AD scavenging removed SQL's Virtual Name removed causing connectivity failure

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 14, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Got into a production down scenario when AD scavenging removed the SQL Server's Virual Server Name got removed from DNS. This made the TCP connetivity failures (both windows and SQL, so this is not SSPI context issue) when the client's tried to connect using the Name. The connectivity succeeded on IP address and we have got Alias as a remedy for now.

We are asking the AD guys to add the record into Active Directory. But the AD guys are asking for an official documentation that says that there is no straight method from inside SQL to add the name to DNS (just like what the cluster setup does) and we have add it manually to DNS. Does anyone know of an "official microsoft" documentation around this?

SharePoint Workflow E-mail Hyperlink has the Spaces Between Two Words Are Removed

I have a very simple Workflow, that includes href link to Infopath form.
If the form name includes spaces, the URL redirects to a The Form has been Closed message, indicating that it cant find that form.
In our scenario, the file name of the document/form in SharePoint when saved is called "Travel Request - <submit date>"  as noted with spaces.
The Hyperlink URL in the email generated by the workflow appears to encode all values in the name after the first two words (after Request).  See below.  after the word Request the spaces are encoded properly.     its replacing the first space with it appears %0d%0a (CR LF)
The URL below is what is displayed when right clicking, and selecting Edit Hyperlink in the email

I can reproduce this in development and production.  Any ideas on how this can be resolved?

Content-Encoding Headers Being Removed?

Hello everyone. I've got a question.So I have an HttpModule that compresses the response with either gzip or deflate. Margin on div removed after async postback with UpdatePanel

Hi I have a series of div's inside an update panel, these divs have a margin-bottom defined in css. In IE8, when I do a async postback these margins are all removed. All the other styles are fine. If I turn on compatibility mode this does not happen. In Google Chrome the margins are maintained correctly after the async postbacks. Any idea why this is happening? -- Christian

Error handling: writing database errors to a table that will not get removed by a rollback

I have an error handler sproc that issues a RAISERROR statement.  I would like for this sproc to write error messages to a table.  No problem so far.  What if there is a nested transaction with several ROLLBACKs?  If the code is only 1 level deep the error handler sproc can write to the error message table after the ROLLBACK.  If the code is 2 or more levels deep and an error occurs then what is written to the error message table might get rolled back if an error occurs after returning to the 1st level.  What I thought I would like to do is to have the error handler spawn a sub-process that would record the error message, where the sub-process would not be affected by any subsequent ROLLBACKs in the calling sproc.  Thoughts?

dbowner permission being removed overnight

Here is the problem I have:

I have an event on a list that create a timer job. Because the users do not have permission to create timer jobs, the code impersonates a new user I have created (lets call him elevatedtimer). I have given elevatedtimer farm admin, but the event would not work until I also gave him dbowner on the Admin_Content DB through SQL. The situation is, once I give him this access, it works fine and can create timer jobs as expected, however the following morning the event fails on creating a timer job, and evevatedtimer's dbowner permission has been removed from the database. This has happened 2 or 3 days in a row. Once I set that permission again, it works fine.

What could possibly be doing this? Is there a SP timer job that goes through and cleans up DB permissions? this account is not being used for anything else except running this event code, its not a service account for anything else. Should he be getting access to the Admin_Content db anyway because he is a farm admin?

Thanks in advance

dynamic fields added/removed depending on user selection

Is it possible to dynamically add/remove fields upon creating an item in a list?

For example:
If user selects from drop down list and chooses "Booked"

and a date field name "Booked Date" will dynamically pop up underneath.

And if user selects a different choice, the date field will dissapear.

Can someone point me to anything that can be of help?

I searched around and noticed that this can be achieved via javascript using the ows.js object model?

Thank you for your help.

SELECT DISTINCT and INNER JOIN causing failure

edit: SQL Server 2008

INSERT CompanySerialNumbers
SELECT DISTINCT h.TagName, h.Value, Entry = '5', MIN(h.DateTime)
FROM LineNumber L
INNER REMOTE JOIN INSQL.RunTime.dbo.StringHistory h ON L.Tagname = h.Tagname
WHERE L.Line = 'L155' AND h.Value != 'NULL' AND NULLIF (h.Value,'') !- 'NULL'
GROUP BY h.TagName, Value

So the goal of this is to, first, compare the input Line against a database (LineNumber) containing all Tagnames and which Line they relate to.  Then look through the StringHistory database for all those Tagnames, and return only the distinct rows in the select statement.  The error(s) I am getting is/are:

OLE DB provider "INSQL" for linked server "INSQL" returned message "History queries must contain at least one valid tagname".

