Generic list of custom class returns data in WCF service layer, but loses them in Presentation Layer

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :WCF

I'm reading this excellent article by John Papa in MSDN Data Points - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc700340.aspx

This single article alone sheds great deal of light on EF, WCF, WPF, MVP architecture, Layered Architecture with these technologies and so much more.

I'm trying to experiment with the code that comes with the article as is.

When executing the application, the service layer returns a Generic List with three Customer objects to the presentation layer. However, in presentation layer, the Generic list arrives with zero objects in the list. In the context of this application, I provide 'd' as a search criteria and hit the search button; while stepping through, I can see it returns 3 rows from the database.

With my limited experience in WCF, I am unable to figure out why it is so. This article was written  for 3.5 SP1 Beta 1. Could something changed in the general release that is causing this?

Beyond ASP: XML and XSL-based Solutions Simplify Your Data Presentation Layer

The combination of XML and XSL can provide a powerful alternative to ASP development. This article presents arguments for building even small-scale Internet applications on the XML model. An example written with traditional ASP programming is compared to the same example written with XML and XSL in order to show the benefits of this approach. The example is followed by nine good reasons to make the switch. These reasons include separation of presentation and data, reusability, extensibility, division of labor, enhanced testing, and legacy integration. The XML/XSL solutions described hold the promise of greater simplicity, flexibility, and durability than ASP solutions built the traditional way.

Same interface for service ann data access layer?

Should my service class implement the same interface as my DAL-class? Let's say I have an interface and two classes like this;

public interface IArticles
string[] GetArticles();

public class DAL : IArticles
public string []GetArticles(){...}

public class Service : IArticles
private IArticles _dal;
public Service()
_dal = new DAL();
public string[] GetArticles()
return _dal.GetArticles();

In this case, the Service uses BOTH inheritance and composition of the interface. What is the best solution?

Custom Data Layer

       Before switching to DD4. I was using L2S/Entity Framework with some customization (3 tier arch--repository pattern). So, i had my won custom layer having all the CRUD. Now, DD4 everything is happening through the built-in context.

       How can i use the custom data access layer, should i just chnage the linqdatasource and it would work ?

Know Thy Code: Simplify Data Layer Unit Testing using Enterprise Services

If you want to employ unit testing and test-driven development techniques in your database application development process, you'll have different factors to consider than you do when you're not involving a database. For example, you have to maintain a consistent state within the database and be able to roll back transactions when necessary. This article shows you how to get the best of unit testing for your database apps in a safe, usable manner.

Data Access: Implement a Data Access Layer for Your App with ADO.NET

Implementing data access functionality is a core activity of most developers working with the .NET Framework, and the data access layers they build are an essential part of their applications. This article outlines five ideas to consider when building a data access layer with Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework. The tips include taking advantage of object-oriented techniques and the .NET Framework infrastructure by using base classes, making classes easily inheritable by following guidelines, and carefully examining your needs before deciding on a presentation method and external interface.

.NET Reflection: Dynamically Bind Your Data Layer to Stored Procedures and SQL Commands Using .NET M

One major inconvenience of using SQL stored procedures from code is having to match type information. You have to write long wrapper functions around the procedures just to expose the data types. In the .NET Framework, however, the reflection services of the System.Reflection namespace allow you to query rich metadata that describe data types. This article explains how to use reflection in .NET to end your stored procedure nightmares. The author creates four custom classes, including one that generates a SQLCommand object based on the metadata of a method. Using this library, you'll be on your way to automating the generation of stored procedures.

Building a Custom Data Grid: Performing Ad Hoc Web Reporting with a VBScript 5.0 Class Object

A flexible, customizable grid for displaying data is a useful tool for ASP developers. It allows Web visitors to customize their view of your data. This article takes the data grid presented in "Ad Hoc Web Reporting with ADO 2.0" by John Papa and Charles Caison (MIND, December 1998) and adds handy features such as a finds feature that supports multiple finds and a mode for adding and editing records. This version also improves response time by allowing asynchronous record download and it componentizes the code so it can be used as a standalone VBScript class object that can be reused in other pages.

Picker returns nothing for BDC column in custom list

Playing with the BDC for the first time, running into some issues adding a Business Data column to a custom list.

I believe my ADF file is solid. I've been able to import that just fine and can use the application to drive various BDC-specific webparts (a Business Data List or Business Data Item, for example). It also seems to work when I manually enter information in my NewForm.aspx field and click the Check Names button (it verifies my entry and underlines it, creates link to profile when I view the list data).

If I try to use the picker, I get nothing. Enter a name I know is valid or a % and click the magnifying glass icon and I very briefly get the "Please Wait" message, then just an empty set with "Type into the search box above then press "Enter" to start your search" where my results should be.

Any pointers? Thanks.

