Adding server to a farm

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 14, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Good day,

I want to add a new server to my existing MOSS 2007 farm. I've followed some of the articles on how to do it. Installed it as complete. When the wizard started I gave the remote server (Sql2005). Now curiously, it came back with 3 databases that seemed random. This is test environment so the db I chose was WSS_Content_Test, wich is what the current wss runs on. After picking that db the domain account was filed in the account field. The account is a domain account called xxxxSharePoint. I used this account to installed the whole thing, it is an administrator account that has also db admin rights including db create, db read, etc.

So when the wizard started I gave it the database, this domain account and password, selected the option not to install the central admin page. Then the wizard continued to perform 10 steps only to fail on the 2nd with a message of denied access. The logs on both  servers revealed that another domain account is trying to access the database and its credentials weren't adequate. I don't where this other acc

Scaling Single Server Farm by adding a seperate Database server

Hi, Right now, I am having a sinle server farm SharePoint 2010 installation. Now I need to seperate out the SQL server from the same box and want to move it to the new SQL server. In short , I need to have a seperate SQL server in my current farm (which is single server farm installtion). Can some one point me to the steps for the same ? Thanks.

Adding an SP 2010 server to an existing farm. "Failed to connect to the configuration database." dur

I have an existing sp 2010 enterprise server hosting websites and central administration.  I have a seperate sql 2008 r2 server holding the databases.  My goal is to setup another sp 2010 enterprise server to provide redundancy for the websites and central admin.  I believe I am able to accomplish this by adding another web front end to the farm.  On the second server, I install sp 2010, run the config wizard and connect to the config database located on the sql server, however, I am interrupted at step 3 when I am notified of the following:

Failed to connect to the configuration database.
An exception of type System.InvalidOperationException was thrown.  Additional exception information: There was an error encrypting or decrypting credentials. Either a credential update is currently being performed, or you must update the farm account credentials on this server before you can perform this task.

dynamically adding sql server columns based on number of files in fileuploader

I want to create a new table to sql database at runtime.  The column names would be "Name", "Date", "Event".  I would also like to have one more column name "Image" but the problem is that since the amount of images will vary, I want the application to count the amount of files in the Multiple fileuploader and then add a image column to the table for the respected amount of files.

For example if i am uploading 3 files in the multiple fileuploader, the names should be "Name", "Date", "Event", "Image1", "image2", Image3"

I also would like that table name to be name dynamically from the textbox Name when the user enters the information.

I have the following code to make a new table, but I dont know how to name the fields at runtime like previously asked please help!!!

Dim objConn As New SqlConnection("Server=<servername>;uid=<userid>;pwd=<password>;database=master")

Sharepoint farm lost a server... How to proceed?

Had a Sharepoint farm I inherited that was running on ____ hardware in a ____ setup- raid controller failed, and the rack was setup so that I have to down 15 servers that might not come back up, just to get at the server... Complete, unrecoverable failure. This server was a member of our Sharepoint 2007 farm, and had Reporting Services on it. There are a lot of little pieces that are still referenced in the Central Configuration. I removed the server forcibly, and need to know next steps, specifically:

1. I tried to move Reporting Services to another server, but I get an error in the Grant Database privileges that I cannot connect to the Report Server's WMI Provider. I created a SPN on a DC, forced a replication a few hours ago, and still no luck. Any Advice?

2. How do I fix all the little things that reference that server? Anytime Sharepoint initiates a web page to Central Administration, it tries to use that server address.

I think the failed server was running SQL 2008 or SQL 2008 R2, and the server I am moving this to is SQL 2005 SP2. I have installed the correct Reporting Services for Sharepoint. Have I missed something?

Time is of the essence because management relies on Reporting Services and I am under a great deal of pressure to fix this. I appreciate any help I can get.

