I just installed SQL Server 2008 Management studio Express on my Vista machine. i tried connecting to local machine using :.\sqlexpress, (local)\sqlexpress, or .\SQLExpress, MyPCNAME\SQLExpressnothing is working, getting this error:-----------------------------Cannot
connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS. A network-related or instance-specific
error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server
was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is
correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.

I need to find white spaces in my table. the table contains 35 columns, therefore, I cannot check with AND or OR operator something like this
SELECT * FROM MS_Exchange_IS WHERE (TMZDIFF != '' AND Timestamp != ''..........)
Also I don't want to use cursors as it will greatly hamper the performance of my application.
Please suggest any other option.
Any link or pointers would be helpful
Thanks in Advance,
I am unable to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition (x86) on my Windows 2008 (32 bit) virtual machine. It fails everytime with "Could not find the Database Engine startup handle." error.
I have a user getting some problem with connecting to local SQL Server 2008 default instance using windows authentication with a user which has sysadmin role and is owner of each existing database:

I've installed SQL Server Express with a named instance 'SQLSERVER2'. I was able to connect to it and reference it in the management studio. There was a problem though with Visual Studio 9 when running an ASP.NET web application that required connecting to the same instance. So, I went into the configuration manager to change the security level of the instance from network to local service. The change went through but could not restart the instance. That is what has created my next round of problems. I can't go in and change it back to network because the instance is permanently stopped. I cannot start it with the services manager. How can I fix this? Here is the connection log:2009-12-21 11:36:32.20 Server Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (RTM) - 10.0.1600.22 (Intel X86) Jul 9 2008 14:43:34 Copyright (c) 1988-2008 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition with Advanced Services on Windows NT 5.1 <X86> (Build 2600: Service Pack 3)

Is it possible to install a SQL Server 2008 without giving it an instance name? So that my dotnet applications' connection string won't need to change to "data source:dbServer\Instance;...", and still can use the "data source:dbServer;..."
Thanks for help.
I just removed one SQL Server 2008 instance from my Windows Server 2008.
The SQL Server is working, but however, I can't find the SQL Server Management Studio in that server.
Do I need to install extra SQL Server 2008 components or what?
Thanks for help.
I am using Windows Server 2003. I have installed SQL Server 2005 and SQL 2008 R2 version in the machine. The sql server 2008 R2 version has the instance name as SQL2008R2
I am trying to configure "Reporting services Configuration Manager" for the SQL 2008 r2. I gave the machine name and hit the Find button, I am not able to get the Report server instance name.
But when I gave the server name, i am able to browse to the folders page in the Internet explorer. so the server is available . I gave like this in the IE, and I am able to see the page:
In the eventvwr, I found the following errror "The Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10_50.SQL2008R2\Reporting Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config file failed to load. This error may occur if the XML is not valid. "
How to get the Report server instance name in the configuration manager.
Several MSDN articles points to the existence of a file by the name of "SQLServer2008R2_RTM_CU3_2261464_10_50_1734_x64"
However, I am unable to find the file and am in desperate need of it. We are unable to modify any of our SQL Server Agent Jobs due to the issue here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2315727/!!
Here's the link to the CU3 downloads: http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=2261464&kbln=en-us
It contains four x64 downloads. The one we need (named above) is not present in the list. This is extremely frustrating!
