What I mean is that when I use Server Explorer Window on VS2008 every thing is fine (I can even insert and modify data from server explorer), in fact, when I use Datatables and I choose to preview data through TableAdapters (Design Time) I get data, and also can run the queries from there directly to the data base, but when I'm debbugin the application I get this error.

-when I run Sql Server Management Studio, its also fine, even though I can't see the Sql instance on the server (or any of my partners machine) when I try to browse them. But if I type the server path (servername\instancename) everything is OK.

SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified

Hi

I am receiving an intermittent error as described in the thread title. I have checked several other threads and the commons solutions seem to be...

check the SQL browser service is running

check the spelling of the instance name

check that the correct UDP port is open on the firewall

All of the above are ok in my case but where my case differs is that the error is intermittent - restarting the server solves the problem but sooner or later, it reocurrs. This specificaly relates to an asp.net application - even when I start getting the error, the web app runs fine over the network but running it in debug or testing / creating connection strings gives error 26. I am all out of ideas with this and it's really not convenient to shut down the server in the middle of a working day. I intended to include the full error text at the end of this question but in the time it has taken me to type this, it has started working again (what the ____!!??!). I am running SQL Server 2008 Express with Visual Studio 2010. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Steve

SQL Server Network Interfaces Error 26 - while failing over SQL Server 2008 R2

Before I explain the issue I am facing, I would like to say that I did read the post at  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2007/05/13/sql-network-interfaces-error-26-error-locating-server-instance-specified.aspx but in my case the problem is transient (lasts for approximately two minutes after a failover) so items 1-3 in the list of troubleshooting steps do not seem to make sense. As to 4 and 5, the named instances use non-default ports (2433 and 3433 respectively), so I do not know how to tailor the PortQry command for that. I tried  portqry.exe -n ServerA,2433-p UDP -e 1434 and  portqry.exe -n ServerA,2433 -p UDP -e 2434 and it failed both times with a "Failed to resolve name to IP address" while the server was up and serving database requests The same thing happened when I tried it with the failover server as well. ***The issue I am facing*** I am using Enterprise Library 4.1 to connect to a SQL Server 2008 R2 database with a mirror. My connection string itself is as below (with dummy values for all fields): "Data Source=ServerA;Failover Partner=ServerB;Initial Catalog=DBName;User ID=uid;Password=pwd;Connect Timeout=5" Sample .NET code is as below (with modifications to instantiate all variables locally to provide context): SqlDatabase db = new SqlDatabase(ConnectionString); SqlConnection cn = (SqlConnection)db

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server

Hi,

I've created a small website with a simple sqlite database using vwd 2010 .net 4. In dev and test envionments everything works fine, however when i promote to my hosting provider i receive the following error:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

I've been configuring the connection strings (autogenerated from entity framework and attached db) but unable to get it working on the hosting provider, I'm assuming it's related to permissions but not entirely sure how to resolve - here's the web.config as it stands:

<add name

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server.

Well, there are many post about this issues but mine is a bit different that I have this problem on my hosting which I can't configure their MS SQL Server. The only thing I can access is Plesk control panel. I have uploaded my mdf file in httpdocs/App_Data, while I establishing the connection it say..

Adding named instance of SQL Server 2005 failed - "Error Locating Server/Instance Specified"

We are trying to add a named instance to our Windows 2003 R2 x64 SP1/SQL Server 2005 SP3 server.  It has been running for about 3 years now with a single (default) instance.  When trying to add a named instance, it fails when it gets to the point where it is Updating System Databases - "SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration.  The error was:[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Refer to server error logs..."  We are using the local service account for both the default and new named instance.  Allow Remote Connections to This Server is enabled on the default instance.

In Services, the new SQL Server service has started, but I cannot start the SQL Server Agent - it says it started and then stopped.  I cannot access the instance with SMS.  I rebooted the server and tried the process again with identical results.  I have successfully added a new instance to my test SQL Server using the same install files. Can anyone shed some light in this issue?  Thanks.

a network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to sql server

I installed a new installation of SQL 2008R2 server on Windows 2008R2 server. First I can not connect to it with SQL management Studio 2005 so I wanted to install 2008R2 and I can not install it and that first. I used a PC with SQL management Studio 2008R2 but I can not connect to the database and I receive the following error "a network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to sql server, the server was not found or was not accessible. Verfiy the instance name is correct and that SQL server is configured to allow remote connection. error 40 - could not open a connection to SQL server Microsoft SQL server, error 2

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server.

I have looked all over and tried every suggestion to resolve this issue but it persists:

I am trying to connect to an sql server on a windows 7 machine from an asp.net application.  When I am in Visual Studio I can use the connection in sqldatasource controls and everything is fine when I test the queries.  However, when I attempt to run the application I get the error.

I've tried:

1) Turning on named pipes on the database server and restarting the server.

2) Stopping all firewalls on the server.

3) Making sure that the server is configured to allow remote connections.

My connectionstring is:

Data Source=MYSERVERNAME\mssqlserver;Initial Catalog=NEMO;User ID=sa;Password=password

I have tried using portqryv2 to see whats happening on the UDP port that sql server uses as suggested in another post but gets a syntax error from the utility.

I am baffled by this one and would greatly appreciate some help.

Thanks.

Error Locating Server Instance Specified

Hi I am getting the error

SQLState = 08001, NativeError = -1
Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Ser
ver/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF].
SQLState = 08001, NativeError = -1
Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a
 connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may
be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow
remote connections.
SQLState = S1T00, NativeError = 0
Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Login timeout expired

when running

D:\MyFolder>bcp ACME_POS.dbo.Employees in Employees.dat -f Employees-n..xml -T -S Localhost\SQLExpress

now i enabled all the steps for allowing remote connections using SQL server surface area configuration.. I enabled the browser and restarted the service...

I think there is a problem with Localhost\SQLExpress or should it be localhost\MSSQLEXPRESS how do i know if its MSSQLEXPRESS or SQLEXPRESS I am using SQL server 2005

I have SQL server 2008 R2 version running on local server. I am able to connect to the SQL server using Windows authentication. But when i try to create OLEDB connection in SSIS package i am getting above error.

SQL Browser is running.

I have even checked SQL server configuration and Named pipes are enabled. But still i am getting the same error.

Server 2008 R2 -> Failed to decrypt using provider 'RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider'. Error mess

So I am using the aspnet_regiis.exe tool to encrypt sections of the web.config in my asp.net applications and services.  I have done this for years successfully on Windows Server 2003 (IIS 6).  However I just moved some apps over to Windows Server 2008 R2 (with IIS 7.5) and I am now receiving the following error at runtime:

"Server was unable to process request. ---> Failed to decrypt using provider 'RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider'. Error message from the provider: Bad Data."

Now I am quite familiar with this process and am stumped at what I have missed this time around.  I have done ALL of the following which typically suffices for the process on the server. PLEASE READ ALL AND DO NOT PROVIDE RESPONSES OR LINKS FOR THINGS I HAVE ALREADY DONE Thanks!!  Wink

  1. Imported the keys to the server using aspnet_regiis -pi  Result: Success
  2. Given FULL permission (using -full switch) using aspnet_regiis -pa to ALL of the following accounts  Result: Success