Cannot execute the query "SELECT tbl11007.DateTime Co11015.Tagname etc" against OLE DB provider "INSQL" for linked server "INSQL".

I have a similar query tested and working, but isn't doing a SELECT DISTINCT, just a SELECT.  I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what the problem is.

Can't install SQL 2008 if we previously installed SQL 2008 and removed it???

We installed SQL 2008 and uninstalled it.  Now we can't install SQL 2008.  This seems to be consisten with other servers.  Generally, you get one shot at SQL 2008.  I have a Microsoft case open, but they can't figure it out.  Anyone have any ideas?

MaskedEditExtender, text removed if you lose focus and set focus back on textbox

I have a MaskedEditExtender with Mask="(999) 999-9999".

Now my problem is, if someone goes into the textbox and enters

Then they leave the textbox, and then see that they forgot to enter the area code, if they go back in there to enter the area code, it starts overwritting the other numbers instead of just adding to them.

SharePoint Desiger 2010 Workflow causing Gantt view failure?

I would love to know if anyone seen the following and found a workaround?

  1. Create an Issue Tracker list and a Tasks list
  2. Add a very simple workflow to the Issue Tracker list using SPD 2010 to:
    1. Create an Item in the Tasks list
    2. Update the Issue Tracker list item (e.g. to set it Issue Status value to Resolved)
  3. On the Issue Tracker list try to now view the list using a Gantt view (you will have to create one)

At this point we are seeing errors rendering the Gantt view and the ULS logs seem to indicate that the error is from some code that is trying to parse a multi-value column, and as best we can make out, the column it seems to be failing on is the Property Bag (MetaInfo) column. The peculiar thing is that the Task list's Gantt view does render (with the same type of values in the MetaInfo column).

Weird one, and I would greatly appreciate it if anyone has a solution they can share!

SSAS Deployment Wizard - Data Source connection string userid and Password getting removed

I have an SSAS database (Analysis Services 2005) which connects to Oracle for the data. I have the userid and password
saved in the connection string.

If I deploy the cube from Visual Studio I DON't have to manually edit the Data Source in the server to input the userid and password. The information is retained.

If I do a build and then deploy .asdatabase file using Deployment Wizard (Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Deployment.exe), the connection information dissappears. I have "Remove Passwords" = False in Project configuration. So when you build the project there will be a file with extension .assecurityinformation which holds the encrypted security info. Somehow

deployment wizard doesn't look at this file.

After the build I execute this command

Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Deployment.exe  .\Project.asdatabase /s:.\Deployment.log

I tried interactively and silent mode. Either way I cannot deploy the project with the userid and password in it.

Any clue?

User controls are not being removed from the main form control

I have the following piece of code:

foreach (Control ct in this.Controls) { if (ct is uctAssignment) { ct.Hide(); ((uctAssignment)ct).CloseMe(); }

  public void CloseMe()
If I have 15 controls to be deleted, it only deletes about 4 or 5 at a time, such that I have to envlose the above foreach loop inside a for loop.

In addition, when I make a call to Control.Hide() inside a similar loop, I can observe the same behavior.

Does anyone know why is it behaving like that?

Any ideas?

Removed text boxes from within loginview control and now nothing is returned via ValidateUser.

I removed two textboxes (textbox_LoginName and textbox_Password) and a button (button_Login) from a LoginView control by cutting and pasting. I placed them within a panel. In the code behind for the login file I removed the FindResource method that I had to use while the controls were buried within the LoginView control. This allowed my to simply use the Text properties of the textboxes as the parameters for the ValidateUser method.

The ValidateUser method was working prior to making the changes. Now, however, when called if the user is a legitimate username and password it returns no user at all - just empty strings/nulls. If the login credentials are incorrect it behaves as normal.

Here is my code:

 protected void button_Login_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        // Validate user against the Membership framework user store.
        if (Membership.ValidateUser(textbox_LoginName.Text, textbox_Password.Text))
            string myUser = User.Identity.Name;
