DirectX 8.0: Enhancing Real-Time Character Animation with Matrix Palette Skinning and Vertex Shaders

DirectX 8.0 allows the creation of smooth and realistic character movements that are more life-like than simple articulated structure animations. This is made possible by its improved support for vertex tweening and blended vertex deformations, also known as soft-skinning. After a brief history of the use of these techniques in DirectX, soft-skinning using the fixed function pipeline is discussed. This is followed by the use of matrix palettes from within vertex shaders to create a customized soft-skinning solution that takes advantage of the benefits of vertex shaders, such as hardware acceleration and custom lighting algorithms without the limitations of fixed-function solutions.

Character counter with Editor control?

Has anyone made this work?  I'm trying to implement a character counter that counts the total text and markup in the Content property of the Editor.  It's easy to do with a button control and feeding Editor.Content.Length to a label but that doesn't give the user a running count.

I tried several javascript character counters, including this one:

<script type="text/javascript">
      function pageLoad() {

      maxL = 255;
      var bName = navigator.appName;
      function taLimit(taObj) {
          if (taObj.value.length == maxL) return false;
          return true;

      function taCount(taObj, Cnt) {
          objCnt = createObject(Cnt);
          objVal = taObj.value;
          if (objVal.length > maxL) objVal = objVal.substring(0, maxL);
          if (objCnt) {
              if (bName == "Netscape") {
                  objCnt.textContent = maxL - objVal.length;
              else { objCnt.innerText = maxL - objVal.length; }
          return true;
      function createObject(objId) {
          if (document.getElementById) return document.getElementById(objId);
          else if (document.layers) return eval("document." + objId);
          else if (document.all) return eval("document.all." + objId

XML Task error message hexadecimal invalid character

I am developing a SSIS package to add data from an XML file to an existing SQL Server table.  I have completed several similar projects, but on this XML file I am getting the error from the Data Flow tab between the XML Task and Data Flow Task: Error: 0xC002F304 at XML Task, XML Task: An error occurred with the following error message: "'', hexadecimal value 0x15, is an invalid character. The Execution method succeeded, but the number of errors raised (2) reached the maximum allowed (1); resulting in failure. This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix the errors. SSIS package "zStu_TS_Element.dtsx" finished: Failure. Do you know how I can fix this? This is the line it is referring to: <z:row c0='12' c1='80' c2='2006-04-17' c3='539' c4='1M2083N4N5N6N75800901110 11 '/>

Sigh! Vista still has 260 character Path limitation!

I recently discovered, the hard way, that Microsoft Vista still has a limit of a maximum 260 characters for the Path.   You can enter all the characters you probably want in [Control Panel | System | Advanced System Settings | Environment Variables | Path] but when you subsequently execute "Path" in a Windows Command Processor Console, you will see your result gets truncated at 260.   Worse, one day you will try to execute a command and it just won't happen,.and you may have one heck of a time figuring out why it failed.  Even worse, some sotware you run may try to execute an external dependency, under the reasonable assumption that it can be found in your path.  You're likely to have an even more difficult time diagnosing that! How do you get a path longer than 260 characters?  Some forum trolls maintain that it's a ridiculous question and could only happen to a brain-dead Windows wimp.  Not me.  I'm senior software architect and engineer, and I try things out.  I'm always learning new technologies and experimenting with new tools.  You give me a shiny new machine with all the memory and processor you think is state of the art and I will soon have it filled up with developer goodies.  Now, if you, like me, start installing frameworks, language systems, editors, database systems, utilities, an

SSIS And Sybase Source OLEDB connectivity issue with code page for character set

Hi I am using SSIS 2008 to connect the Sybase Server version 15.0.3 64-bit. The default character set id used by this Sybase server is 4 (i.e. roman8). (http://manuals.sybase.com/onlinebooks/group-charc/chg0300e/charsets/@Generic__BookTextView/1706;pt=266) I had installed Sybase Client for Sybase OLEDB Driver (ASEOLEDB) to integrate this in OLEDB Source Editor. As per guidance from one of the past MSDN forum discussion, I tried setting property of AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage property to "FALSE"  (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/sqlintegrationservices/thread/f5af9328-e1fb-48d7-a85d-1d08bb7cf0e5/). However, I am still experiencing error message as follows:- ********************************************************* Error at Package2 [Connection manager "xxxxxx.xxxxxxx"]: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR.  An OLE DB error has occurred. How to read Hex 00 character in SSIS

hello there   i have a large text file which i need to import into sql server. i have been able to map the fields and load the data. it is a fixed width file. the process works. however during testing i found that there are some character which are not visible in notepad. on a hex editor they show the value of 00 - null. in the file . the ssis package reads till the column it finds null and then considers it as a carriage return and moves to the next line.   please suggest how i can resolve this issue. i wrote a vbscript where i could open the file and save it again using notepad, it works for small files. but my input file is around 2 gb.   thanks prasanna

Trim a string

Hi, The result of this line document.getElementById('listName').innerText = args.get_fileName(); is filename.csv... How do I trim the .csv off the end?

XmlWriter.WriteRaw - hexadecimal value 0x1F, is an invalid character.

Using VS 2008, .Net 3.5, C#. In creating an XML string, I need to embed some non-printing ASCII characters such as 0x1C, 0x1D, 0x1E and 0x1F. However, when writing them using the WriteRaw function, I get the error message "hexadecimal value 0x1F, is an invalid character". In checking XML specifications, all the characters I am using are valid in XML. The xml declaration in the string is "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?>" Thanks in advance for any guidance.
