Question on using variations on an existing site

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 26, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I've been using MOSS 2007 for my company's CMS system for the last 2 years or so. Recently, the marketing department has asked us to include the option for multilingual support so naturally, I looked to using variations to accomplish this, however, the site was setup without variations since this was "definitely" not a requirement back when we setup the site.

My problem is when I enable variations, it seems to create new sites off of the root (e.g. English, Spanish, French), however,  it isn't copying anything from the Root site that already exists or any of it's subsites or pages. Is there any to keep my existing site content intact and still use variations, including all of the update features?

Thanks in advance

Is it. Is it really?

Web Site to Web Application Question

I've been building web sites and for my next project I will be creating a web application.  I use a 'BasePage' class in all my projects but, since web applications do not contain the 'App_Code' folder, what is the best place/practice for the 'BasePage' class?

MOSS Site with Basic Authentication and variations does not work on one node

Hi, We have one MOSS Farm with two nodes, on this we have several sites. For one specific site we have Basic Authentication and variations enabled in it, on one node site works fine. When we browse it pops-up for credentials and once credentials are provided it works fine and properly redirect to source variation home page. But on the other node when we browse the site it pops-up asking for credentials then after providing correct credentials it again asks for credentials twice and then it throws the following error : Access denied.   You do not have permission to perform this action or access this resource. And if we directly put the source site homepage url it throws following error: 401 UNAUTHORIZED We have checked the Alternate Access Mappings for the site and it is perfectly fine, if i enable windows authentication on the defected node the site works fine. This issue is just like pain in the neck still no resolution, please help us to resolve this issue. Regards, Jasjeet Singh

Site variations Releative url is not updated in other language sites

I have a site called “en-us” and I need to create 3+ variations of it for different countries. When I create the variation all relative links with in the content stay the same. For example /en-us/Products/.. does not change to: en-CH/products/… it stays the same. I was under the impression that variations would automatically update all relative links and URL’s within the site. Is that true? is there any other way to update the relative url. please let me know Any help and response would be greatly appreciated. muthu

Is it possible to configure an existing sub site as variation source label in 2010?

Hi, I am trying to configure variations on an existing site. For example, I already have a site collection and a sub site "en-us" that has all the content. Would it be possible to configure this existing "en-us" as my variation source site? If not possible, can anyone suggest me any work-around? This is very critical and hopefully there is a way to achieve this without having to move all the content from "en-us" to my top level site, create variation labels with different names, and then delete the content from top-level site. Please suggest. Thanks, Karthik

Another Simple Question - Adding a Picture to My Site

Hi, I'm trying to add a profile picture to my profile on SharePoint 2010 but under Edit my profile there isn't a option. I believe it should normally be under Basic Information. Is there a way to add this option?

How to associate STP file to an existing site in same farm.

single farm

there are 2 web-applications: web-app1, web-app2.

Each webapp has one site collection. that is

webapp1 has site-collect1

webapp2 has site-collect2

Now for some reason I want to copy site-collect2 to webapp1 as site-collect1.

content-db doesn't work because of database ID issue.

I am trying to use 'save as template' from site-collect2 and can get STP file but how do I assocaite this STP file to site-collect1. I am looking for any STSADM commands or source code that does this. Here also I wanted to create site-template with 'data' but it is giving me error. I will check this later.

thanks for reading.please suggest.

Site variations: limited to publising sites?

I have following requirements:

My SharePoint site collection must be multi-lingual (MOSS 2007 installation). So I thought: I fix this by using the site variations feature.

However, to enable this feature, I need to have a publishing site as top-level site. No problem for me. But apparantly, underneath a publishing site, only publishing subsites can be created. That is a problem for me. Because underneath my publishing top-level site I want to create a team site, a site base on one of the 40 fantastic templates and so on.

How can this be achieved?

SP2010 enable variations root site ERROR

SP2010\ Variations : As indicated under the Note, I am adding the root level to the site webaddress by adding slash (/) . then I got error FILE NOT FOUND. any advice! thanks

Adding .aspx page to existing web site

I have a running ASP.NET web site. There is following problem with one of the forms:

One part of submitted data is added to database after "submit" is clicked. (to "table1")

Another part is lost (not added to "table2", and no files uploaded)

I have no source code of that project.

So, because I cant edit existing page, I came to a decision to add new .aspx page to a running application with same functions as existing one.

How can I do that? Or maybe you can recommend some other solution.

Thanks, Alex.

Site Variations Navigation

Hi there!

I'm kind a newbie in Sharepoint. I'm having a problem with variations.

When i'am at a random page, like: http://../en-US/Pages/default.aspx and i click in my menu to another page, i should go to that page in the target variation like: http://../en-US/Pages/xxxx.aspx, but it goes to variation home as http://../Pages/xxxx.aspx.

Can anyone tell me why that happen? Why it doesn't assume the variation label?

SharePoint initial site hierarchy setup question

Hello, I thought this question would be a setup/configuration/operation question, any thoughts or advices will be greatly appreciated!!

So we would like to stand up couple of team sites (3-4 total) for these different programs, on our enterprise SharePoint environment which is MOSS 2007. Usually

what happens with our enterprise SP is that we request a SP site by filling out a form and they just give us a site collection with Site Owner level permissions.

What would be the reasons I would want to have all these sites under a Site collection named "Programs" and have each sites as sub-sites VS. have 4 different site

collections for each of the programs?

I understand it depends on the situation, and I thought it would be better if we would have separate site collections...please correct me if i'm wrong.

These programs are unrelated so there would be no need for a centralized navigation with a top-level page, no need for a search across all 4 program sites, and we

would actually like to have these in separate contentDBs to do backups. So I thought it would be best to just have these as separate site collections, and just

have like a link to different site collections in case users want to go to other program sites... I just couldn't think of any reasons to have

Extending an existing site definintion

Hi All,

I wanted to know if there is a way for me to extend an existing site definition instead of starting everything from scratch. I have an existing site definition that works well for our needs but i need to design a variant to this one which differs only slightly. So, instead of creating all the xml files, feature receivers etc.. i want to extend the existing one and make changes.

Import-SPWeb into non-existing site?

Trying out the Import/Export-SPWeb PowerShell CmdLets instead of stsadm -o export/import.

Export-SPWeb works great to export a site into a .cmp file, but when I try to import it using Import-SPWeb:

    Import-SPWeb -Identity http://myserver/nonexisting -Path d:\export\site.cmp

I'm getting an error message that it can't open the SPWeb. Non surprising since it doesn't exist - that's the whole point of an import.

With stsadm -o import I have no issues, it just creates the /nonexisting site with the proper template and everything.

Am I overlooking something, or is Import-SPWeb indeed inferior to the depreciated stsadm?
