Custom Web Application URL is not working.

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I have created a web application on port 80 and have created a site collection for it. I have assigned the web app a custom URL.  SharePoint by default tries to insert the server name as the URL. For some reason, when I use a custom URL, the site is not accessible. However, when I leave the default server name, the site is suddenly accessible. Why is this the case and how can I make it so I can use custom URLs? Thanks.

Hey Folks

I am working on a project currently where I need to get data out of a 3rd party vendor's software that uses a .sdf file I looked this up and its a SQL CE file. I was hoping to just link to with with access but thats apparently not going to happen. I need to link to the database extract data from it to a csv file for later use. I also and most important I need to get the data from it and create a report that can be printed while on a customers site that my or may not have web access so I need for this program to be on and off line. I had my webapplication that I have been working on open and was able to bring up the sdf file under the server exploere however I can't seem to get anything out of it when I try to do grid views or detail views errors out.

Can I use one of Visual Studio projects to create this sort of applicaiton if so what would be the best approach. I would love to get an access odbc driver since office is allready installed on the employee's laptop's

Enterprise Library: Take Exception To Critical Errors With Custom Application Blocks

Enterprise Library is a collection of application functionality blocks that you can re-use in your application for common functionality you'd otherwise have to write again and again. Here Jay Hilyard explains how to use them.

.NET Internals: Tailor Your Application by Building a Custom Forms Designer with .NET

The design-time architecture of Windows Forms in the .NET Framework has made development much more flexible than it had been with MFC. With Windows Forms, you can drag one of your custom controls from the toolbox and drop it onto the Visual Studio design surface and even though Windows Forms knows nothing about the control, it's able to host it and let you manipulate its properties-not possible in MFC. In this article, the author discusses what's going on under the covers as you design your forms and then walks through the creation of a bare-bones forms designer.

Stress Testing: Custom LoadGenerator Tool Identifies the Issues Your Application Faces Under Stress

It's easy to postpone stress testing when developing an application, and it's easy to forgo it altogether. Having an easy-to-use framework at your fingertips to conduct these tests can make the task far less painful. This article walks you through an application that eases the task of generating load for a variety of layers within an application.

Error Handling: Throwing Custom Exception Types from a Managed COM+ Server Application

Exception handling semantics in .NET are based on type, so you can create custom exceptions that have their own properties and methods. In .NET, exceptions are first-class citizens, and since they're the built-in error handling mechanism, all .NET-compliant languages must support exceptions. In addition, COM+ services are available to .NET code as Enterprise Services, so you can leverage exceptions in your Enterprise Services design. In this article the author describes custom exceptions, throwing exceptions across COM interop boundaries, and working with Enterprise Services.

SharePoint Designer: insert custom list not working anymore

Hello,

Suddenly sharepoint designer decided today that it doesn't want to insert a custom list form anymore...
To be more specific, it doesn't work anymore in a site that uses the Microsoft budgeting and tracking template. In a website that uses an out of the box template, it still works.

It did work before, because I did it in other websites using the same template (it's broken there as well now).

Why oh why does SharePoint refuse to do this now?
I searched google and here on the forums, but all I could find was some issues after installing SP1, but we did that already long time ago and it was still working after that. I checked with our infrastructure guys and they didn't install new updates they say.

I also tried the solutions listed here: http://blogs.msdn.com/spdsupport/archive/2008/07/03/how-to-fix-custom-list-forms-will-not-insert-or-show-up-on-the-design-surface-of-sharepoint-designer.aspx
But they don't fix the problem.

So my problem is, I can go to Insert > SharePoint Controls > Custom List Form
I pick my list, content type and form type, I hit OK and... nothing happens.

Managing Custom Configuration Options for a SharePoint Application

Learn how to store configuration data in various ways, including inside the web.config file on front-end Web servers, by using the property bag on various Windows SharePoint Services objects, storing configuration data within SharePoint lists, and by using the hierarchical object storage.

