Checking if SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition 3.1 (CE) is installed

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 20, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I am developing a Windows desktop application which requires the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (SQLServerCE31-EN.msi) to be installed. I am using InstallShield 2011 to install this as a pre-requisite during the installation process.

In order to come up with the pre-requisite definition I used Process Monitor to see that these registry locations are checked when SQLServerCE31-EN.msi is run manually (not via the installer):

32-bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.1

64-bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL

Utilizing SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (ENU) on a Windows 7 (64-bit) Platform

Dear MSDN experts,

Windows Update has automatically installed SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (ENU) along with numerous Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable downloads, an 2005 ATL Update, and Framework.NET 4.0. I am a computer novice but because of these updates, I am interested in applying Microsoft developer tools. I would like to know the best approach to utilize these installs and am trying to ask appropriate questions to the most relevelant forms.

I have searched the Learn Category in MSDN and the closest approach I have found is to obtain what I believe are the necessary packages to apply SQL Server namely, the 2008 Management Studio (what is the best version and download source?), Visual Studio (what is the best version and download source?), and/or SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Online Books (can I read them online or do I have to download them?). Are these packages available to me and are they free?

Will the utilization of this server allow me access to external databases for import to Microsoft Access and Excel? So far I am puzzled as how to sign in on any server source.

Thank you for the time and effort for this humble student to get initiated in MSDN Development. fcZZ.

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) update is successful but repeats installin

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) (update 1 of 1) This update seems to be stuck in a loop of installing, each time it successfull installs acccording to automatic updates. Then says it requires installing again straight away. This has been happening for 10 days now. I have tried a manual update from the website rather than automatic updates, no change. Any ideas why? Have posted in Windows update which is where I think the problem lies but they have suggested I post here also.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) - will not download.install on W

I have tried and tried unsuccessfully to get this download to install properly. I get no error message at all but it quite clearly is not working properly. This has all ready taken me hours and hours of my time with no success (after following the fixes mentioned on this site). I look forward to suggestions at to how to proceed that may actually work. Many thanks cdbc81

ODBC Driver for SQL Server Compact Edition

I know that there is no ODBC driver available for SQL Server Compact Edition version 3.5.  Do you plan to add an ODBC driver in future release? If yes, is it high in your priority list?   The scenario why I am looking for an ODBC driver is to connect an MS Access application to a SDF file instead of MDB file.  This will enable me to easily sync the SDF file with SQL server repository using the new Data Sync Services.   Mario Cardinal MVP Solutions Architect

SQL Server to SQL Server Compact Edition Database Copy

I recently switched from XP to Win 7 and am getting an error when using the SQL Server to SQL Server Compact Edition Database Copy wizard from johnnycantcode.com (link). I suspect that the problem is with the configuration of the path for the DQL CE dll. 1) Does anyone know where the configuration is set? It isn't in the GLT.SqlCopy.exe.config file in the local directory. 2) Has anyone got the program to run under Win 7? Thanks marc

Which SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack to Install?

I have Windows 2008 Small Business Server Standard Edition.  When I scan for updates I get two different SQL service packs showing up, with the same KB955706 number.  I'm wondering which I should install, or if both, what order to install them in?  The first one is labeled: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 The second one is labeled: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services Service Pack 3 For applications, I have Blackbaud The Financial Edge v7.78 (accounting package for clubs) installed that uses SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for its database engine.  The new upgrade for this software requires SP3 which is why I need to know which service pack to install.  Also, please let me know if there are any tricks to getting the service packs installed on 2008 SBS Standard Edition.  I know sometimes registry settings need to be changed for SQL service packs to be installed properly. Thank you for your help.

Cannot select 'SQL Server Compact Edition' from Server Type drop down

I have seen this issue addressed for SQL Server 2005 but not 2008. I have installed these components:SQL Server 2008 (Browser, Management Objects, Native Client, Policies and Setup Support Files)SQL Server Compact 3.5 (for Devies, Server Tools and SP1)In the SQL Server Management Studio, on the Connect to Server dialog, the "Server Type" drop down list is disabled and "Database engine" is the default. Does anyone know what I need to do to make "SQL Server Compact Edition" a choice in the "Server Type" drop down list?

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition - GUI to set permissions on stored procedures

Hi there, I have SQL Serve 2005 Express Edition (Build 2600: Service Pack 3) installed; I also have the Management Console installed. My problem is that I cannot set execute permission, or any other type of permissions on my stored procedures through the GUI, as the Property menu item is missing from the right click menu. I read somewhere that this happens when you have SP1, but as I stated above I have got SP3 installed... Any help?   Regards, D.

Uable to successfully install SQL Server 2005 (Express Edition) Service Pack 3 (KB955706)

After repeated attempts, I am unable to install the MSSQL Server 2005 (Express Edition) Service Pack 3 (KB955706).  From Live Update, the installation initializes but then reports that it was unable to install.  The first couple of times I received Error Code 0x65B, but that doesn't come up any longer. I have ACT! Database version 2007 (9.0) and it is unable to access the database to open it because it uses the MSSQL??  Also, there used to be an MSSQL icon below in my system tray, but that no longer appears.  When I reboot it will be on briefly, but then goes away.. MS Customer Support has attempted to help (Case ID SRX1135612820) but now tell me that this is beyond their expertise.  They had me try to reload MMSQL 2005 but no change. Please help! Thanks!!  Terry

Can a row on a "SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5" have more than 8000B in size ?

Hello, I am trying to use SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 for a desktop PC application. I need to have a table with 5 columns. One of this columns will contain a data that can grow up to 1MB in size. I have read in wikipedia specifications that the maximum row size, this engine is capable to handle, is of 8000B. However, when designing the table, I can choose "image" type. So, can a row on that table have more than 8000B in size? Is there a maximmum limit ? Cheers Valentin