Problem adding .NET 3.5.1 feature on Server 2008 R2

Having an issue with a 2008 R2 64-bit Server becoming unresponsive/locking up when trying to activate the .NET 3.5.1 feature.  Did not have any previous version of .NET installed but ran the .NET Cleanup utility and completed successfully but still have same issue.  It installed .NET 4 via the Microsoft Updates OK but still hangs part way through the 3.5.1 install via the Server Manager/Add Features.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

The URL 'ao/AO Document/Admin Guideline/xxxxx.jpg' error on 2nd SharePoint server in farm

We just added a 2nd SP2007 server to mirror our site.  The original site is in China, the new site in the US.  They are connected via a permanent  site to site VPN.  We are hitting the errors when attempting to upload files to the US mirror.    Environment: US server site: OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) APP: Windows Sharepoint Server 2007 Enterprise SP2 (64 bit) DB: Windows SQL Server 2008 Enterprise R2 (64 bit) China site: OS: Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2 (32 bit) APP: Windows Sharepoint Server 2007 Enterprise SP2 (32 bit) DB: Windows SQL Server 2008 Enterprise R2 (32 bit) Background: We setup two test Sharepoint farm to be syncronized with only its content database. The upload works good on SZ site. But we got the following 2 error messages randomly when uploading file to document library of SF side. Error message: 1. The URL 'ao/AO Document/Admin Guideline/xxxxx.jpg' is invalid.  It may refer to a nonexistent file or folder, or refer to a valid file or folder that is not in the current Web. 2. Cannot open file "ao/AO Document/Admin Guideline/xxxxx.jpg". -- We've tried the official hotfix, altering the schema, changing the IIS memory limit settings, and restarting the application pool. Could the issue be related to the different OSes 2008 vs 2003, or 32 vs 64bit?

Failed to change Farm Account in Sharepoint 2010 server, now Central Administration is not accessibl

Hello, I have a problem, that I no longer can access Central Administration Website, only the Sharepoint itself. I was running installation of Sharepoint 2010 Server with administrative account ImTheAdmin, who is a Domain Admin in the domain on one of the Windows 2008 R2 member servers. Besides that, I made ImTheAdmin the primary administrator of the Sharepoint. ImTheAdmin became the only user of this Sharepoint 2010 server after installation.  I installed everything on one box with default installation settings. I used builtin SQL server, not Standard or Enterprise. What then happened is: Using ImTheAdmin account, I opened Central Administration Website, and it said, that I need to change the Farm Account, for the account for Farm was the default one (I think it was network service). So I created a regular domain user MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccount. The account name was too long to be as a Windows 2000 name, so it showed there without last 't', e.g. MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccoun. I thought, Windows 2000 is long gone, so I didn't pay much attention, I think everywhere the account SID is important. I don't know if that is the real problem with my failure later, but it might be one of the reasons. I put MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccount down in to the form of Central Administration Website, added the check mark, that it would react to password changes, and pre

Adding second node to SQL Server cluster fails.

I have successfully created a MSCS cluster and I have the SQL cluster up and running on the first node.   When I put the install cd in the second node and go through the install it fails with the error SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:  Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I'm assuming I get this error because on the cluster node configuration screen the "cluster network name" box is blank.   It won't let me select a name or type a name. The SQL cluster is up and running on the first node.   I can ping the sql cluster network name from both boxes.   The setup shows the installed node and the node I"m trying to add, so I don't see any problem. I have Windows 2008 R2 on both nodes and I'm installing SQL Server 2008 R2.   Any idea how I can get past this error?    Thank you.

Cannot Add Second FE Server to SharePoint 2010 Farm

Hi folks Well I thought I would add my problem to the others that are also experiencing this issue. I actually reported somthing similar to this forum in Feb 2010 when I was trying the beta version out. I upgraded our WSS farm to SPFS 2010, the upgrade worked, well kinda. Basically our second WFE server would not join the farm after installing the 2010 binaries and runnng the configuration tool and it was complaining with the following error: 07/31/2010 14:35:59  11  INF                              Calling SPFarm.Local and SPServer.Local to get the local farm objects 07/31/2010 14:35:59  11  INF                              SPFarm.Local returned null.  This usually means that the server is not joined.  But, you can delete a server from the configdb without unjoining, which would mean that this machine still thinks it is joined. 07/31/2010 14:35:59  11  INF                              Trying to access th

Same server farm administrator domain account for both Intranet and Internet Sharepoint site?

