List permissions

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 19, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

For a list in my site, i need to set custom permissions based on the user loggin in. To set this, i select "List permissions" from the list tools ribbon, then i select "Stop inheriting permissions". This should allow me to create custom permission for the list, but when i add some user to the groups (members, visitors or owners), the changes i do here also affects the rest of the site, and vice versa what i modifiy outside this list permissions reflects on it.

Am i doing something wrong?

Customized list views and permissions to specific group users

Hi, I have created a custom list with 20 field/columns in wss3.0. I had four user groups(group1, group2,....3.....4) in my site collection with various levels of permissions. I have created four custom views (Group 1 view, Group2 view,...etc)in my list. Each view contains only certain fields out of 20. For example group 1 view contains field 1, 5, 7,10 and 13 of every item in my list.  My requirement is that when a user login, who is a member of group1. he should be able to view only Group1 view fields. He should not able to view other field/columns. I tried creating another field/column called as restricted users and wrote group names in that. In the View edit page I selected " show item when the column 'restricted users' is equl to [Me]. But I did not get it. Kindly help it out any one either programmatically or UI based. Thanks

List View Permissions and Views for Web Parts

My fellow developers and I are going in circles a bit with our new Sharepoint 2010.  This question probably has several different answers.   I have a list of grades and comments that our Team Leaders want to create and save on Sharepoint.  When saved, the user who was graded should be able to see their own grades.  Its a pretty simple requirement and I'm 90% of the way there.   I created a list with the required fields, and two separate views.  The first view filters the list by the user's name so they see on their grades.  The second view shows all grades in a grouped order by the person who assigned the grade.  To make this second view more readable, I added some formatting with Sharepoint Designer 2010.  It looks nice.   Here's where the speed bump occurs.  I create a web parts page for each view.  The page showing only the user grades works as expected.  The other page, however, shows the list in a view that I didn't create.  No matter what view I select from the "Edit Web Part" menu, it always shows this strange view.  If I select the list, it says its current view is "Default".  The second view I created is set as default, but its not the view I see.  If I change the current view from list menu to the second view specifically, it shows up correctly. &n

how to change the permissions list items using the workflow?

How to change the permissions list items using the workflow? Or how to instull SPDActivities on sharepoint 2010?

Item/Document permissions affect Library/List permissions

When I change the permissions on a item/document in a library/list the permissions are also changed on the library/list even though I stopped inheritance.  When I change the permissions on the library/list it also changes permissions on items/documents in that list even if inheritance is removed.

Help with Workflow Task List Permissions

Here's the scenario:  I have a workflow that is assigned (in parallel) to a series of people.  I've limited each person's permissions within the Workflor Task list to strictly edit by creating a custom permissions level.  So now workflow participants are able to Approve the workflow task, but cannot delete the item.  However, now, I wish to limit the tasks a user can approve to only the items that are assigned to them.    I assumed that the (Workflow Task List > List Settings > Advanced Settings >  Item Level Permissions > Edit access: Specify which items users can edit) set to 'Only their own' would do the trick, but that setting doesn't seem to impose any limitation on which task item a user can edit.    Oddly enough, when I set the (Read access:  Specify which items users can read) to 'Only their own' I loose access to every single item in the task list; even the ones that are assigned to me.  What gives?  I thought maybe SharePoint's interpretation of 'their own' possession was linked to who created the item instead of who it's assigned to, but these 2 behaviors don't seem to support that theory at all.    Is this a bug in SharePoint because I'm stumped.   Thanks! -Tracy

Item/Document vs. Libray/List permissions

When I change the permissions on a item/document in a library/list the permissions are also changed on the library/list even though I stopped inheritance.  When I change the permissions on the library/list it also changes permissions on items/documents in that list even if inheritance is removed.

How to properly configure permissions so users can view, add, edit, and delete list items, but not w

I am trying to figure out how to properly setup security so that it can be configured at the top-level, and then inherited all the way through. Here is what I would like to do: Each user can view, add, edit, and delete list items - but, users cannot modify or delete web part pages. The only way I know how to do this is set Contribute from the top-down, and then go into each Site Pages library and set Read access. The problem is that I have 100 sites, and I was hoping there was a way I could set security at the top, and inherit downward. Rather than having to go into all 100 Site Pages library and set Read access. Is there a way to do this? Thanks in advance.

Setting permissions to Items/Views in a list

I have a list containing 2 FY's data. I need to make one of the FY year's data as read-only. Can i create a view filtering only this data and make only this view as read-only or do i need to edit permissions of individual items of the filtered FY and set it as read-only. Is there any other way of doing this?

Can't export list to Excel - "You do not have adequate permissions..."