Custom actions and URL tokens when working with the Ribbon

I'm trying to add a new item to the Ribbon using a custom action in a VS SP2010 project. The new action shows up where we want it but the problem we are facing is that tokens like {ItemId} or {SelectedItemId} are not parsed when used in the CommandAction attribute. I would like to use these tokens and construct a URL pointing to an application page we've created. In the same way one can do using UrlAction when adding custom actions to the ECB menu (this is working fine in our project). The custom action below simply prints out different tokens. When run it seems like the tokens {SiteUrl},{SelectedListId} and {SelectedItemId}are parsed but for me both SelectedListId and SelectedItemId are null. Are there any other tokens that can be user or is there a better way to get hold of the item and list for the context? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <Elements xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/"> <CustomAction Id="{1f2da003-2069-4d4a-8fc5-1deeb98ecdda}" Location="CommandUI.Ribbon" Sequence="20"> <CommandUIExtension> <CommandUIDefinitions> <CommandUIDefinition Location="Ribbon.ListForm.Display.Manage.Controls._children"> <Button Id="{ca157255-5ef3-4f1c-bcb6-6ff5ff7610fe}" Command="{7887e42e-

Secure Service Store and custom web application.

Hello All,  I have a problem for which I would like to use the Secure Service Store.  I've searched for similar solutions involving the SSS but I've not had any success yet.  Maybe I'm missing something obvious or going about it the wrong way.   We have an external application (actually, a number of external applications) we'd like to embed in our SharePoint site using an iframe or the Page Viewer web part.  The embedded application uses a custom forms based authentication scheme and I want to prevent the situation where a user has to log into our application then log into the embedded application.  Is there anything available the help post the credentials from SSS to the custom application?  The only think I can think to do is write some code that mimics a post to the login page of the embedded app and, if needed, write a stripped down or simpler login page for the embedded app to make that easier.  For my immediate task I have quite a bit of control over the source of both application and could write custom code on both sides if I had to, but I'd rather have a solution that only involve configuration or, at most, custom code on the SharePoint side.  Thanks,  Brandon

Trying to build a custom application to crawl SharePoint Search

Hello,      I have been tasked with building a custom application to develop a report dynamically based upon a search ran in a SharePoint site using user-defined keywords. What I need the application to do is this: 1.) Access the results of a search, and do a full fidelity save of each item. 2.)  If the item returned is a document in a library and it has other versions associated with it, access the meta-data of those other versions and group those results with the item found in the search. 3.) Store the results in XML (probably the easiest), and build a custom display for reporting purposes. If anyone has any advice on how I can accomplish this, I would be very grateful, Thanks!

How To Use a Specific Sites' Master Page for my custom asp.net application

I have a custom application that I migrated to sharepoint (compiling into single DLL and creating a fodler for it in the layouts folder in 12 hive) Currently, I am using ~/_layouts/application.master as my masterpage for the custom application. However, i would like to use a certain site's master page for my application versus the default one. For instance, I would like to use the master page from this sub site www.maindomain/sites/subsite/ Thanks for your help.

SSRS custom security extension behind a router fire wall not working

I have a instance of SSRS 2008 installed (we are not using IIS) with custom security extension which accepts a application user ID and password and sends back a sql authorization cookie back to client for logging into SSRS.  The (SSRS) server is behind a router,  SSRS is configured on port 81,  Port 81 in router if forwarded to the SSRS server. Here is the problem If I am inside the router firewall (RDP'ed to the machine) I am able to access report server (http://xx.xxx.xxx.xx:81/ReportServer) and reports manager (http://xx.xxx.xxx.xx:81/Reports) without any issues. If  am outside the firewall and try to go to report server page (http://xx.xxx.xxx.xx:81/ReportServer) from browser and try to login it works (I am getting the cookie back and authentication goes through fine).   But if I try to access reports manager (http://xx.xxx.xxx.xx:81/Reports) the login page shows up when I enter user ID and password and hit enter to authenticate it comes back to the login screen (I am not gettint the cookie back from SSRS). Any help is highly appreciated on how to debug /fix this issue. Note : if I first login to Reportserver (which sends the cookie back) and in the same session I login to Reports Manager I am able to get into Reports Manager page since I got the cookie when I logged in to reports server page already.  When I

Retract custom master page feature and all site pages stop working

There is a requirement to apply custom branding on personal sites in a SP 2010 project. For this I have created a feature which uploads and applies the custom master page on creation of any new personal sites.   I have stapled this feature (using feature stapling concept) to the “SPSPERS” (personal site) site definition. The custom master page is displayed on the creation of new personal sites. On feature deactivation, I am looping through all the personal sites (as the feature is deployed on a team site) and pointing the master URL back to v4.master. But when I retract the solution and browse to the personal site, I am getting a “404 File not found” error.  But am able to view the settings page by typing the URL.   I activated the publishing features and looked at the master page applied to the personal site. It was pointing to v4.master.   Any help on this is appreciated. Regards, Neha
