how to troubleshoot this... is there a way to know for sure if sqlbrowser is actually binding to UPD port 1434? or is there some problem on my system that prevents this port from showing up in netstat.  here is what netstat -ano reveals... selecting dimensional attribute in Excel runs for 20 mins??

I have a cube with about 15 partitions and approximately 500m fact rows. It seems that whenever I select a dimensional attribute from any dimension it takes around 10-20 mins for the list to return.   My question is, is this using the fact table or the dimension table to pull these values? All the dimensions are built off very small tables. 500-1000 rows.   I didnt select any measures at this point btw, only the dimension attributeCraig

SSIS 2008 - Excel Source using SQL Connection cancels as soon as package runs.

Let me preface this by saying I'm brand-new to SSIS development. I'm using 64-bit SSIS 2008 and I'm trying to read an Excel spreadsheet using OLE DB. I've already run into and corrected the Run64BitRuntime problem.  Now when I invoke the Package it cancels immediately with the following output: SSIS package "Lesson1X.dtsx" starting. Information: 0x4004300A at Data Flow Task, SSIS.Pipeline: Validation phase is beginning. SSIS package "Lesson1X.dtsx" finished: Canceled. The program '[5400] Lesson1X.dtsx: DTS' has exited with code 0 (0x0). When I edit the Excel Source component itself there are no errors and I am able to Preview the results successfully.  If I use Table or View to access the file, the package runs successfully. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
