Just cannot install WSS 3.0 with SP1 on Windows Server 2008 64 bit

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 17, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
I am hoping someone can help as I have literally wasted hours on this.

I have a 64 bit version of Windows Server 2008 being hosted on a VM under VMWare ESX 3.5

There is nothing else installed on it other than the basic O/S install and I have added IIS and MSMQ as features. Ther server is added to a domain, assigned an IP etc... I can install Visual Studio on there, SQL Server 2005 and 2008 without a problem as well and even connect to them remotely from another trusted domain.

Yet I just cannot install WSS 3.0 on there. I am using the SP1 version for 64 bit, I have checked and re-checked numerous times for the file from MSDN and looked in numerous blogs and postings but it just won't bloody work.

Everytime I run the installer it gets to the end and then throws this error in the Event Log:

The description for Event ID 5000 from source Microsoft Office 12. Either the component that raises this is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer

With the following data

I have tried everything from changing things in the registry to using secure RDP sessions and it just will not work no matter how hard I try.

Further to this the install actually drops all the SharePoint binaries

SQL Server 2008 R2 fails after Windows XP Pro SP3 install

We recently encountered an issue with SQL Server 2008 R2 failing to run after the upgrade from Windows XP Pro SP2 to SP3. This was tested and reproduced (with varying results) on more than one computer. Steps to reproduce this. On a Windows XP Pro machine with Service Pack 2 installed, install SQL Server 2008 R2. Next upgrade Windows to Service Pack 3. Now upon opening SSMS or trying to start the SQL server service you receive the following message: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem". In some instances reinstalling/repairing SQL Server 2008 R2 does fix the issue.  In other cases the installer crashes and you need to use msizap to clean it up before you can reinstall.  In other cases you do not receive any errors at all. After testing in multiple virtual machines it looks like the cleaner the Windows install the more likely you are to run into this issue.  On machines with most or all windows updates (prior to SP3) installed you do not necessarily even get the failure.  On machines with just Windows XP Pro SP2 installed with no additional updates you get the failure every time. Obviously the SQL Server 2008 R2 prerequisites are installed in all cases in order to be able to install SQL server to begin with. Any help with this would be appre

SQL*Server 2008 SP1 applied but still tries to download and install from Windows Update

I had previously posted this on the windows update forum and was advised here was more appropriate. I have installed SQL*Server Express 2008 on laptop with windows7 and appled the SP1 update. This shows as applied correctly when looking at programs/updates from control panel, update logs. The management console confirms version 10.1.2531 is running. Each time I use windows update  the service pack is listed as needing download / install - the same KB968369 is given as the reference. I have run this a couple of times but the update is shown as outstanding each time. Any ideas how to resolve this? Thanks Colin

Tried everything, cannot install SQL Server 2008 Developer on Windows 7 Professional

I have a legal, purchased copy of Windows 7 on my X86 computer. I have downloaded through my university a copy of SQL Server 2008 (through MSDNAA). I have tried every single post for four days to no avail to get this installed, and it is crucial for my SQL class (obviously).

Everything I do leads to ".NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installation failed. .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 must be installed."
To my understanding, .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is installed by default in Windows 7. This is confirmed by the lack of installer on Microsoft websites for Windows 7, the ability to install other software such as Google Chrome that requires .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, and the availability of .NET Framework 3.5.1 in the Windows Programs and Features.

I have tried installing SQL Server 2008 SP1, which installed successfully, as recommended by Microsoft and then running the setup program using the /PCUSource=c:\SP1 method to have it recognize the SP1, to no avail.

I made sure that all features of .NET Framework 3.5.1 were enabled in Windows Programs and Features.

Windows 7 is completely up to date.

I have tried installing Visual Studio 2008 (which successfully installed), but SQL Server would not install afterwards.

How To Install .NET Assembly Into GAC On Windows Server 2008

Hi there.

I have a .NET 2.0 assembly which has been used in many SharePoint projects, running on W2K3 boxes, which I'm having trouble installing on a W2K8 box. Normally, on a W2K3 box, I can get away with dragging the assembly into the C:\Windows\Assembly folder and it will be installed, no problem. However, I see that things are a bit different in W2K8!

If I try to drag the assembly into the GAC, I get an error message indicating that I can't do that. Ok, so I ran Windows Explorer with 'Run As Administrator', but that made no difference.

I looked for .Net Configuration in Control Panel, but that is not there.

As a last resort I did a 'dir gacutil.exe /a/s/p' in a command prompt, but that returned nothing. There is no Visual Studio installed on the W2K8 box, thus I assume that's the reason for no gacutil.exe.