Hello, SP 2007 (, Office 2010, Win 7 Pro x64. When I try to export a list to Excel, I get this error: "You do not have adequate permissions to modify this list.  Changes to your data cannot be saved." This comes right after I am prompted to enable data connections, and the Import Data dialog. I get this error on two different computers; I have tried several browsers (IE8 32-bit, FireFox, Iron). How do I fix this problem?  Thanks.

Anyway to change permissions on a record in a list?

I think I know the answer to this, but need to ask.  Is there anyway, without doing custom development, to change the permissions on a record such that it no longer permits changes? In other words, change status field to "Done" and from then on no more changes.  We can only do WSS "out of the box" and SharePoint Designer.  No development or XML allowed.--rms www.rmschneider.com

When linking SP List to Access 2007 "You do not have permissions ..."

When I attempt to link a SP list to an existing Access db (which already has lists linked to the same SP Site), I get the error: "You do not have the necessary permissions to use the '[url given here]' object. Per the KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924739 it is because "list contains a column name that has more than 64 characters".  but this is not the case.  None of the column have such long names.  Any other ideas?

Perhaps there is a maximum number of columns in the SP list?  I have about 68 fields ... know this is a lot but it's sort of a questionnaire.

BCS Method Security / External Content Type Permissions / Custom List Security Provider / Security T

I have an external list setup with the usual CRUD methods.  The external SQL table is also being populated by another source.  I want to enable/disable deleting depending on whether the record was created from SharePoint.  I would also like the normal list permissions to work.  So if a user has permissions to delete on the list, they can only delete items created for SharePoint.

Where should this logic be incorporated?  On the BCS Delete method, somewhere in the External Content Type or on the list instance?  Most examples I find relate to security trimming for search.  I'm only concerned about the delete method.

I'm sure there are multiple ways to accomplish this.  Which is the best?

SPD 2010 status 'Canceled' when using action 'Replace List Item Permissions'

I have been experiencing issues with using action "Replace List Item Permissions" with SPD 2010.
When adding an new list item the workflow runs as expected.
When editing the same item later, the workflowstatus gets "Canceled" and the joblog tells me:

09/22/2010 15:55:14.41  w3wp.exe (0x3584) 0x37B4 SharePoint Foundation Workflow Infrastructure 72fv Unexpected AutoStart Workflow: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: Recursive workflows are not permitted. at Microsoft.SharePoint.Workflow.SPWorkflowAutostartEventReceiver.<>c__DisplayClass1.<AutoStartWorkflow>b__0(SPSite superUserSite, SPWeb superUserWeb)

The Workflow uses the options
- "Start workflow automatically when an item is created"
- "Start workflow automatically when an item is changed"
My environment is:
- MOSS 2010 Enterprise RTM english with german languagepacks
- SharePoint Designer 2010, Version 14.0.4760.1000

Any ideas why this error is occurring and how to resolve it?
Thanks, Stefan.

Able to access list despite no permissions for it

Hello guys,

Logged on as the ONLY Site Collection Administrator, I've created a document library and and given access only for the mentioned user.

Then, after logging on with an account that belongs to the Site Owner's group, correctly I'm unable to acess the content on that list.

On the other hand, logging on with the Administrator account, wich was the one used to create the site, but is no longer on the Site Collection Administrator, I'm able to acess the content on that list despite only havving the Actions menu and being unable to create or delete content on that list. What I really need is to get the "Access Denied" message I got when acessing with the Site Owner's group account.

What can I do?

Assign permissions on specific list types

Dear folks,

I am wondering if it is possible, with SharePoint 2010, to restrict the users permissions so that specific groups of users can only create lists/libraries from a specific template: currently, if a contributor clicks on the create button, he/she can create several types of libraries/lists (document library, form library, picture library, calendar, contacts, etc.); is it possible to restrict this range of choices so that I can have specific users be able to create only from specific list/library templates (e.g. a user that can create only document libraries but not pictures libraries, records libraries, etc.)?

Thanks a lot

Set permissions to avoid Delete item from List

Setting custom task list permissions

I am trying to use code to set permissions for a custom task created in Windows WF. I have been trying to use the following method to access a specific task in the task list and add a role to that task:

        public void setTaskPermissions(Guid taskGUID, string loginName)
            SPSite Site = new SPSite(ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["DefaultSourceURLStandard"]);

            SPWeb Web = Site.OpenWeb();

            //Get Role Definition from SPWeb

            SPRoleDefinition RoleDefinition = Web.RoleDefinitions.GetByType(SPRoleType.Contributor); //or whichever SPRoleType you choose

            //Get SPListItem

            SPList List = Web.Lists[ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["LeaversTaskListName"]]; //e.g., "Announcements"
            SPListItem ListItem = List.Items[taskGUID];

            //Create new Role Assignment
            //Add Role Definition to Role Assignment's Role Definition Bindings

            //add role specific to user
            SPRoleAssignment specificRole = new SPRoleAssignment(loginName,"","","");
