No Servers listed under Database Engine in SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Where to begin. It's late so I hope I can be clear. I have installed SQL Server 2008. I am running Windows Server 2008 R2. I have installed SQL Server four times and I continue to have issues connecting to the Database Engine. Installation has gone without a problem at least to my knowledge I have not been presented with any errors. I have also created a local administrator account called "spadmin" to use to connect to the SQL Server database and to use with SharePoint 2010. Which brings me to the reason why I want to run SQL Server - I want to evaluate the latest SharePoint Server 2010 and WSS. Unfortunately, I have not been able to go beyond installing SQL Server and connecting to the database, because there is no database instance showing under the Database Engine, except under Integration Services. I have the following services installed: SQL Acitivey Directory Helper Service SQL Full-text-Filder Daemon Launcher SQL Server SQL Server Agent SQL Server Analysis Service SQL Server Browser SQL Server Integration Services 10.0 SQL Server Reporting Services SQL Server VSS Writer Am I missing something? I have been following several online instructions on how to install SQL Server 2008 and I can't seem to find where I may have gone wrong. After I install SQL Server 2008 am I supposed to see the default instance (MSSQLSERVER) listed under the Database Eng

MERGE command w/ linked servers & udfs

Hi guys - I have a MERGE statement I'm trying to fight with and losing. I'm  calling data from 2 linked servers and one of them has a user defined functions on it.. I have database A on one server (2008 R2) - the one with the UDFs and the source of the MERGE command. And database B on the other server (2008 sp1) - the target. The source of the MERGE does contain a call to a table function in server A. When both databases are on the same server, it runs fine and I'm not entirely sure how to fix it so I can get it to run between linked servers. I've tried both using OPENQUERY and just a normal statement...on the "normal" statement (Query #1) I get "Incorrect syntax near 'MERGE'. You may need to set the compatibility level of the current database" when I run it "normally" . Which the compatibility of both 2008 and 2008R2 are set to 100. When i try with OPENQUERY (#2) I get "Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'AS" . It is a dynamic query because I need to pass in my database names. @A and @B are the linked server names. Query #1 (the "normal" one just using MERGE) DECLARE @A VARCHAR(50) DECLARE @B VARCHAR(50) DECLARE @LastUpdated DATETIME DECLARE @query VARCHAR(8000) SET @A = ? SET @B = ? SET @LastUpdated = ? SET @query = ' MERGE '+@B+'.database.dbo.tblFieldVersion as target USING ( SELECT c.x, st

Database Mirroring: How To Set Up Servers?

Hi, I am currently reading into Database Mirroring... A few questions regarding the transaction log came up my mind when trying to find a setup/disaster recovery strategy:   Imagine this situation: I am already running a SQL Server database... Now I want to add synchronized database mirroring by adding a mirror database to the setup. Which prerequisites are required on the mirror database? Is it sufficient to use an empty database? Or do I need to restore a backup of the principal database first?   Same for disaster recovery: Imagine the primary database goes offline and the Witness designates the mirror database as the principal database. After re-installing Windows/SQL Server on the former principal machine, which prerequisites are required to let it become the mirror of the new principal database? Do I need to create a current backup of the new principal database? Or will an old backup of the old principal database do? Or will even an empty database on the new machine do the job?   Finally, this is a more general question I have, regarding the transaction log: The mirror database is fed from the principal database's transaction log... How can I make sure that all necessary transaction log records are still available in the transaction log? I couldn't find information on how records are deleted from the transaction log file... Does the transaction

Deploying one database to many servers

Is there an easy way to deploy the same database to multiple servers?

We have a database with some reference tables and maintenance scripts, including backup procedures and we wanted to deploy that same database to multiple servers.

Can you think of an easy way of doing that?

Insert into merge replication database issue...

I've been fighting with merge replication for the past few days over the same hurdle and I can't seem to figure this one out.  I create the publication that publishes 36 articles (28 of which are download only).  After creating the publication, I can replicate perfectly normal as expected.  When replicating, I pass in a project number through the host_name() variable and filter the data based on that value and all works great.  I've replicated about 10 different projects, modified data, and merged the changes back without issue.

Where I'm running into an issue is when I add a new project to the mix.  I have an SSIS project that takes data and puts the data into a staging area.  From there, I have an ETL that pulls the data from the staging area and inserts it into the the database that is set up with merge replication.  Being that these new records will need to be replicated in the future, I do a simple insert into, select from so that the replication triggers are fired and these rows are tracked.

After the data load (~150,000 rows in total among 5 tables), I go to replicate this new project however it never gets past the step

"Retrieving subscription information."

It eventually times out and never transfers the data.  When I go back and try to rep

Multiple database support with Entity Framework

One of the features introduced in Entity Framework is being database independent. Which mean each database provider can support Entity Framework by implementing its provider.

This feature allows you build applications independent from the underplaying database provider. In this post I'm going to show how to build an application that support multiple databases using same conceptual model made by Entity Framework.

Export Visio Database Table Names to Excel

If you use the Enterprise Architect edition of Microsoft Visio for data modeling regularly, then there is a good chance that at some point you've wanted to export just the table names into Excel. You might want to do this to map logical ERD entities to physical data model tables, track project status by entity, or track overlap between database versions.

MS SQL Server: Disconnect Users From Database - Kill User Session

If you ever wanted to restore your database from a SQL backup file (.bak), but there are still users connected to your database, the backup operation will fail causing the error: Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use.
