How to get more information about the exceptions that can happen in SharePoint 2010 projects?

SharePoint 2007 + PowerPoint gives "Contacting the server for information" for a long time

I've never had this issue for but today all of a sudden I tried to open a PowerPoint document posted to a document library on our SharePoint 2007 site and it gave a message saying "Contacting the server for information" for a long time.  It eventually opened but not until after 5-10 minutes.  Does anyone know what might have caused this?  The file itself is pretty small, only 70KB, and as I said we haven't had this problem before.

Personnel information -web part in SharePoint 2010?

In SharePoint 2003 there was a web part which could display all the site users in it with contact details and other information.

In SharePoint 2010 this kind of web part doesn't seem to exist(or am I totally blind?)?
The Site users -web part only displays the username, which is not enough. I would like to display 100+ user profiles(name, phone, location, email, etc.) in a web part with paging.

Is there a web part to do this?
I could create a contact list and manually insert all the user information in there, but with 100+ user profiles it is quite a lot of work(plus if someone updates their info, it would have to be modified to the list as well...).

Error Message PowerPivot Excel on SharePoint : "Excel was unable to get necessary information about

Hello everybody:

I get the error message “Excel was unable to get necessary information about this cube. The cube might have been reorganized or changed on the server” when I open the excel on the sharePoint site and the PowerPivot Datasource is already refreshed successfully on schedule.

I describe my steps more clearly.

  • Step1. Create Excel pivot tables and charts by using PowerPivot datasource which connects to SQL Server.
  • Step2. Publish Excel to SharePoint site. The Analysis Server will build a PowerPivot cube in "VertiPaq" StorageEngineMode automatically and the cube name including an "uniqueindentifier" in the end.
  • Step3. Schedule PowerPivot refresh plan on SharePoint and the successful result comes out soon. After PowerPivot refreshed the "uniqueindentifier" will be changed to another one automatically.
  • Step4. When I open excel on the SharePoint I will get the error message again. If I click the "ok" then Excel will really Refresh.

Now I have tried two ways:

  1. Locale setting: Doesn't work. It seems not to be the cause of my problem because it won't happen if my excel's datasource is connecting to DB or Cube directly.

read and print sharepoint list information using javascript

i am working on a form right now, user's inputs will be stored in a sharepoint list. after user click submit, it will display a thankyou panel, and send a email to me showing user's input. on the thankyou panel, there is a button, if user click it, it will open a new window and display exactly the same thing in email, so that user can check if they input the right thing.

i did this part using javascript, the window.open method. and i wrote html code in it, using window.document.write method.

i wrote a read from sharepoint list function, i dont know if it is working, but my question is how can i call this function in javascript since it will be a client side programming.

my readfromlist code is here:

public void readFromList()
             SPSite oSiteCollection = SPContext.Current.Site;
             SPList oList = oSiteCollection.AllWebs["something"].Lists["somelist"];
             SPView oListView = oList.Views["All Items"];
             SPListItemCollection collectListItems = oList.GetItems(oListView);

             foreach (SPListItem oListItem in collectListItems)
                 txtFirstName.Text = SPEncode.HtmlEncode(oListItem["First Name"].ToString()) + "<BR>";

How to prepopulate information from sharepoint list to a web form

i was working on a registration form which requires user information and save it to the sharepoint list. i was wondering if im able to search on the list item according to user's login information, and prepopulate it if information is matched. i did the search part by using query, for example, the first name:

SPList IsExist;

   IsExist = SPContext.Current.Web.Lists["TTCVIP"];

   SPQuery query = new SPQuery();

   query.Query = buildQuery();//search for first name = loggin name

   SPListItemCollection found = IsExist.GetItems(query);

   //if yes, prepopulate the form

   if (found.Count > 0)

//if no, prepopulate user information from profile manager

i then want to pull the information out from the list and prepopulate to the form. after submit the form, there is button, so when user click submit, it will show the inforamtion he has input(also need to pull info from list), i did this part by using the following code:

public void readFromList()
       SPSite oSiteCollection = SPContext.Current.Site;
       SPList oList = oSiteCollection.AllWebs["/en/admin"].Lists["TTCVIP"];
       SPView oListView = oList.Views["All Items"];
       SPListItemCollection collectListItems = oList.GetItems(oListView);

       foreach (SPListItem oListItem

How to prepopulate information from sharepoint list to a web form

hi all,

i was wondering if there is a way to prepopulate sharepoint list item values into a webform fields if the loggin user's information is matched with the information in the list item.