Hello,   We are planning to setup 2 streams of architecture for both Intranet and Internet web sites. Just wondering whether there is any best practices/security concerns if we are using the same domain account as the Server Farm Administrator for both Intranet and Internet platform?   Thanks,

Server Farm and machine.config machineKey value mismatch

Does the "F5 experience" work with a multi-server 2010 farm?

I have a multi-server SharePoint 2010 farm I'm attempting to develop against.  I have Visual Studio 2010 installed on one of the servers.  When I create a default Visual Web Part project and hit F5, I get an error such as the following:   "Error 1 Error occurred in deployment step 'Activate Features': Feature with Id '06789185-b4a0-41d8-a535-1d8602a05b97' is not installed in this farm, and cannot be added to this scope."   After a bit of searching, I came across a thread that suggested multi-server farms were not supported by Visual Studio 2010 in regards to the F5 experience of being able to deploy, activate, and debug a feature.  Can anyone shed light on this for me?Chris Stewart

Profile Synchronization on a Single-Server Farm

Profile synchronization is documented to not work on a stand-alone SharePoint 2010 installation, but is it supposed to work on a single-server farm?  Profile import works fine in our single-server SharePoint 2007 farms.  The SharePoint administrator here is telling me that we need to add another server to our SharePoint 2010 single-server farm to get profile synch to work.  That does not make sense to me.  A farm should be able to run all the service applications on 1 server (which is the normal configuration in an evaluation environment).  Jeff B

SharePoint 2010 - The license state for the current server doesn't match the farm's license state.

I already have a SharePoint 2010 server built, up and running. Yesterday I built a brand new server Windows 2008 and installed all necessary windows updates. Then I joined the server to the domain where the other SharePoint 2010 box is. Today, I installed all necessary pre-requisites for SharePoint 2010 including the KB971831. After that I installed SharePoint 2010 binaries on the new server. When I run the configuration wizard now, it sees the database server with the configuration database, but will not allow me to join the new server to the farm. I get the following error in the diagnostic logs. Resource retrieved id ConfigurationDatabaseTaskConnectFailConfigDisplayLabel is Failed to connect to the configuration database. 02/18/2010 17:54:12 8 INF Leaving function StringResourceManager.GetResourceString 02/18/2010 17:54:12 8 ERR Failed to connect to the configuration database.   An exception of type System.InvalidOperationException was thrown. Error 15401 when adding AD logins in upper case to a sql 2008 server

We are repeatedly getting Error 15401 when adding couple AD logins in upper case(DOMAIN_NM\USR_NM) to a sql 2008 server with the latin1_general, binary sort collation.  Lower case (DOMAIN_NM\usr_nm) works fine.  All the other servers, even the ones with the same collation, it is the opposite, upper case works and not the lower case.  Looked for duplicate SIDs in the domain, on the sql server, did not find any.  Any idea what's going on?.

Adding a linked server with alias

I have to add a linked server now with an alias and with NT authentication. I got below code from a blog - I have few questions here, In general tab, Is that sql_server mandatory or can we give any other name? How about Provider string and Catalog information? How about NT authentication, where can we mention it. Please help..There are no problems to add SQL linked server to the specific host running it. But what if you need to give it an alias, rather than use hostname as linked server name? Here is how to do it:1) Step 1:. In SQL Server Management Studio open Linked Servers and then 'New Linked Server'.. Inside of appeared wizard - Select the General tab.. Specify alias name in "Linked server" field.. Select SQL Native Client as provider.. Add sql_server in "Product Name" field (that's the magic).. In "Data Source" - specify name of the host to be used as linked server.2) Step 2:. In Security tab - specify proper security options (e.g. security context)3) Step 3:. In Server Options tab - put "Data Access", RPC, "Rpc Out" and "Use Remote Collaboration" to be true.4) Step 4:. Enjoy.
