We are currently trying to achieve moving our databases to a new sharepoint server on a new SQL named instance.
Server 1 : Web Front End and SQL is on the same machine (Not a stand-alone installation).
OS : Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
SQL : SQL Server 2008 RTM Enterprise (10.0.xxxx)
Server 2 : SQL Server
OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

We noticed in the article that the current and new SQL Server have to be on the same version of windows and SQL. We upgraded windows to R2 Enterprise and all still worked.
As soon as we upgraded SQL 2008 to R2 Enterprise, only central administration worked. We ran through the Sharepoint configuration wizard and it completed successfully, as soon as we disconnected from the farm and tried to reconnect to the farm, we received
the following error message:
System.NullReferenceException, Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
