Compatibility problem: an "sql server 2008 R2" db backup cannot be restored to an "sql server 2008"

To verify if the "2008 R2" version can be restored back to a "2008" dbserver I make an experiment:  construct a database on R2 version ( version : 10.50.xxx )  and backup it; then I try to restore the db backup to a "sql server 2008" db-server ( version : 10.0.xxx ) but get failed. Error message is as shown: The database was backed up on a server running version 10.50.1600. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running version 10.00.2531. Either restore the database on a server that supports the backup, or use a backup that is compatible with this server.   Originally I want to upgrade a "2008" server to "2008 r2" , but this problem withdraws me: if I do so , I am afraid all the existing clientuser's dbs cannot be backed up to themselves if they don't have "2008 r2" locally:   if a database is backed up under "2008 r2" environment whereas client user only has "2008" db server, does it mean he cannot restore it anymore?   So I wonder if there is an approach that helps me to create a "backward-compatible" database; when creating database on wizard there is an option to choose "compatibility level" but I don't think it meets my requirement..    Anyone can help me on this ??

Backup SQL Server 2008 R2 Restore on SQL 2008

I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 instance that I need to backup and restore onto a SQL 2008 instance. When I attempt to restore the back up (.bak) database from the R2 SQL server onto the SQL 2008 server I get the following message: The database was backed up on a server running version 10.50.1600. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running version 10.00.2531. Either restore the database on a server that supports the backup, or use a backup that is compatible with this server. SQL server 2008 compact editioin + Entity Framework: Can we backup the SQL server compact edition da

our application uses the SQL server 2008 compact edition and entity framework. The application will control the instrument. It may run for several days before it stops. In order to protect the database crash (database failure), we plan to backup SQL compact database during running. Can we backup or duplicate the ~.sdf when application is running? Is there any SQL server command we can call inside the application to achive the backup? Or we only can backup the database when application is not running. thx!

Distributed transaction using linked server not working in SQL Server 2008 64 bit

Hi. I have had an issue trying to get distributed transactions to work in SQL Server 2008 using a linked server. The error message I get is

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "pod1" returned message "No transaction is active.".
Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 3
The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "pod1" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

My Environment:

Windows Server 2008 Enterprise 64 bit, SQL Server 2008 Enterprise 64 bit

Problem occurs with multiple different builds of SQL Server 2008 - I have been able to reproduce the problem with 10.0.1600.0, 10.0.1779.0 (CU 2), as well as 10.0.2531 (SP1)

I am aware that other people have had this issue and have reviewed all existing posts. I have verified that the MSDTC is configured correctly on both machines. I have also used DTCTester to verify that DTC is working correctly on all machines in question. None of the mentioned resolutions has solved this problem for me.

I am not seeing this problem occur on my 32 bit test machines - it is only occurring if at least one of the two machines is 64 bit.

Transaction Problems In SQL Server 2008 R2

Hello Forum.

Recently I've been involved in an upgrade project migrating databases from 2000 into 2005; the database then replicates to another company into a 2008 Database.  The processes involved extract data from an Oracle database into the 2005 Database and then transferring the data to the 2008 Database.  a Stored procedeure is then fired on both Servers to integrate the extracted/migrated data into the existing data.

The problem is that now we are getting duplicate data in the 2008 database; essentially the Stored Procedure is supposed to delete existing data if it has been migrated and then replace it with the existing data but it appears as though this isn't happening.  Is anybody aware of any issues surrounding 2008 R2 that could explain this?

Please click "Mark As Answer" if my post helped. Tony C.

Backup Log MyDB with no_log no logner supported for SQL Server 2008?

With SQL Server 2000, I can use following T-SQL to clean log:

Backup Log MyDB with truncate_only

ackup Log MyDB with no_log

but when I use it for SQL Server 2008, I got following error:

Msg 3032, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
One or more of the options (no_log) are not supported for this statement. Review the documentation for supported options.

Msg 155, Level 15, State 1, Line 2
'truncate_only' is not a recognized BACKUP option.

so how to resolve this problem?

Will full or differential backup break LSN chain if compatibility level = 80 in SQL Server 2005/2008

My understanding is that full or differential backup will not break LSN chain starting in SQL Server 2005.  However, I'm not sure whether this applies to databases with compatibility level 80 in SQL Server 2005/2008 or not.
