Anything wrong with creating an Intranet/IIS web site as a subsite under Central Administration?

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 18, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
After installing WSS 3.0, we can set up a subsite under the Central Administration.  My question is: if we want to create an Intranet,
i.e. an IIS Web site/web application, is it okay to create this Intranet under the CentralAdministration?  It seemed to me it is not right
to create an Intranet under the Central Administration, but I don't know anything wrong.

Turning off Crawling the Central Administration site?

There are 2 places that "Search Visibility" can be set on WSS3 servers:

Central Administration > Site Settings > Search Visibility

What are the ramifications of "hiding" the Central Administration site from search?

New Document Library in a subsite is inheriting permissions from wrong site

I have a site collection (using the out-of-the-box Business Intelligence site template) called "BI Home". A couple weeks ago I created a bunch of subsites (Finance, Regulatory, Marketing, etc.) all using the BI site template, and then created a Document Library called "Reports" in each one of those subsites. Those are all working as expected. Yesterday I needed to create a new subsite (again, a BI site just off the root site collection) called "Operations". I created the subsite, and then created the "Reports" document library underneath it.  When I went to modify the permissions of the new document library (located here: /Operations/Reports), it said it was inheriting permissions from it's parent: "BI Home".  Why would this be?  Shouldn't the parent be "Operations" ?? All my other sites' "Reports" folders are inheriting permission from their respective parent, but any new sites I create seem to have this issue. Thanks in advance for any insight someone may provide! [SharePoint 2010 RTM on Win2k8R2 using SQL 2008R2 RTM on Win2k8R2]

Enabling SSL for the Central Administration Site

In MOSS 2007 I had our CA site configured for SSL. What procedure must be taken to do the same for 2010?

Site built off of Central Administration. How to I move it?

Our developer built a site off of the Central Admin page with the admin page located at: http://sp_server:8080/default.aspx and the main page of the site loacted at: http://sp_server:8080/Intranet/SitePages/Home.aspx. How do I disassociate the Central Admin page from the Main page, as well as change the port number to 80 for the main page? Thanks in advance. Tom

Creating custom site template from a site that has a subsite - issue

  1. We created a Report Center site (a subsite) inside our site and then saved the site as a custom site template (including content). When we create the site out of this template, the site does not include the Report Center subsite. Can someone explain why?
  2. The report center was created for Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and we had published those KPIs on the parent site. We were hoping the any site created with our custom site template would show the KPIs. But we see only the KPI web part on the new site (created from our custom site template) without any KPI data. The reason is obvious because the data was coming from the Report Center subsite that does not get created by our custom site template. How do we accomplish this task via a custom site template?

Getting unknown errors in central administration. Site backups always fail. OWSTimer Errors.

Originally we had a 1 server standalone MOSS2007 install. (All service packs applied)

Then we added another server to the farm to act as a web server.

We decided to take the web server offline. So that ideally we would be back to our 1 server standalone setup. All our sharepoint sites still work fine after we did this, but things on the central administration side are horribly broken.

1. The web server still appears in farm topology even though it is offline, no longer exists. It also appears as "Windows SharePoint Services Database".

2. Trying to go into "Servers in farm" under Operations causes an unknown error.

3. Trying to go into "Timer job status" under Operations causes an unknown error.

The error log displays the following each time I try to access "Servers in farm" or "Timer job status"

OWSTIMER.EXE (0x199C) The following error occured while trying to read the ConnectionString property.  Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Now before I try to do some serious reconfiguration I would like to backup my sites. If I use the "Perform a backup" feature in central administration, it tells me the backup job has been scheduled, but after waiting for hours it still hasn't started, and doesn't look l

Sharepoint 2010 Central Administration Web site on Windows 7 comes up empty

Using the information presented at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee554869.aspx (slightly modified to accommodate the fact that the SharePoint 2010 is today distributed in the form of an ISO file), I was able to finish all steps including all 10 steps of the configuration wizard. Dismissing the wizard should result with launching the browser showing the new SharePoint site - in my case however, that browser shows a completely empty page.

Similarly, selecting the SharePoint 2010 Central Administration entry from the Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products folder (on the list of all installed products) results with the browser started at URL http://nik-workstation:23789/ - which is also completely empty

Since UAC is disabled - it ought to be the database. I believe that before installing SP 2010, I had SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 November CTP (this is required by Azure AppFabric development) and I was hoping that the SP installer will find the database that fits the best.

