VS2008 SP1 crash when opening XAML designer

Dear Sir,

I repeatedly encounter a hard crash each time I open a specific XAML file in the VS2008 designer (C# project). This repeats every time (frustrating). I use Windows 7 ultimate, VS2008 SP1 TFS (SP1 installed after TFS). Please find the attached entries from my Application event log below.

I understand that there is no SP2 yet and that there is some confusion with respect to the hot fixes in the forums. I would be happy if I could get a pointer to a relevant hotfix, since I cannot find anything that seems to fix my problem. It would also be interesting to know if/when a SP2 will be released, since there seems to be quite a few people out there with quite serious stability issues.

Yours sincerely,
G.

PS As for other threads on this forum: 1) Having the toolbox pane open does not fix my problem. 2) And the fix in KB963035 does not work for me although I (in addition to the problem described here) also get the "busy waiting for an internal operation" message a few times a day.

[VS2008] Designer's display problem

Hello, I created a solution with multi-project and i've recently added some resources files to lacalized my application and of course my XAML files too. I used the "How To:" http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/dd882554(v=VS.95).asp I inserted the class LocalizedString in one off my project that I use as library for common actions. But since, my designer is not loading properly because it can't find this class while I precised the good assembly and that the application is running properly with resources applied. It's then not handy to develop an HMI... If anybody has an idea about this trouble... Of course I tried dozens of times to clear the projects and regenerate without success. Thank you for your help !

Hosted Designer fails to load workflow xaml that has InArguments with default values (xaml saved by

I have hosted the designer in our app. Using the hosted designer, workflows are saved as xaml to a database. When an end user wishes to edit a workflow the xaml is downloaded to a file and loaded into the designer via the .xaml file. The user can also associate assemblies with the workflow and there is a mechanism which makes sure that these assemblies are loaded into the appdomain and available. The problem we are hitting occurs when the top level activity (Sequence) has InArgument with default value. I create a simple Sequence, add InArguments (type of Int32 and String)  and set some default values. I save the workflow xaml to the database and close down the designer. When I wish to edit the workflow and try to load I get the following errors Could not find member '{clr-namespace:}_e905.argument3'. Could not find member '{clr-namespace:}_e905.argument1'. suggesting that some assembly/namespace missing. Here is the xaml I try to load: <Activity mc:Ignorable="sap" x:Class="{x:Null}" this:_e905.argument3="99" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/netfx/2009/xaml/activities" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" xmlns:mva="clr-namespace:Microsoft.VisualBasic.Activities;assembly=System.Activities" xmlns:s="clr-namespace:System;assembly=mscorl

WPF Designer not displaying controls in the toolbox VS2008 Prof Edn running on Windows 7

My Version Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Version 9.0.30729.4462 QFE Microsoft .NET Framework Version 3.5 SP1 I have windows 7 home premium running on my machine I installed Visual C# 2008 Express Edn with SP1 first I got that running I then installed rest of the Express components including SQL. I then installed Visual Studio 2008 Prof Edn with .Net 3.5 SP1 I then installed .Net 4.0 I run two instance of  C# IDEs. The Pro End and the Express Edn. Both Express/Prof C# versions display controls in toolbox for Windows Forms correctly. I only have problems with controls in toolbox for WPF in VS 2008 Prof Edn. My Scenario : When I use Express Edition the design view of the WPF Designer, it displays the toolbox with controls populated for WPF that I can use. When I use Pro Edition the design view of the WPF Designer, it displays the toolbox with  NO controls visible for WPF  that I can use.  The toolbox has only  "general" tab with the words "not usable controls....". If I do a show all it does show controls but they are disabled/read only. When I look at the Tools -> Choose Toolbox Item , I get the tools dialog box. Inside the box within the WPF Components TAB all controls are not ticked/selected. If I tick the Button Control and select OK, the control does not appear on the toolbox. I have done reset Toolbox no change. I

Generated MainWindow.xaml crashes VS2010 when you open the designer

In my system which is running Windows 7 Enterprise X64 I have a problem viewing some XAML files. At least one of my project XAML files sometimes crashes VS2010 if I open it in the designer or try to view it with Internet Exlorer 8 or Windows Presentation Foundation host. It also happens if i try to display the MainWindow.xaml that is generated by VS 2010.

The contents of MainWindow.xaml are

<Window x:Class="WpfApplication1.MainWindow"
        xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
        xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
        Title="MainWindow" Height="350" Width="525">
    <Grid>

    </Grid>
</Window>

If I open the debugger when IE8 crashes, the failing stack frame is iefdm2.dll!03992071()

I assume it is some sort installatioin snafu or something but I would hate to have to re-install everything.

Can anybody suggest what the issue might be?

VS2008 WPF Xaml: Is there a path length limit when loading an assembly?

Hello,

It seems that there is a path lenght limit for VS2008 when loading XAML assemblies.