what i have done is that i made a query function to determine if info is matched, and then i try to pull some infomation out from list item. this method works fine for printing these values to some labels on the form, however, it is not working for prepopulation, which happens in the page_load function.

here is my query code:

  1.   SPList IsExist;
  2.    IsExist = SPContext.Current.Web.Lists["TTCVIP"];
  4.    SPQuery query = new SPQuery();
  6.    query.Query = buildQuery();//search for first name = loggin name
  8.    SPListItemCollection

sharepoint 2010 user information list custom property

Inserting "Modified By" Information from SharePoint into Word 2007

In Word 2007 I'm able to include the Name and Date in which a user last saved a document by taking the following steps:

Click the Insert Tab -> Quick Parts -> Field, and then selecting LastSavedBy and SaveDate respectively.

My problem is that the LastSavedBy name displayed is in the form of their username (first initial, lastname). I need to have it displayed as it is in the Modified By column in SharePoint (full first name, last name).

My question is, how do I pull in the Modified By information from SharePoint into the Word document?

SharePoint server information in SQL script

Without accessing the WSS web front server - Central administration , Is there a sql script to find out the server name, port number in SSMS.  I am trying to query all my sharepoint content database (WSS 3.0) - where they reside and live.   Only have access in SSMS.

Unable to get AD profile information using InfoPath form in Sharepoint 2007 browser mode

I have followed the threads on this but haven't been able to resolve the issue with any of the suggestions provided.  I need to get the user's first and last name from their profile.  I created an InfoPath form using the "Get current user without writing code" blog directions I ran across here, using the standard userprofileservice.asmx service.  Everything works fine so long as I don't use the SharePoint browser option.  Then I get the error:

An error occurred accessing a data source.
An entry has been added to the Windows event log of the server.

Log ID:5566

I have attacked this from every angle I can think of:

IE, Design checker - OK, SSP account, my account have AD read access, no problems getting to the site collection, as stated before, runs fine if I don't use the browser option

Converted the connection to a udcx stored in the same site as the form library - tried both converted and unconverted connection - same problem, removed the connection altogether, everything works fine (but, of course, no profile info), works under InfoPath using either connection

Set form with Domain trust

Published it to a form library, also tried admin approved with full trust and signed - same problem

Ran locally on SharePoint server and remotely - same problem

ItemAdded Event not always returning SharePoint field information when InfoPath form submitted

 (SharePoint 2007)

I am struggling with an issue related to InfoPath and use of the ItemAdded event handler.  I have created an InfoPath form that contains several fields that are being published to SharePoint fields in a Forms Library.  When I submit a new form, the SharePoint data is being correctly updated.  ian see it in the list.  However, I am trying to write an ItemAdded event handler that performs specific logic based on the value of one of the InfoPath/SharePoint fields for the form being added to the library.  The logic appears to work correctly the first time through.  I can sucessfully read the value from the field and then execute my logic.  However, subsequent submissions appear to not be able to read the values.  It is like they don't exist or are null.  I am thinking that it has something to do with threading but I cannot find a work around for this problem.  The interesting thing is that the same exact logic works correctly when the ItemAdded event handler is tied to a standard Document Library.  Any word documents that are being added always read the values correctly.

Does anybody know what might be causing this or a possible way around this issue?

Changing the graphics on the home page of a SharePoint site

When you create a site in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services by using the default Team Site template, the home page includes two default graphics. A Windows SharePoint Services graphic appears in the body of the page, and a picture of a house in a circle appears near the site title. You can change these graphics to customize your site. Changing the smaller graphic requires a Windows SharePoint Services compatible Web page editor

Displaying SharePoint lists in Web Parts

When you create a built-in or custom list in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, Windows SharePoint Services creates a Web Part, a basic building block of a SharePoint site, to display that list. These Web Parts are called List View Web Parts. Windows SharePoint Services stores List View Web Parts in the site collection Web Part gallery. (The site collection Web Part gallery is the most central gallery of Web Parts for a work group. By default, the gallery name is the name of the site, such as "Our Team Site Web Part Gallery." )
