Deployment of SharePoint Server 2010 on Windows 2003 Server Std Ed

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 19, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

After reviewing http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262485.aspx document on hardware/system requirements it appears that I will need to upgrade my Windows 2003 Server Std Ed to at least Windows 2003 Enterprise Ed in order for SharePoint Server 2010 Ent to be able to address more than the 4 GB (I believe) Windows 2003 Std only allows or addresses.  I have 32GB RAM on my Windows 2003 Std which also hosts the SQL Server 2005 Std Ed databases for other apps and will host SharePoint's database, as well--single platform install.  I also have two CPUs on this box which SQL (32 bit) uses.

So my question is:  can I easily upgrade Windows 2003 Std Ed to Enterprise without having to reinstall Windows 2003 and subsequently all other apps in Windows?

MOSS 2007 to SharePoint Server 2010 Hybrid Upgrade Approach on Windows Server 2003 x64

There's some guidance circulating about upgrading to 2010 with a mix of In-Place and Database Attach upgrade methods. My Central Admin and SharePoint Web App are on a 64 bit server, but it's running on Windows server 2003 x64 and not on Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2. SharePoint Team Blog says Server 2008 or 2008 R2 is required for SP2010. If I want to do the hybrid upgrade approach, is it possible to first upgrade the OS to Server 2008 R2 on the server where my Central Admin and SP Web App runs?  Or will this break MOSS 2007?

Import Word docs with Metadata into SharePoint 2010 from Windows Server 2003

I need to import 700 Word docs (2003 & 2007) from Windows Server 2003 into a SharePoint Server 2010 library.  I only have a test server to work with right now and want to do as much pre-work before we launch the actual server.

My goal: When we launch the shpt server, import all docs into a library so that columns propagate with metatdata automatically.

I'm not sure what the best approach is...

Can I can open each doc and add custom properties (maybe with InfoPath) to import as metadata, then import managed metadata through the term store tool and have it associate with the manually entered custom properties? I don't fully understand managed metadata, which might pose a problem.  And before I start importing terms, I thought I should find out if I've completely misunderstood how taxonomies work.

Or I have an excel spreadsheet with info about each doc in columns that can act as metadata. I could upload this as a list then associate each doc with the list.  But it seems wiser to enter the metadata into the documets.

Is it possible to update my docs in advance so that uploading goes smoothly? I have help now for data entry that I won't have later.

I have no resources to spend on tools, and have to figure out and build this&nbs

Sharepoint 2003 + Windows Terminal Server 2008 + Office 2007 problem?

Hi, We have a customer where some users runs Windows Terminal Server 2008 with Office 2007. They open documents from a Sharepoint 2003 site. When they open an excel sheet they get a button in the document which says "Server workbook: Click edit workbook to edit this workbook" and there is a button: "edit workbook" The users clicks "edit workbook" but get an error message saying there is no connection to the server.  They are able to edit the document, but not save it back to the sharepoint site. Most other users work on their local computer with Office 2003. Here, everything works fine and there are no button/message stating its a server workbook.   Is this caused due to some compatability issues between Sharepoint 2003 and Office 2007?   Best regards, Thomas Hansen ErgoGroup AS

Can WEBDAV be disabled in Sharepoint 2010 on a Windows Server 2008 R2?

Hello, we had some issues with WEBDAV use with Sharepoint 2010 placed behind WEBSeal proxies. We decided to only use FPSE (front page server extensions) for an external access to this portal. I cannot find a way, how to disable WEBDAV, or how to force clients to only use FPSE with this portal. It is fair, to say, that we would like to make such configuration on a server side, rather then configure client computers. We are running Sharepoint 2010 on a Windows Server 2008R2 server (i.e. IIS 7.5) thank you in advance for help/ideas Roman Cernovsky

Search for people in Sharpoint Server 2003 from Sharepoint Server 2010.

Anyone know how to setup so that Sharepoint 2010 crawls Sharepoint 2003 people?

We have tested adding a new content source called People with a content source type of sharepoint and used sps://site.domain.com/site$$$people as the start address.

When trying to SAVE/OK we get the following error.

The start address "sps://site.domain.com/site$$$people" is not valid for this content source type.

Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 + Office 2010 cannot connect to SharePoint 2010

I have a Windows 7 x64 machine, with Office 2010 x86 installed.  I also have (2) Server 2008 and (2) 2008 R2 machines with Office 2010 x86 installed on them. On all of these machines I can not connect to SharePoint 2010 using Office.  The following occurs:

  • From the browser, browse to a doc lib.
  • Click on an Office document, select "Edit in Microsoft ..."
  • An "Open Document" dialogue box appears, indicating that "Some files can harm your computer. If the file information below looks suspicious, or you do not fully trust the source, do not open the file.  File Name: Whatever.docx  From: SPServer2010.  (This is the first clue that something is not working properly.  I don't think this would appear otherwise)
  • Click OK.
  • The document opens, but with a [Read-Only] in the title bar.
  • If I click save, it tries to save to a default location on my desktop computer.

Another example of the problem:

  • Open an Office 2010 application.
  • Click File>Open
  • In the Open dialogue box, type in the URL of a document lib on the server.
  • The error message: You can't open this location using this program. Please try a different location.

Final example of the problem:

  • Click Upload Multiple

Client can't connect to WCF on deployment machine Windows 2003 Sp2 server .NET 3.5

I have a WCF service hosted in a Windows service application.  I have a Windows Form client that connects to it.  I am using net.tcp binding for two endpoints.   It all works fine in my environment, but when I deploy it on my cutomer's machine the client does not get a response from the service.

I ran netstat -na and I can see the endpoints listening.  I can even see the connection ESTABLISHED when my client runs the first method.  But my client times out and receives a "Could not communicate with XXX service.  This request operation sent to net.tcp..... did not receive a reply within the configured timeout (00.01.00) The time alloted... etc"

I tried removing all security from the configuration file, but that did not make a difference.

I reinstalled .NET Framework 3.5

I added     System.Net.ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit = 200 as suggested in another post.

I am creating a trace for the client and the server.  The server does not log any activity of a connection.  The client is catching a communication exception.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  What else can I try to see why the client is not able to chake hands with the server on this particular machine?

Many thanks,

Accessing SharePoint 2010 Data with Server-Side APIs

Accessing SharePoint data in server-side solutions is one of the most common tasks that you will perform as a SharePoint developer. SharePoint 2010 provides powerful server-side APIs that enable you to retrieve, add, edit, and delete SharePoint data programmatically. SharePoint 2010 also includes the new LINQ to SharePoint technology that enables you to work with SharePoint data efficiently and easily.

Windows Server 2003: Discover Improved System Info, New Kernel, Debugging, Security, and UI APIs

There's a lot to say about Windows Server 2003. First of all, it's the first operating system with built-in .NET Framework support, and it's the first 64-bit OS from Microsoft. But wait, there's more! There are lots of new features and APIs in this version as well. For instance, Windows Server 2003 features Hot Add Memory and a number of other arcane new tidbits. There are new APIs for handling threads, directories, and files, and new features like the low fragmentation heap for managing memory and system information. There's vectored exception handling and new UI APIs as well.OS internals expert Matt Pietrek takes a look at the additions he finds most interesting and useful so you'll have a good place to start when you dive into Windows Server 2003.

Security Briefs: Exploring S4U Kerberos Extensions in Windows Server 2003

Building Web sites that provide services external to the corporate firewall is tricky. Usually it's not desirable to grant corporate domain accounts to external clients, and from a purely practical standpoint Kerberos does not work well over the Internet due to the typical configuration of client-side firewalls.

Office Sharepoint Server Search not working but Windows Server Search is.

I am having an annoying Issue with the Sharepoint 2007 Enterprise search functionality. I cannot get the Search Centre to work, the out of the box webparts crash the page except the Searchbox when the others are closed. The event viewer shows up numerous Errors (Office Sharepoint Server - EventID 7080) returns with and the same when trying to add a search related web part (e.g. core.results, federated etc). EventID 6398 - Timer is a regular as is 7080. Details below.

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified).

Remote connections are connected, I am not 100% on the Instance name, (how would I go about checking this?)

Also I cannot access the link to SharedServices1 - Open Shared Services Admin site (not clickable), guess it's permissions but I seem to have full site permissions, I think I need SSP-Admin to make more edits to the Search, maybe this is related :s

Both Search Servers are runnig, I have tried everything I can think of to fix this and allow the Search Centre to work.

I am running Sharepoint 2007 on SQL Server 2008.