So my questions is, what is the preferred method of installing an assembly into the GAC in W2K8? Has anyone else had the same problem?

Install fails wth SQL Server 2008 Enterprise on Windows Server 2008 R2

I have a new server onto which I have installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I have not been successful at installing SQL Server 2008 Enterprise on it. After many attempts, I continue to get the following error message:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installation has failed.
SQL Server 2008 setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed.

Some notes:

  • I got my copies of Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 Enterprise through my MSDN subscription.
  • Upon first installing WinServer2008 R2, I notice that the .NET Framework 3.5.1 is not installed and is not available as a feature to add through the Programs and Features control panel.
  • Upon first installing WinServer2008 R2, Server Manag

Will SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition install on Windows 7 64-bit Professional? OS not listed on re

I just purchased Windows 7 Professional  for installation on an Intel 64-bit laptop. I planned on purchasing SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition but noticed that Windows 7 Professional is missing on the requirements list.

I was hoping someone here could verify that SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition will install on the OS mentioned above.

Here's the requirements page I was viewing:

Can we install 32bit SQL Server 2008 R2 on a Windows 2008 R2 Server ?

We are going to test SQL Server 2008 R2 and get it installed on a Windows 2008 R2 Testing Server.  However, we are not able to access the database engine via a 32 Bit SQL Server 2005 Management Studio installed on Windows XP workstation.

We just guess that SQL Server 2008 R2 database must be installed as 64 Bit and attempt to remove / reinstall a 32 Bit version.  However, it seems that we don't have an option to choose whether 32 or 64 bit of SQL Server 2008 R2 will be installed.

Is our understanding correct ?   Your advice is sought.

On Day 4 of Trying To Install Sql Server Management Console 2008 on Windows 7

I had Sql Server 2005 installed and tried to get Sql Server Management Console Installed.  It looked like I needed to upgrade to Sql Server 2008 to do that, so I did.  Sql Server 2008 Sp2 actually. I had hoped it would come with the Management Console, but when it didn't I downloaded Management Console Express 2008, and tried to install it.  It said I needed to update my non-existent install of Visual Studio 2008.  I uninstalled it before installing Visual Studio 2010.  So, I found a program that would remove all traces of installed programs, ran it, rebooted, and tried again.  Still suggested I upgrade my non-existent Visual Studio 2008.  So, to make it happy I decided to install the minimal version of Visual Studio 2008, and then upgrade it.  It's not compatible with Windows 7.  Therefore, Management Console 2008 is incompatible with Windows 7.  Right?  Am I missing something?  I have searched the net for 4 days trying every suggestion, and every link posted to some version of management studio in hopes of finding something that would work, but so far, no luck.  I haven't even found anyone with the exact problem I have, which really worries me.

Can install SQL 2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2

I have a Windows 2008 Server Enterprise R2 and want to install SQL server 2k8 Enterprise. I enabled the .Net framework 3.5.1 on the server. I downloaded and installed SQL 2008 SP2. I run the setup support file. Now I run setup /PCUSource=C:\sql2k8SP2. However I still get the incompatibility message and the message that .Net Frameowrk 3.5 has not been install.

Any ideas?

Install SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise on Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit problem.

I am installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition 64bit to Windows Server 2008 R2 standard (64bit) on VMware Virtual Machine.

The OS version is 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601. Processor value shows "Interl(R) Xeon(R) CPU.

On the "Installation Rules" page, it shows the status of "64-bit processor" and "64-bit operating system" are  is "Not applicable". Click the link to see details, it shows "... rule is not applicable based on your system configuration or selections.".

I have checked the forums, and see someone asked the same question but the answer was to ignore it. The installation was completed, but I can see both 32bit and 64bit folders (\Program Files (x86) and \Program Files) have files installed on "Microsoft SQL Server". So, I don't know it is exatly 64bit or mixed with 32bit and 64bit.

Is there anything wrong on my server's setting?

When i am executing my code in localhost:someportnumber the automation is working fine and I could get expected result and when I am hosting in my inetmgr(Windows XP is my OS) it is also working fine.

But the problem is that when I am hosting in my production server(Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition) I am not able to perform automation and results in the following error.

Source: Microsoft Word

The code gets failed in the following line:

ApplicationClass wordApp = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.ApplicationClass();

Document wordDoc = wordApp.Documents.Add(ref oTemplate, ref oFalse, ref oMissing, ref oMissing); // Error in this line

I cannot able to proceed further. Can anybody please help me in solving this issue?

Thank you.
