Adding named instance of SQL Server 2005 failed - "Error Locating Server/Instance Specified"

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 19, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

We are trying to add a named instance to our Windows 2003 R2 x64 SP1/SQL Server 2005 SP3 server.  It has been running for about 3 years now with a single (default) instance.  When trying to add a named instance, it fails when it gets to the point where it is Updating System Databases - "SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration.  The error was:[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Refer to server error logs..."  We are using the local service account for both the default and new named instance.  Allow Remote Connections to This Server is enabled on the default instance.

In Services, the new SQL Server service has started, but I cannot start the SQL Server Agent - it says it started and then stopped.  I cannot access the instance with SMS.  I rebooted the server and tried the process again with identical results.  I have successfully added a new instance to my test SQL Server using the same install files. Can anyone shed some light in this issue?  Thanks.

Login Failed for User "XXX" when login from a ETL machine for Sql Server 2005 SP2

Hi Guys, I have a straange issue with Login Failed errors coming intermittently probabaly twice in a week: I have a  production Database on Server A and we have Two ETL servers on Server B and Server C. Sometimes when the ETL's (SSIS) run from SERVER B I do get an error stating login failed for user "XXX" this user is a sql server user. And when I run the same package from Server C it does not give any error and runs smoothly. Both the packages uses the same configuration file to connect to the same database with the same user credentials. Also this error is not a frequent error but comes along once or twice in a weeK. Can anyone shed some light on this and let me know the root cause. Both servers have the same sql client version as well. All servers mentioned above are 64 bit windows 2003 servers. Raju

Instance and Default connection properties on SQL Server 2005

We had a sql server fail and I have been having troubles.  I compared the connection properties on the server properties and noticed that multiple default settings are no longer set.  So I'm wondering if during the failure these could have some gotten flipped.  DB's that worked all of a sudden don't work and we had to migrate to a different instance.  I have never changed any of the setings below and wonder what impact they would have if I changed them back to the default of an installed instance? ansi warning is checked ansi padding is checked ANSI NULLS is checked arithmetic abort is checked quoted identified is checked No Count is checked concat null yields null is checked Could anyone tell me how clearing these checked options will impact my db?   -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCITP: Enterprise Administrator MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, Vista, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 http://www.pbbergs.com    Twitter @pbbergs Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in starting the Process for the User

Could someone help with this please? I'm using VWD 2010 to build a new web site - I tried to add a new database file but it won't do it. I started by clicking on the folder 'App_Data', then right clicking and selecting 'Add new item' - after that I tried to add an SQL Server Database but received this message...  'Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in starting the Process for the User Instance' What does this mean? How do I start the 'Process for the User Instance'?  I imagined all that was done for me at the install stage, when I installed VWD2010, but it appears not.  Thank you for any help at all.    Regards

Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server

 I am creating asp.net forms authentication. When I run web site and there I try to create new user I get this error: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The following configuration requirements are necessary to successfully check for existence of the application services database and automatically create the application services database: If the applications App_Data directory does not already exist, the web server account must have read and write access to the applications directory. This is necessary because the web server account will automatically create the App_Data directory if it does not already exist. Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local appl

Hello everybody.I am working on Login control and I am new in ASP.NET. So far what I did is :1. In Website->ASP.NET Configuration I change the form authentication to internet.2. I created a user profile3. This gave me a ASPNETDB.mdf database.4. I added this code :<connectionStrings> <remove name="LocalSqlServer" /> <add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> </connectionStrings> in web.config file.4. I added login control to my login page :<%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/MasterPage.master" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Login.aspx.cs" Inherits="Login" Title="Untitled Page" %><asp:Content ID="MainContent" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContentPlaceHolder" Runat="Server"> <h1>Please Login</h1> <asp:Login ID="LoginAuth" runat="server" > </asp:Login></asp:Content> 5. And the login.aspx.cs file has :using System;using System.Collections;using System.Configuration;using System.Data;using System.Linq;using System.Web;using System.Web.Security;using System.Web.UI;using System.Web.UI.HtmlControls;using System.W

named instance sql server 2008 install on cluster

I have a production two-node cluster with sql server 2008 sp1 cu7 running over windows server 2008 sp2. If I were to install a new named instance on this live environment, would it impair the default sql server instance functionality? I'm not referring to processor/io while the install is in progress. My question specifically is would the install process by its nature bring down the default instance. I'm pretty sure it won't, but don't see any documentation that would confirm this. thanks.

SQL Server 2005 "Login failed for user" sa

I have not been able to install SQL Express SP2 (standard or advanced) on Vista Ultimate (RTM). Every time I try to install, I get the following error message: SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'sa'. Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information. When I check the logs, the only information I can find that is at all useful is: Doing Action: Do_sqlScriptPerfTime Start: Do_sqlScript : Thu Mar 01 21:35:42 2007Service MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS with parameters '-m SqlSetup -Q -qSQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS -T4022 -T3659 -T3610 -T4010' is being started at Thu Mar 01 21:35:42 2007SQL service MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS started successfully waiting for SQL service to accept client connectionsService MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS started at Thu Mar 01 21:35:48 2007SQL_ERROR (-1) in OdbcConnection::connectsqlstate=28000, level=-1, state=-1, native_error=18456, msg=[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'sa'.         Error Code: 0x80074818 (18456)Windows Error Text:   Source File Name: lib\odbc_connection.cppCompiler Timestamp: Wed Jun 14 16:28:15 2006     Function Name: OdbcConnection::connect@connectSource Line Number: 148 Has anyone else run into this issue and resolved it? Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services in Visual Studio

I used SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services (not SQL Server 2008 Express) in Visual Studio 2010 because it is the fast and easy way to developed and managed data-driven applications with powerful built-in reporting and full-text search functionality. I received Sql Server 2008 Service Pack 1 with Windows Update. It's ok if I connect to instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services (with SP1) through SQL Server Management, but if I try to attach a database in Server Explorer (Visual Studio 2010), I get the following error: "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I'm stuck at this point. Is there a fix or a workaround? I've already tried deleting the 'C:\Users\Administrtor\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS' directory as mentioned in other posts, with no luck. The error.log at 'C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS\error.log' has the following relevant entries: 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server      Error: 17156, Severity: 16, State: 1. 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server      initeventlog: Could not initiate the EventLog Service for the key '3677F6D3-17C7-4F', last error code is 2. 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server &

KB955706 failed to install on Microsoft SQL Server 2005

I downloaded and installed Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server 2005.  During the completion of the installation, there was a Hotfix.exe error that said "A recently applied update, KB955706, failed to install.  Also, a message pops up to reboot the computer.  Does this mean that the Service Pack 3 installation was unsuccessful?  How do I fix this?
