SQL 2005 Management Studio Timeout expired

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 15, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I get the message - "Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding" - when working with large tables in Management Studio.

I have tried changeing the following:

1) Selected Tools -> Options

2) Expanded the "Query Execution" node

3) Clicked on "SQL Server"

4) Set value for "Execution time-out"  to 0 and  various  numbers up to 1800

Also checked the following

1) In Object Explorer I right-clicked on the server and selected "Properties"

2) Selected the "Advanced" page

4) Set the value for "Query Wait" under "Parallelism"  to various values from the default of -1 up to 1800.

Why does this query timeout in an application but not in Management Studio?

I have a query that looks something like this:   SELECT TOP 1 * FROM Customers c (NOLOCK) WHERE Key = (mykey) AND NOT EXISTS (SELECT 0 FROM Invoices i (NOLOCK) WHERE i.key = c.key AND i.Date > GETDATE() )   When I run this inside an (ODBC) application, it times out.   When I run it within SSMS, it works fine.  That might make you think its an application problem, but the timeout only occurs for one specific customer ... even in the application, it works fine for all other key values.    Any idea where I can even start looking for a solution to this?  Thanks.

Can't connect to SQL 2005 Enterprise using Management Studio with Server Name (only (local) works

This is a test system, everything running locally & no domains. Win 2003 Ent. Server & SQL Server 2005 Enterprise. I can't log into SQL Server Management Studio using the server name & using either Windows Authentication or SQL login. If I change the name of the server in the drop-down list to "(local)", I connect just fine (both Windows & SQL security modes). Shared Memory, Named Pipes & TCP/IP enabled in both server & client. Remote connections allowed. I have IP adresses (both 127.0.0.1 & external IP) in my hosts file pointing to the server name. Does SQL require a DNS server? This wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that I can't install SQL 2005 SP3 due to authentication failure since there's no way to enter (local) as the server name. SQL tools (management studio, SP install) seem to see the SQL server running but won't authenticate the user through any means other than setting server name to (local). This is driving me crazy!!!

Management Studio 2008 expired?

Hi All,We use SQL Server 2005 and 2008 here at my workplace.  In the past, whenever we setup a new developer workstation we would install Visual Studio, then install Management Studio by downloading the SQL Server trial, and installing only the tools.  The tools (in the past) were setup so you could use them indefinitely, it was only the database engine itself that was time-limited.With SQL Server 2008 that has apparently changed--I tried to start Management Studio 2008 on my workstation today, and got an error stating that "evaluation period has expired."I'm assuming we built this workstation the same as all the previous ones we've built, but now that I'm thinking about it I'm wondering if possible Management Studio was installed along with Visual Studio... is that possible? At any rate, my question is--how do we properly install Management Studio so that it won't "expire"?  We don't need to install the database engine, we just want to install Management Studio.Thanks!  -Josh

SQL Server 2005 64bit Install - Missing Management Studio

Good Afternoon,

I just installed SQL Server 2005 64bit on a fresh system with no other applications loaded on running on the new server.

The only other component that was installed with the SS2K5 database services is SSIS. The base installation and the SP2 patch went on perfect.

I went looking for the Management Studio thru the Start menu options and it is NOT under the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 group. The only options under the SS2K5 group are "Configuration Tools" and "Docs and Tutorials".

Here are file names that I downloaded from the MS website and installed.

   SW CD SQL Svr Enterprise Edtn 2005 64Bit X64 English #1 x64 MLF.x11-57796 (which is a zipped)

   SQLServer2005SP2-KB921896-x64-ENU

There was also another zipped file that I tried to install but it seems to be a duplicate of the zipped file above:

SW CD SQL Svr Enterprise Edtn 2005 64Bit X64 English #2 x64 MLF.x11-57797

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks ALL!

Management Studio for SQL Server 2005 Standard

I'm new to SQL Server and am just getting started with it. I received a copy of SQL Server 2005 Standard edition from the Launch Party here in Ottawa and successfully installed it on my server yesterday. I've look around the Internet, as well as the DVD for SQL Server Management Studio, but I have been unable to find it. The only thing that I have been able to find the the Management Studio Express which targets SQL Server 2005 Express. Can someone direct me to the Management Studio that targets the Standard edition?

Thank you.

SQL Management Studio 2008 an SQL 2005

SQL Server Management Studio 2005 forgets password?

I have a strange problem, every month the Connect to Server dialog in SQL Server 2005 Mgmt Studio will forget my passwords to all the servers I connect (yes I do have the Remember Password checked) to.

Anyone have this problem?

There is no "reset" or password clearing function I'm aware of?

This is a pain in to keep re-entering them as they are 40+ cryptic characters long.  Doing  a Google and I see this problem appears to be pretty common:

SQL 2005 Management studio slow to respond

My company hosts a number of SQL 2005 servers and we run the SQL 2005 client tools from various locations also. We have noticed that some servers respond quickly when loading SQL 2005 management studio while others can be extremely slow, taking over a minute just to load up the console (even though the server is idle). After doing some investigating we made made the following discovery when monitoring a server (with some sysinternals tools) which was slow to load the Management studio.

First we ran filemon and filtered sqlwb.exe and found when loading up the management studio there were consistent 15 second pauses of no activity. Since there is a 15 second TCP/IP retry delay when a target cannot be reached, we loaded up tcpview and reopened management studio again. We found that the server was trying to connect to crl.microsoft.com on port 80! (this fails since the server is behind a firewall). After management studio fires up eventually click on connect and try to connect to a SQL server - same thing, and other 15sec pause while it tries to contact crl.microsoft.com! After navigating around a bit the software seems to give up and no more attemtps are made, but the same thing will happen again when management studio is closed and reopened again.

We thought we'd let it connect to crl.microsoft.com to see what happens, so we enabled the http proxy and click!! Inst
