Design view displays blank page

I'm relatively new to VWD and am using the Express version.  My web site is simple with a few connections to SQL Server data and to XML documents just to populate controls to display data.  After adding a new web page, linking its controls to an XML document and running it successfully, I discovered that I can no longer display the page in the Design view, I just get a blank screen.  To further confuse things I opened my root master page, which appears just fine.  I then opened the master page derived from this root master and it shows me content placeholders but not the controls inside the content placeholders.  If I have one of the master pages open in VWD and then I open the base page, I now see the data from the root master page but nothing from the base page or the derived master page. I think I'm doing something basically wrong but I don't see it.  Before I start deconstructing my web site I'm hoping someone can help me.  I have looked at a lot of posts on this site but I don't see one that answers my problem.  I did see the one about style and links and their ordering in the aspx file, but this isn't my problem as I currently have neither of these in use. TIA Jon

I need guidance on a program that displays system information

I have been asked by my university's IT division to write a program that displays specific information about the computer that the program is running on, such as the OS version, IP address, domain name, chipset, any device drivers that are installed, and any software that is installed. I'm allowed to use whatever language I want, but since I only know Java and VB.Net, I would like to use one of them. I've been doing Google searches for two weeks trying to find any information on a built-in class that would do this, in either language, but thus far, I've been unable to find anything that fits what I'm looking for. What I'm hoping for from this is for someone to tell me about a class that displays this kind of information, or failing that, how I would go about building my own. Be as general as you feel you need to be; this is a class assignment, and I'm hoping to learn something from this. Thank you for your time.

UPDATED: AJAX FAQ? And: How to Style the AJAX tab control's tabs: complete information

UPDATE April 08, 2009: for the latest version of this post, with up-to-date info on styling the Tab control, see my just updated Blog post -- the info below is somewhat outdated and does not have some additional details I have added to the Blog post.   First of all, I would like to suggest that the AJAX section of the ASP.NET forums have its own FAQ section. I was going to post this in the general ASP.NET FAQ, but it didn't really fit, and there was no AJAX FAQ, so I'm posting it here. Next: I have been looking for details on how to style the Tabs in the AJAX Toolkit's Tab control for over a week now. I have found information that is misleading, incomplete, outdated, and just plain wrong. And nowhere have I come across all the information needed to make it work in one place. So, I am posting this here. I hope that an AJAX FAQ can be created, and this post moved there.   I am including some background information, about the difficulties people are having in finding information on styling the tabs, first; after that I will include the complete instructions for styling the tabs. First: the information on the documentation page for styling the tabs is misleading at best, as well as incomplete. The docs tell you that you can simply add your styles to your project as CSS, and neglect to tell you that you must add a "CssClass" attribu

How to invalidate one control based on information in a second control

An expiration date is required for a license unless it is a lifetime license.  I have two controls; a ComboBox for the license type and a DateTimePicker for expiration date.  I have created a class called RequiredExpirationDateValidationRule. The only way to invalidate just the DateTimePicker appears to be to place the RequiredExpirationDateValidationRule in the binding for the SelectedDate property of the DateTimePicker.  However, I can't get the SelectedItem property of the ComboBox to see if I have a lifetime license type selected.  So I have to place the RequiredExpirationDateValidationRule in a BindingGroup that includes both the ComboBox and the DateTimePicker.  But now the DateTimePicker is not invalidated by the RequiredExpirationDateValidationRule when it returns a false ValidationResult. How do I solve this problem?

Login control displays error message even after successful login... How come?

I am using .net framework 2.0 witn C#. Am using the login and the CreateUserWizard and the situation is like this.

1) login.aspx page has the login control and i have a hyperlink on the same page saying 'sign up now' which when clicked redirects to the register.aspx page where i have place the createUserWizard control

2) As a new user i click on the 'sign up now' and register myself.

3) I come back to the login.aspx page and login with my new username & password.

It displays the following message 'Your login attempt was not successful. Please try again' although it is successful. How do i know this?? I placed the 'Login Name' control over the top of my page where its displaying the username with which i logged in.

i.e it displays the error msg and my user name ( which means my login was successful right?)

4) Apart from this when i logout and try to login again with the same username it displays the same error msg BUT this time it really does not login in. That username & password does not work anymore and i have to create a new one and its a cycle again from Step2.

Where am i going wrong?

Adding Dynamic Rows in ASP.NET GridView Control with TextBoxes and with Delete functionality

In my previous examples, I have demonstrated on how to add dynamic rows in GridView control with TextBoxes and how to save the values into the database. Now, seems that most of the developers are asking if how to add a delete functionality with it. So in this example, I'm going to show on how to delete a certain row in the dynamic GridView with TextBoxes.

Accessing the different controls inside a GridView control

how we can access a particular control which resides inside a GridView control. In this article I will show you how you can access different controls inside a GridView control. We will see how we can access a TextBox control, a DropDownList control and a ListBox control. If you are working with ASP.NET 1.X then you might want to check out my article Accessing Different Controls Inside a DataGrid.

In-Depth look at the GridView Control

In the last article we looked at few of the new controls available in Asp.net 2.0. We also talked about Grid View Control which has replaced the Asp.net 1.1 DataGrid control for good. In this article we will examine more features of the Grid View control. In this article we will see some of the common operations that can be performed using the GridView control. Apart from these operations there are many more functions that can be performed on the control and which we will see in the later articles

ASP.NET repeater control - databind with style

even used the inline editing features, which I at the time thought was the coolest way possible to write ASP.NET code ( I managed to write code to hide all other rows and only show the current one - the row being edited). With a nice looking EditTemplate it looked indeed very slick but it really turned into giant and hard to manage code behind files.

Creating Paging for a Repeater Control

A common question is "How do I implement paging within a Repeater?" Although the beauty of the Repeater control is its flexibility, you're on your own for building most functions. ASP.NET 2.0 has included some new controls that provide paging, as does the DataGrid in ASP.NET 1.1. However, this tip shows you how to roll your own paging for a simple data viewer.

Using TemplateFields in the GridView Control

The GridView is composed of a set of fields that indicate what properties from the DataSource are to be included in the rendered output along with how the data will be displayed. The simplest field type is the BoundField, which displays a data value as text. Other field types display the data using alternate HTML elements. The CheckBoxField, for example, renders as a checkbox whose checked state depends on the value of a specified data field; the ImageField renders an image whose image source is based upon a specified data field. Hyperlinks and buttons whose state depends on an underlying data field value can be rendered using the HyperLinkField and ButtonField field types.