All data in class properties disappear across WCF service

Hi, I have a class that i share betwee silverlight client and wcf service. I populate properties of the class with real data from the client, to be used in the server. I use debugger to step through the code when the call gets to the server, all the data ara gone and are replaced with null. All DateTime value change to 1/1/1001. But if pass primitive types such as int, string, no problem. This is happening only on one machine, but not on ther machine. Can someone tell me what is going on here? Thanks in advance

How to query for id's of the fields with List Data Retrival Services Query() web service

Since i marked a post as answer in my previous topic, it seems that people dont visit the topic anymore as they see it as "answered" while it actually is only partially answered. So i guess i have to ask again in a different topic.    I need to get data from Sharepoint Server (3.0 i belive) for my Integration Services project. For that i use Sharepoint's webservices. I've read tutorials and downloaded sample programs to talk to WSS web services. I realise i have two ways to get items in a list: Use Query() or GetListItems(). Problem is, GetListItems() has a mandatory "Row limit" field and i might have to import ALOT of fields, so i thought Query() is better for me.  But, when using GetListItems(), the WSS returns the ID of the fields (for example, for a field of type user, something like "395;Ivanov Ivan Ivanovich" is returned) but when using Query() for the same list, WSS returns only the field value ("Ivanov Ivan Ivanovich") without the ID. I need it to return the ID as well. How can i set it up, on my side or server side, so i would receive the ID's, not only the values of the fields that are actually linking to something by ID when i use Query() web service?

How to separate Presentation Layer, DA Layer and BLL?

Hello Everyone, Can anyone help me to understand how to separate layers in 3-tier architecture if it is possible here? I have a form (Default.aspx) that collects the user inputs (txtFirstName, txtLastName, txtStreetAddress, txtCity and txtZipCode) and save into a table (tblStudentInfo) and display that data into the GridView, Form View and Datalist. I have four buttons on this page. First one is the "Submit" button to submit the data into Database. Other three buttons are to display the data either in GridView, FormView or DataList. When users click on one of these three buttons it will redirect the user to Display.aspx, formview.aspx and datalist.aspx. This page also contains label to show the message weather the insertion was successful or not. "tblStudentInfo" has following definition. tblStudentID--------int--------Primary key tblFirstName-------varchar(50) tblLastName-------varchar(50) tblStreetAddress---varchar(200) tblCity--------------varchar(100) tblZipCode--------varchar(10) Stored Procedure: "InsertStudentInfo" ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.InsertStudentInfo         (@tblFirstName VARCHAR(50),         @tblLastName   VARCHAR(50),         @tblStreetAddress VARCHAR(200),         @tblCity VARCHAR(100), &

Connecting a Sharepoint Custom list with an external Data-source

Hi I am planning to connect a Sharepoint Custom list with an external Data-source. External DB will be in Access 2007 format. More Information: I need a solution that we can connect our sharepoint list (one-way) to online db in a way that new  information is directly updated in the sharepoint list, whilst other info changed in sharepoint list  is not synced back to original value. Is there a way to solve this? -saumil

Help with creating graphs in a site page from figurative data in custom list

Guys Can anyone provide me with someone help please? I need to be able show a graphs/line format in a web part of a site page on my SP 2010 site. I want to use some changing figurative data that is contained within a custom list change a the line/pie chart graph on the fly that is located within a chart/line graph in a site page. Basically when the data in the custom list gets changed by my resources I want to be able to see the changes in the graph almost like a live dashboard. I would be very greatful for some help. Note: I am not a coder nore do I ever claim to be, but if I could get a step by step guide on how to achieve this then I would be very greatful. I have a good understanding of SP but I am not to the coder. I able to supply the list if necessary and if someone could provide me with the code/or if code is not necessary for this task then please can you advise how? Issue with Data Access Layer DLL

Hi, I am working on a project in which I have made changes to LINQ to SQL code in data access layer project. Initially the code was using Single() extension method, I have changed it to SingleOrDefault() was earlier method was throwing exception if no records found in db. After making changes I ran the project but during debugging VS 2008 was showing that file is changed and do you want to reload the file box. When selected the file, the debugger was still executing the commented code (Single() method). I tried cleaning the entire solution and rebuilding it but it did not help. All the projects (Presentation, BL, DAL) are under single solution. Can any one please help me to solve the issue? Thanks in advance.

Best way to display data of a single column from a Sharepoint Custom List

I'm trying to create pages that will automatically populate with data pulled from a sharepoint list (like title, department, contact info, etc.).   I'm using publishing pages. What would be the easiest way to do this, and how would I specify which data to pull from the list? For example, the page would be set up like this: [Title:biology] [Department:biology] [Contact Info:biology]   and when the page loads, it would look like this: Biology Lab Biology Department 123-456-7890   I want it to just pull the data -- I don't want a list view or anything like that.  I need this page to look pretty, and I need the each column's data to show up in a very specific place. How could I make pages that would do that?