What is the best way to handle this? What is causing the problem?

Build an Easy Maintenance Intranet Site: Using Office Docs, File System Object, and OLE Structured S

If you've ever needed to build an easy-to-maintain intranet site, here's a solution based on Microsoft Office documents. Many sites require constant updating of their HTML, but the use of Word documents can simplify the process. This article details the construction of a human resources site that exploits the File System Object (FSO), OLE Structured Storage, and ActiveX capabilities of Word documents. This allows the HR staff to copy their revised or newly created Word files to the site, dynamically generate a list of links to their files, and free IS from the constant recoding of HR updates into new HTML pages.

Trying to launch a .exe file on my local computer from intranet site.

I have been told I can launch a local program on my PC from my intranet site but it has to be done with Active X or vbscript and not javascript.  I found the following little sample html code that will launch notepad.  However, I cannot figure out how to put this in a button, etc., within my aspx or code behind to execute it.  Does anybody have any idea how to do this?  I have a lot of javascript code I am launching urls with and I have even tried using that but again, I have been told that to do it client side it needs to be vbscript or something like this.  Any ideas?

Published site - wrong links

we have published our sharepoint site outside domain.

Unfortunately big problems with links in document library appeared.

The url for outside users is "it.company.cz", the internal url is "sp001:55680".

When I open the page and select Shared Documents, the site is still it.company.cz. But when select any folder in document library the site url changes to sp001:55680.

Strange is that the mouseover url is correct but when I click it, it changes to internal url.

Mouseover url: http://it.compay.cz/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx?RootFolder=%2fShared%20Documents%2fProjects&FolderCTID=&View=%7bBEBFF1D2%2d5910%2d4A36%2dB049%2d971F95E752E7%7d

After click url: http://sp001:55680/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx?RootFolder=%2fShared%20Documents%2fProjects&FolderCTID=&View=%7bBEBFF1D2%2d5910%2d4A36%2dB049%2d971F95E752E7%7d

Programmatically creating a SharePoint Site based on user input

I am working on developing a “Create Website Wizard” for SharePoint 2007 that would do the following (I am simplifying a little for the sake of this post):

1.      Take user input as follows:

Product Code:

Category (I, II, III):

The category will be a choice field (radio buttons or a dropdown)

C# - Creating web client for automating user activity on a HTTPS site

I've been wracking my brain for a couple of weeks on this.  I need to create a web client (I don't want to use the webBrowser control because I need this to be as lightweight as possible) to log in to a secure web site, and then effectively click links and fill in fields to get the data that would normally be displayed in the web browser.  I'm then going to parse the data and perform other actions with it. I have been working with HttpWebRequest and HttpWebResponse and many permutations of suggestions I have found while Googling my issue, but I can't get rid of my problem:  Sometimes when I effictively click the ultimate link that I need to click to get to my data, I get what I am looking for.  However, MOST of the timel, I get a response page that tells me my connection timed out and that I need to log in again.  I have tried messing with cookies and such, but to no avail. I know it's good form to post my code, but it is so sloppy and screwed up right now from tweaking this and trying that, that I'd rather not take the approach of fixing what's there, rather I'd like to start with solid, clean code to begin with. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, ALo

ASP.net Web Site Administration tool unable to connect ro my SQL DB

Hi, I am new to VWD and i am trying to use the Provider Configuration in the ASP.net Web Site Administration tool to configure my Web site management data. When ever i select the "Select a single provider for all site management data" there is only one provider "AspNetSqlProvider". When i select "test" it give me the following error message: "Could not establish a connection to the database. If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider." I have the aspnet_regsql to create a DB, my IIS is already installed and enable but the VWD ASP.net Web Site Administration tool refuse to connect to my SQL DB.What may be the problem and how can i rectify it.Thanks

Can Web Services be blocked by Central administration ?

I am a Site Collection administrator. I am thinking of using Web Services (_vti_bin/Lists.asmx etc.,) and display some data regarding Lists, Permissions, SubSites on some pages. My question is whether accessing these web services at site level can be blocked by central administration or not. If they cannot be blocked, then I would like to go forward on what I have mentioned above. Can anyone please clarify. Thanks.
