T-SQL Debugger fails in SSMS 2008

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 15, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

We recently installed SSMS 2008 and a new instance of SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition on my development machine.  When we tried the new T-SQL debugger features, we were able to debug a simple "SELECT TOP 10 * FROM MyTable" query and step over the select statement.  However, since that first debugging session, the debugger now fails.

No mater what query we try to debug, SSMS flickers like it's entering debug mode, then flickers back to the normal view and the status bar says "Query completed with errors."  It doesn't matter how simple the query is, SSMS refuses to enter debug mode.  The Messages tab of the query window displays nothing, so we have no clue as to what error SSMS thinks it's getting.

We've checked all of the SQL Server Books Online documentation and tried everything there.  We are attempting to debug using user sa, firewall is completely disabled, telnetting to localhost on port 135 gets a connection for the SQL Server instance.  Our production SQL Server 2008 machine will debug fine using the local copy of SSMS 2008.  However, this development machine dies immediately upon trying to start the debugger.  I'm not even sure of a log file anywhere where SSMS might list the errors that it encounters while trying running.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Copy/paste broken in SSMS 2008 R2

After uninstalling an SSMS addin (from Red Gate), my copy/paste functionality in SSMS broke -- don't know if it's correlated.  As documented in the bug https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/126743/copy-paste-stop-working-in-sql-2005 it seems that paste is working fine, because it works when I copy from other programs.  When I paste from SSMS, though, I can't paste anywhere.  It's as though SSMS clears the clipboard and that's all she wrote. Anyone else seeing this problem? -matthew

The original thread is locked for some reason--but the cause of the bug had something to do with the "ssms tools pack" add-in, which, according to the comments in the connect item, will be fixed in an update of ssms tools: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlkjdatabaseengine/thread/f65737b7-fe4d-487b-aa41-ef437d100bc7 https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/556169/ssms-completely-locked-up-after-right-clicking-a-table

SQL Server 2008 R2 fails after Windows XP Pro SP3 install

We recently encountered an issue with SQL Server 2008 R2 failing to run after the upgrade from Windows XP Pro SP2 to SP3. This was tested and reproduced (with varying results) on more than one computer. Steps to reproduce this. On a Windows XP Pro machine with Service Pack 2 installed, install SQL Server 2008 R2. Next upgrade Windows to Service Pack 3. Now upon opening SSMS or trying to start the SQL server service you receive the following message: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem". In some instances reinstalling/repairing SQL Server 2008 R2 does fix the issue.  In other cases the installer crashes and you need to use msizap to clean it up before you can reinstall.  In other cases you do not receive any errors at all. After testing in multiple virtual machines it looks like the cleaner the Windows install the more likely you are to run into this issue.  On machines with most or all windows updates (prior to SP3) installed you do not necessarily even get the failure.  On machines with just Windows XP Pro SP2 installed with no additional updates you get the failure every time. Obviously the SQL Server 2008 R2 prerequisites are installed in all cases in order to be able to install SQL server to begin with. Any help with this would be appre

SQL Server Express 2008 Setup fails. Support Rule "Restart Computer" Failed

Hi, I have been trying to install SQL Server Express for most of the day now without any luck.  Whatever I do setup fails at the stage of Setup Support Rules, Rule "Restart Computer" - Failed.  Needles to say I have restarted (several times!) and I have tried downloading  and installing the "Advanced", "Tools" and "Basic" versions, all give the same error.  Trying a repair does the same.  I have been searching the net for an answer without success, any help would be MUCH appreciated. Further info: I am trying to install a stand-alone installation on to a single PC running under XP SP 3 with .NET 3.5 SP1 installed.  The PC did have some earler versions of SQL server installed but I (?hopefully?) removed all of these through Control Panel.  Before trying the first SQL install I installed Windows installer 4.5 and PowerShell 1.0 as per the Microsoft Instructions. Running SQL Server Configuration Manager results in an error (MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap in might not have been installed correctly).  A directory structure for SQL server exists in "Program Files".  Services MSC shows SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) as Automatic Statup (not running).  Trying to start this manually gives error 14001: "application configuration incorrect - re-install to fix" .......... Which is precisely what I'm trying to do.........:(

