No Return Type for a Stored Procedure in a Linq to SQL Data Layer

Hello. First, I don't know if this is the right forum section to post this in, but I couldn't fine a more suitable one. Feel free to move this if it's totally worng. I have a weird problem when using LINQ to SQL and Store Procedures with a return value... The problem is that when I drag my SP's onto the "Methods Pane" the property field "Return Type" is set to (None) and greyed out. And here's the most weird thing... I created a test SP yesterday wich returned SCOPE_IDENTITY() and it worked flawlessly. Dragged it onto the "Methods Pane", could play with the return type property (hence it was not greyed out) and everything was working out nice. I used a ISingleResult<T> and could fetch the .ReturnValue... Today I was going to contiune to create the rest of the SP's i needed with a return type but today when I drag my Store Procedures to my Methods Pane, I couldn't access the Return Type property... I even dragged the SAME procedure I used yesterday (wich then worked great) and now I can't get the dbml-layer to notice that there is a return value... I've tried to create new solutions, new Data Layers, used different databases/servers, but still the same problem... Don't really know if it's LINQ or something else that's causing this... This is how part of my SP wich I used yesterday to test looks

xml secondary data source used for drop down selection how do I return additional fields to form bas

I received some much needed assistance from this forum in the past. My current situation is that I have a xml data connection to a sharepoint list over an employee database that works fine. It allow me to connect to a view on the sharepoint list correctly and display the info which is a drop down on a last name field. I now need to be able to select a last name such as Doe and have other fields such as job code be populated on the form from the same sharepoing list I have already connected to. Any direction is greatly appreciated.

ListView DataPager with SQL-Statements that already return only paged data.

As far as I understand the ListView-Control and the DataPager-Control, they work like this: The ListView gets its datarows from its data source, then the DataPager causes the ListView to display only a subset of those rows.

So what, when I want to use custom databinding for the ListView, that *already* gets the certain subset from SQL-Server (for better performance). Can I and how can I use the DataPager then?

Thanx, S.

Linq - add data to database then email user the details

Hi all

I'm not sure how to structure the code for this but what I want to do is be able to add data to a database, and once this has completed successfully, then email the user to say the details have been added successfully to the database.

I need to:

1. Check that the relevant data has been added into the database then

2. Email the details of the relevant data when completed.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Create ID (uniqueid?) from two fields when data is entered

I need to create an ID from two fields when they are entered into the db for the first time.  I thought Uniqueidentifer would do this, but it looks like uniqueidentifier is random and i have no control of the process.

My user will enter 4 letters into a column called INIT and 4 numbers into a column called NUMB.  What I would like to do is create an id by combining those fields.

How can I do this?

LINQ with GridView and edit fields

My project includes a grid view which displays information of inventory items (Assets), data is quried from AssetTable. The GridView has a command field to allow editing, below is a description of the tables and how data is displayed

BuildingTable: (BuildingID, BuildingName)

AssetTable: (BuildingID,..,....,....)

ItemTemplate: Using a LINQ query I join the two table and displays in a label control a string which includes BuildingID and BuildingName (5 North Building)

 EditItemTemplate: Using a LINQ query I populate a DropDownList with strings of BuildingID and BuildingName same as above.
Here issue which I need to resolve:
1. ItemTemplate display the correct information (BuildingID BuildingName) but when I switch to EditItemTemplate the pair that is
displayed is the first one on the list, how do I make is scroll to the item which was displayed in the label ?
<asp:CommandField ShowEditButton="True" >
                    <ControlStyle Wi

Need Syntax To Make Results of LINQ Union Return Non-Generic Type

I have the below SQL which works just fine:

SELECT     Message, CreateDate, AccountId, AlertTypeId
FROM       dbo.Alerts
SELECT     TOP (100) PERCENT Status, CreateDate, AccountId,
                          (SELECT     10 AS Expr1) AS AlertTypeId
FROM         dbo.StatusUpdates
WHERE AccountId = PassedInParameter

I have been going about trying to convert the above into a LINQ method and am having problems with return types.
As the above SQL illustrates, I am querying two distinct LINQ tables - Alerts and StatusUpdates -
and then attempting to perform a Union on them. In order to do the union in LINQ, I have to have agreeing types. So, I
am using "var" to make the results of "alerts" and "updates" generic before the union.

public IList GetStatusUpdatesAsAlertsByAccountId<T>(Int32 accountId)
            using (WorkbookDataContext dc = _conn.GetCont

The type 'System.Data.Linq.DataContext' is defined in an assembly that is not referenced. You must

This is frustrating, and I don't know how to solve it.

I have a strange problem. I am adding a LinqDatasource object, and set the context:

        protected void LinqDataSource_ContextCreating(object sender, LinqDataSourceContextEventArgs e)
            e.ObjectInstance = new KaruselaDataContext(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ConnectionString);

Then I get this error:
The type 'System.Data.Linq.DataContext' is defined in an assembly that is not referenced. You must add a reference to assembly 'System.Data.Linq, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'.

On web.config I already have this:
<add assembly="System.Data.Linq, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"/>

NOTE: The datacontext is in a different project (DLL proect) where I added a refernce to System.Data.Linq.

is there another way adding a refernce to a web project? or only though teh web.config?

Posting data to ASMX and return Object for jQuery

I am using fluent NHibernate with WebForms and I am trying to build a page where I allow a user to post a status update on their profile page and I a using a .asmx WebService to post the data to the database and then returnig a StatusUpdate instance to the page to be used by jQuery. I have a couple problems.

1) First off when I return a string from the WebService(i was testing) the textbox where the user enters their status doesnt empty the contents. And since the page doesnt refresh even if I manally clear out the textbox and put in something else, it still posts the previous status to the database again. How do I fix this?

2) Secondly, when I return the StatusUpdate Object from the Webservice I cant the results to display anything. Like I sad, Im using jQuery to make an AJX call to the WebService.

Here is my code:

User Profile Page:

Status: <asp:Label ID="status" runat="server"></asp:Label><span style="font-size:.7em;"><asp:Label ID="statustime" runat="server"></asp:Label></span><br />
<textarea id="statusBox" rows="3" cols="40"></textarea><br />
<input type="button" value="Update Status" onclick="SetStatus(); return false;

Data Points: LINQ Projection Queries and Alternatives in WCF Services

LINQ's ability to project randomly shaped data into anonymous types can be a blessing and a source of frustration, says Julie Lerman. It's great when you just need to grab a special view of your data, but it can be problematic in certain circumstances. She explains what the limitations are and how to get around them.

Data Points: Precompiling LINQ Queries

Did you know that by precompiling LINQ queries you might actually be degrading your app's performance if you're not careful? Julie Lerman explains how to ensure you're not re-precompiling queries each time and losing the expected performance benefits across post-backs, short-lived service operations and other code where critical instances are going out of scope.

Cutting Edge: Custom Data Control Fields

In ASP. NET 2. 0, the GridView and DetailsView controls are designed to work together. They don't merely provide complementary services, they also share a number of helper classes and components. The output of the GridView control consists of a sequence of rows, each with a fixed number of columns.
