Several Content Types with same fields but different lookups

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 13, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Hi folks,

I have a requirement where a List needs several Content Types, each of which will inherit some standard columns from a parent content type:

e.g. these are the content types and fields:
ParentConentType: Make, Model, SerialNumber
PCContentType: HasExternalKeyboard
TillContentType: CashDrawerType

In this example, if I create a new PCContentType, I will be presented with a form containing fields: Make, Model, SerialNumber and HasExternalKeyboard. If I create a new TillContentType, I will be presented with a form containing fields: Make, Model, SerialNumber andCashDrawerType.

So far, all good. What I need though is the Make and Model to be different lookup lists for PCContentType and TillContentType.

The ParentContentType can have Make and Model fields set as lookups on large lists containing all the possible values for Make and Model.

If I create the fields at child content type level, then they won't have the same column name (which will make it hard to show this info in views).

So what are my options?

1) create the lookups on the parent Content Type pointing at large lists (so all values are allowable) and implement a "cascade drop down" in javascript on the page to restrict the entries

2) something I don't know about yet to allow the child content type to re-define the lookup

Problem with Update of Sharepoint Taxonomy Fields in custom developed Content Types

Dear all, we developed an solution on sharepoint 2010 for one of our customers with custom lists and content types with fields from the managed meta data store. As recommended we developed everything in features & solutions so that easy deployment is possible. Adding metadata to the termstore seems to work without problems, but today we stepped over an confusing issue: Our customer changed the default label of an term in the metadata term store, but the label did not change in listviews and detailviews of items in the specific sitecollection. In editview we see the correct label. After searching a while we discovered the connection between the sitecollection and the term store, the hidden Taxonomylist (/Lists/TaxonomyHiddenList/AllItems.aspx) in the sitecollection, which seems to map the terms. After testing we discovered that the term/label did also not change in the hidden taxonomy list. The Timerjob “Taxonomy Update Scheduler“ is running hourly with success and we also tried to start the job manually, but the label did not change in the hidden list. Also there are no errors in the logfiles in verbose mode. We also tested to create a managed metadata field manually, put it in a list and after that, changed the label. For whatever reason the update of labels on manually created fields works without a problem. Our lists, content types etc get created pr

Installation of Server Admin "Fabulous 40" Templates -

I saw a new feature appear after the templates were installed by our farm administrator. I didn't see anything in the documentation about it, but it seems like I should activate it.

Should I activate the "Fields and Content Types for the Windows SharePoint Services Application Templates" feature?

Are there any drawbacks?

Any other words of wisdom?

Duplicate Fields during list creation from content types and site columns

I am trying to create a List in Sharepoint 2010 using Site Columns and Content Types. It results in creating duplicate fields in the list for the Site Columns used. Here is the details description of what I was doing.

I have created two site columns

<Field Type="Number" DisplayName="Start Coordinate" Required="TRUE" EnforceUniqueValues="FALSE" Indexed="FALSE"
Group="QMS" ID="{A3F2D108-11B5-4B49-9633-338D27227E12}"
Name="StartCoordinate" Overwrite="TRUE" />

<Field Type="Number" DisplayName="End Coordinate" Required="TRUE" EnforceUniqueValues="FALSE" Indexed="FALSE"
Group="QMS" ID="{06B927BB-C354-4A0A-AE88-9C14E55EAB27}"
Name="EndCoordinate" Overwrite="TRUE" />

Then added these to a new content type I

Multiple Content Types in a single list - how to edit fields outside a content type

I have a single list and created two content types on the list in order to reduce the amount of visible fields a user sees when entering a form.  Once the form is filled out by one group with the limited data, an alert is sent to another team that adds to the list item using the larger set of fields defined by the second content type.  Unfortunately it seems that the edit burron remembers ihe initial content type that the entry was created with.  Is there another url to access the edit button for the same entry using the alternate content typr?

How do I Filter on fields and not Record Limits for External Content Types

I have created an External Content Type that connects to an SQL server/table.  I would like to set a filter on CompanyType so that my external list only shows records where CompanyType = Owner.  The only examples of Filter examples that I have found are dealing with record counts.

How to set the order of custom fields in custom list definition of Multiple Content Types

Hi all,

First of all I am sorry for my poor english.

I have a custom list definition and I have mentioned two content types in the "Schema.xml" file of this list. I need to change the order of fields in NewForm.aspx and EditForm.aspx.

For e.g. I have two content types ContentType1 and ContentType2. ContentType2 is inheriting ContentType1.

Fields of ContentType1 are

1. Field1

2. Field2

and Fields of ContentType2 are

1. Field3

2 Field4

When these fields display on new form the order of fields is

1. Field1

2. Field2

3. Field3

4. Field4

But I need to change the order of field by

1. Field1

2. Field3

3. Field2

4. Field4

Can anyone help me to change the display order of fields in new and edit form?

Thanks & Regards,

SharePoint Tutorial - Content Types

SharePoint content types provide users with a way to manage and organize content in a more meaningful way. It's a reusable of settings you want to apply to a particular type of document in a library or item in a list.

Add new content types to multiple libraries

We use MOSS for document management and content types for document types (i.e. specification, quote, PO etc.)).  We would like to add additional content types to our libraries.  I was hoping to find a tool that would help me to propagate these new content types ad I am not a programmer.

Please could someone enlighten me a little bit on what content types are and how they are used?
