Certificate and windows based authentication

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 16, 2010    Points: 0   Category :WCF

We have a WCF service hosted in IIS 7 which currently uses windows
authentication. However, as we on-board new customers which don’t have domain
account we want to use certificate authentication for our new customers without
affecting existing users.

I know we can handle this issue using different endpoints since WCF
allow to set binding and authentication for each endpoint. However, this
approach seems to have a problem on our current users since it requires to
generate a new proxy, which they don’t want it,  due to the change in the
configuration of the service to accommodate this change.

So I am wondering if there is any better way which doesn’t require our
existing clients to generate a new proxy and at the same time which can allow
us to use certificate and windows based authentication.

Is there any way we can handle this by just configurin

Forms based users being prompted for windows authentication login for My Sites photos in user lists

Here's an issue I didn't see coming for our forms based authentication users.

We have a web application extended to an external url to handle forms based authentication for users outside of our domain. Our setup looks like this...

Internal Users/Windows Authentication - moss.domain.com
External Users/Forms Based - mossext.domain.com
My Site for Internal Users - mysites.domain.com

When our forms based users are accessing user lists, or discussion pages that display user pictures, they are getting a windows authentication login for our internal users (mysites.domain.com) who have populated their my site with personal photo.

How do we fix this?

Windows Identity Foundation (Claims Based Authentication) for Reporting Services

I see that SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services now supports Claims Based Authentication in Sharepoint 2010, meaning that end users can authenticate with Sharepoint using Claims Based Authentication, and use the same security tokens to connect through to Reporting Services.

I assume that behind the scenes Sharepoint is using Windows Identity Foundation (WIF - formerly codenamed "Geneva") to handle the authentication, and passing this on to Reporting Services.

I'm keen to use Windows Identity Foundation to authenticate with Reporting Services without Sharepoint. We have an existing ASP.NET web application, and we'd like to call Reporting Services from that, passing on the Windows Identity Foundation credentials of the user logged into our web application.

I've done some work on setting up a custom security extension using Forms Authentication (based on the sample), but am not sure how to proceed from there.

Google/Bing hasn't been helpful. Can you please point me to some guidance on how to set up Windows Identity Foundation authentication for Reporting Services?<

Web Matrix + Windows Authentication

I'm curious if its possible to get windows auth working with asp.net webpages/webmatrix.

I've got it published to IIS with windows auth turned on and anonymous/forms/basic turned off.

I'm guessing the WebSecurity Helper probably won't work here but can you access User.Identity.Name etc?

Sorry for the newbie questions, I've only just started working with asp.net ^^,

How to create a virtual directory and get benefit of the IIS. Is there a workaround to accomplish this without the Windows Authentication for Windows 7 Home Premium Edition?

Using windows authentication to access SQL when using ASP.NET 4.0 via COM+

I am using SQL Server 2008 under windows authentication, front end is ASP.NET which uses COM+ to access database.

COM+ components are configured to run as domain user.

When looking through the logs (SQL Profiler), I can see the login name as the configured identity instead of windows indentity.

I have got Website running under "Intergrated Windows Authentication" and database is running locally on webserver.

Web configure contains entry for <identity impersonate="true"/>.

My connection string is

connectionString="data source=db01\test01;initial catalog=test; integrated security=SSPI;persist security info=False; Trusted_Connection=Yes"

Any ideas?

Windows Forms: Give Your .NET-based Application a Fast and Responsive UI with Multiple Threads

If your application performs any non-UI processing on the thread that controls the user interface, it may make the app seem slow and sluggish, frustrating users. But writing multithreaded apps for Windows has long been restricted to C++ developers. Now with the .NET Framework, you can take advantage of multiple threads in C# to control the flow of instructions in your programs and isolate the UI thread for a fast and snappy user interface. This article shows you how. Also, it discusses the pitfalls of multiple threads and presents a framework for safe concurrent thread execution.

WinInet: Enable HTTP Communication in Windows-Based Client Applications

The Internet provides the infrastructure for applications to communicate, and that can include non-UI communication between Win32-based applications. If you think beyond the standard browser usage of HTTP, you can use this protocol to retrieve information from Win32-based applications and save it to a Web server. After explaining how HTTP can be used in this way, this article shows how to use Microsoft SQL Server, ASP, IIS, WinInet, and Visual Basic to implement two examples. The first reports usage data-how often an application is used and by whom. The second monitors application errors and reports error details for use by helpdesk staff or engineers in the debugging process.

=User!UserID from windows authentication using table from another database

i'm using sql server 2005, sql server business intelligence development studio for my reports and deploy them in my wss3.0 site.

what i'm trying to do is i'm trying to restrict wich users can see specific data within a report.

now, the thing is. the report gets the data out of my DB1 database and my windows authenticated user are in the WSS_content database.

when i deploy my report in my wss3 site. it gets the user that is loged in. but of course it does not display any data because the tables are not in the same database.

require guideline for 'Role-based authentication/authorization'

In my asp.net website in VS-2005 with SQL-Server 2005 as db, I need to implement role-based Authentication/Authorization.

I am familiar to the practises used in role-based authentication..as I have previously worked on projects that used this method. However, my project lead used to design the database. Now I have an existing website where authentication has been set to anonymous by setting 'allow users="?"' in the authentication tags in web.config.

If I use the createUserWizard control and use the Membership.creatUser(.....) method in code behind will the asp.net security tables, like users, roles, userinrole etc get created on its own? Can anyone please give the proper steps on how to acheive this?