Connection to SQL server 2008 fails randomly

I'm sure a lot of you have seen this error: "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server" Normally I would assume that this would mean that there's a problem connecting to the SQL server, but currently I'm having a hard time figuring out what the problem is and how to fix it The problem only occours randomly, but mostly it is when I from the same computer calls the server several times for example like this: For i as integer = 0 to 500 OpenConnectionToSqlServer(Bla bla) ReadData() CloseConnection() next I always makes sure to close the connection again. The more often I connect to SQL server in a row, the higher is the percentage of errors I have created my code so that if the above error happens, the program will wait for a second, then try again (after 3rd try it will stop trying)   I have several times been monitoring the SQL server at the same time, but I can't seem to see anything from there :(

SSRS 2008 Export to PDF fails for large data with System.Exception: Parameter is not valid

Hi, We are working on Range Bar Chart using SSRS 2008. The report has huge data. It is properly displaying the data, but when we tried to export to pdf it is failing with the following exception. Exporting to excel works fine. Also if the report has small/medium data it is property exporting to PDF. It is failing only in case of huge data (we have custom page size of 28" X 14"). Of course the report has lot of expressions we used to customize the colors/text as per our requirements.   Server Error in '/Reports_SQLDEV2008' Application. Parameter is not valid. SSMS 2008 - Shows Service Status as Stopped Though Service is started

Hi, I have a SQL Server 2008 - Active/Passive Cluster. The issue I am facing here is that, when I do a Failover from Node A to Node B, All the Cluster Services come online and the SQL Services are running (checked using the SQL Configuration Manager and Services console). However when I open the management studio, The Service status Indicator shows a Red Block mark against the ServerName and the SQL Server Agent. When I try connecting to the server remotely from another server, the status is displayed correctly in the SSMS(i.e the green sign with the arrow) .  This issue happens when I locally login to the server and connect using ssms. I am an Admin on both the boxes and even the service account with which the services run also has admin privileges. Any pointers? Thanks,

SSMS 2008 & Activity Monitor's Processor Time graph is disabled

Hi,I just upgraded one of my SQL 2005 clusters to SQL 2008 with CU9.  Now, when I connect to it with SSMS, either from my workstation or directly on a cluster node, the % Processor Time graph in the Activity Monitor screen is disabled.  The other three graphs are fine.  If I connect to a different SQL 2008 server, the % Processor Graph is fine.  I don't see any errors in any app event log.  Has anyone else seen this behavior? Thanks!

Debugging a Windows Service (VS 2008 / .NET 3.5) Using Debugger.Launch()

Hi, Everybody! I wrote a Windows Service using VS 2008 (.NET 3.5).  I wish to debug it.  I am able to build it and install it successfully.  When I start the service, the Visual Studio Just-In-Time Debugger (VS JIT Debugger) appears displaying the following message: An unhandled exception ("Launch for user") occurred in <WindowsService> [3392] (or [2560] or [5180] or ...).  I select the following Possible Debuggers <WindowsService> - Microsoft Visual Studio: Visual Studio 2008 and click the Yes button.  This is followed immediately by the following dialog box: Caption: Microsoft Visual Studio, Message: There is no source code available for the current location.  Clicking the Show Disassembly button results in displaying the disassembly.  The call stack shows mscorlib.dll!System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Launch() + 0x6a bytes.  The exception apparently occurs in Debugger.Launch();.  If I choose to continue, I am able to debug the Windows Service, stopping at the specified break points.  Why does the VS JIT Debugger appear in the first place?  How can I use Debugger.Launch(); without the VS JIT Debugger appearing?  See code below... protected override void OnStart(string[] args) { try { Debugger.Launch(); var t = new Thread(Start); t.IsBackground = true

SSMS 2008 Activity Monitor Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server (SQL Server

I get the following error when running SQL Server SSMS 2008 (32-bit) on my (Windows 7 64-bit) workstation against our SQL Server 2005 (32-bit) development server running Windows Server 2003 (32-bit): TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ The Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server <my server\instance name>. Activity Monitor for this instance will be placed into a paused state. Use the context menu in the overview pane to resume the Activity Monitor. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Unable to find SQL Server process ID 2256 on server VTX-DEV-01 (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.ResourceMonitoring)   I can expand the panes and all display data except Overview and Data File I/O. This is true for all instances on that server. The SSMS 2005 Activity Monitor (also on my workstation) works fine when connected to that server. I checked for the registry setting to disable the performance counters on both my machine and the server, and it was not there. I started the Performance Counter DLL Host on my machine, but that made no difference. I can see all Processor counters on the server from my local Performance Monitor. I ran "lodctr /R" on both systems, but that didn't help. The only SQL counters I see on the server (from my workstation) are SQLServer:SSIS Pipeline and SQLServer:SSIS