Using the Microsoft sample Southridge, if the project is stored on "C:\Projects\C# samples\Southridge_Labs\1.Southridge_Fundamentals\Start" the designer does not load the assemblies.

But if I copy my files the project to the root (C:\Southridge_Labs\1.Southridge_Fundamentals\Start) then it works fine.

Basically I have solved my problem, but I want to know if there is an EXPLICIT limit and I cannot find any information related.

Thanks for your help.

Designer does not remember my settings, for ex., I want to always load xaml into xaml (code) view, n

I am using VS 2010 Ultimate.  It is not remembering my setup when opening .xaml files.  It is very annonying.  I  am pretty sure VS remembers things like that.

I prefer to load my .xaml file to see the code only.  So I usually minimize the design tab.  However, I have to do this every time I open a .xaml file.

I am getting the feeling this setting is stored at the .sln level, which is even more annonying, it should be global setting for all VS sessions.

Any advice?

VS2008 SP1 + WPF XAML editor breaks IntelliSense (Bug)

Hallo.

The scenario is:
1) open just 3 primitive template based XAML files in XAML editor (without showing WPF designer even)
2) close two of opened xaml files
3) Check intelliSense - it wouldn't work untill you restart VS.

If you open 2 XAML files - it works fine, but 3 -XAML - is enought for VS2008SP1 to fall down.

My XAMLs are following:

XAML1:
<UserControl x:Class="AutoTrader.Quotes.CellLotsTemplateControl"

XAML WPF assembly not loading into designer

Win 7, VS 2008 SP1, .NET 3.5 Sp1

I have an error on my machine only, but has no complaints on other similar machines. I have a separate xaml file in my local assembly, so I make the declaration in my main XAML file :
...
xmlns:local="clr-namespace:MyAppName"
...

A local type xaml is used (in a grid) and is in the body of the main xaml file :
...
<local:PLTButtonPanel x:Name="BtnPanel" HorizontalAlignment="Left" VerticalAlignment="Top" .....MORE STUFF..../>
...

This error is displayed when trying to load the designer :
Error 1 Assembly 'MyAppName' was not found. Verify that you are not missing an assembly reference. Also, verify that your project and all referenced assemblies have been built. H:\usr\src\CS\MyAppName\MyAppName\MainFrameWindow.xaml 6
Error 2 The type 'local:PLTButtonPanel' was not found. Verify that you are not missing an assembly reference and that all referenced assemblies have been built. H:\usr\src\CS\MyAppName\MyAppName\MainFrameWindow.xaml 220

When I compile, the erros go away, the app runs fine, BUT the Designer never loads the UI into view. It has no problem on ther identically configured machines.

Any ideas what is not set properly ?

Why is the WPF/XAML Designer in VS2010 unable to resolve my StaticResource references?

I have a WPF 3.5 app that was rendering properly in both the VS2008 Designer and at runtime. Since upgrading to VS2010, the Designer is no longer able to resolve any of my StaticResource references. Everything still renders correctly at runtime.

VS2008 Workflow Designer is Very Slow

Yes, I realise that this is a known issue. And has been known since VS2005.

We, too, are experiencing very slow response in the WF designer, running VS2008. It happens on both XP and Vista. (We are using grunty computers, running Subversion, with a local repository, and ReSharper.)

Will increasing CPU power or RAM or HD speed have any impact?

While this has been acknowledged by Microsoft as a "known problem" it would help immensely if someone from Microsoft could say that it is under investigation and that one or more people have been assigned the job of sorting it out for a later (unspecified) release.

Otherwise the advantages of a DSL are outweighed by the pain during development, and what appears to be a good choice of tool may have to be put aside for an alternative approach that is more productive.

Any answers?

Is there a plan to support a custom activity type as a root document in xaml on VS workflow designer

Hi,

Referring to the post below. It seems that the current VS workflow designer only support "Activity" type as a root document. Is there a plan to support a custom activity type as a root document in xaml on next release of WF?

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wfprerelease/thread/25b6669e-7e51-4d47-812e-684bdc0db37e

Thanks.

Unable to view the XAML Designer -

Hi,

I really hope someone knows the answer to this.

I am currently unable to view any XAML/Designer windows in my VS2010 Ultimate. (64bit)

Steps to reproduce (well at least on my install)

1- Create New WPF Project/Solution

2- Double Click on the default MainWindow.xaml

3- Nothing happens!

I've been trying to figure this out for a few days and I am stumped.

I have uninstalled VS2010 and then reinstalled -

installed SP1 - tried the repair .NET 4 etc . . .

Any help on this would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Collapse XAML code in the designer

I'm using VS2010 Pro (SP1) on XP Pro SP3

Before I installed SP1 I could collapse XAML sections, this is very useful if you have some Ribbonbar XAML for example, you just have a comment saying what this section does and the collapsed code. It's not just useful it's a must really when you start doing some serious interface work on LOB systems.

I did notice in the SP1 release notes they fixed some issues with collapsing code blocks.

Any ideas how I can turn on the feature after SP1 is installed ?
