Running SQL and IIS on one server

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 12, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I always heard that it's not recommended to run SQL server and IIS on one physical server. Can somebody clarify in details/examples disadvantages of doing this. I understand that SQL and IIS would be sharing the same system resources but it doesn't mean that this would cause any problems or does it? We have a large database (55GB), but I am not able to prove that the database residing on one server with IIS (which serves the website for this database) is in conflict with IIS.

Thank you,

Detect if code is running inside SQL Server.

Can managed code "detect" if it is running in the normal .Net CLR or the special SQL Server CLR? Is there some environment flag or field we can look at at runtime? Thanks Cap'n

Adomd.net "A Connection Cannot be Made , Ensure that the server is running"

Hi I am connecting to my local cube from vb.net windows forms application. This form is called several times within my application. While in the application, i close the form and reopen it frequently.  The conAdomd.Open() functions without any error for the first three times . As in , when i launch the windows forms application for the third time, i get an error "A connection cannot be made, Please ensure that the server is running". I have tried installing the patches, but it does'nt help me.  Request help from forum members. net.tcp://localhost:80/MyService client/server errors while IIS is running - even though all Net.TCP

Hello, I am trying to create a simple WCF client/server solution in two Windows Forms projects, respectively.  I am using net.tcp binding on port 80 and have enabled the port sharing property.  My NET.TCP Port Sharing service is running.  I am using Windows 7 x64 and logged in as an administrator.  I've added my username to the smvchost configuration files, in both Framework and Framework 64 directories. I also have IIS running on port 80. However, there seems to be a conflict between net.tcp on port 80 and IIS on port 80 simultaneously.  My understanding was that the Net.TCP Port Sharing is supposed to be the solution for this very scenario. Here are the specific issues: 1.  I start the server in debug mode, which works fine.  I then try to connect with the client, and get the error: "You have tried to create a channel to a service that does not support .Net Framing.  It is possible that you are encountering an HTTP endpoint".  This seems to imply that the NET.TCP Port Sharing is not forwarding the request to my WCF server, and instead is encountering IIS.  This is the first problem. 2.  The second issue is that the Server starts fine in Visual Studio in debug mode, however when I try to run it as a compiled EXE (and right-click - run as admin) it errors "The TransportMana

Hi All, Using Merge Replication over the web (https). Server is running SQL Server 2008, client using SQL Server Express 2008. SQL server management studio 2008 freezes when running a query to Grid result

Hello, I've got problems when I run a Query to a grid result using SQL server management studio 2008 under W7 pro. When I execute the query, the first part of the grid returns, but then it freezes. The query should present a double resultset and contains approx 6100 records, devided over 2 grids. Strange enough, the query runs fine when I export to TXT or to a file. It seems though that the problem is building the grid. When it occurs I cannot end the application bij shutting down de SSMS window, but have to kill the Ssms.exe. In task manager I see only 25% CPU usage and approx 20% memory usage. Nothing exiting there I guess. Suggestions anybody? Error when running an SQL script to restore a database on SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

Hi, At work, I use SQL Server 2008 Express running on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. At home, I also use SQL Server 2008 Express running on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. Whenever I do work on the database at work, I usually restore the database at home (or vice versa) I have been using the following SQL scripts to back up the database and to restore the same database (at work or at home). BackupRealEstate.sql USE Master BACKUP DATABASE [RealEstate] TO DISK = N'F:\My Documents\My Database\RealEstate.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'RealEstate-Full Database Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 GO RestoreRealEstate.sql USE Master RESTORE DATABASE [RealEstate] FROM DISK = N'F:\My Documents\My Database\RealEstate.bak' WITH  FILE = 1, NOUNLOAD, REPLACE, STATS = 10 GO Everything worked fine until I replaced my 8yo home computer with a newer and faster one. My new home computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium and I use the latest SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. When I tried to run the above restore SQL script, I got the following error message: Msg 3101, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. There was no other application/process using this database. Can someone please help me? Regards,

Running a copy of Central Administration on a second server, how do you do this?

According to Microsoft's details on capacity management and planning below - you can have a copy of Central administration running on a second server, I always though you could only have CA running on one server. How do you have a copy running on a second server? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607864.aspx Quote from site - "App-2 is a dedicated Search query server. It also contains a copy of Central Administration and For high availability, Central Administration is also installed on a front-end Web server on another host." Obviously you don't run the installation software as you have multiple copies of the CA database and config databases but you couldn't have a restored site collection either as this would be out of date as soon as you installed it so how do they propose you do the above, they actually state having two copies and the original in the link above?

I have MSSQLSERVER (Running - \\D1XFZ9C1\SQLEXPRESS-MSSQL Server) running. Under my Programs I have MicroSoft SQL Server 2005 but the only items listed are Configuration Tools. Am I missing something? I am trying to run a CREATE DATABASE query in order to create a database for PRO WPF using VB 2008 (Visual Studio 2008) but I don't know where to run it. Can anyone please help as I am new to this.

What are the memory limits of SQL Server 2008 Workgroup edition (32 bit/non-R2) running on Windows S

We have a situation where one of our customers is running Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition 32bit with 8 GBs of physical RAM. Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 64bit is not an immediate option (although I wish it were). All the documentation about SQL Server 2008 Workgroup edition indicates that the new version will address 4 GBs of memory however it does not distinguish between 32bit vs 64bit.

Previously we have run SQL Workgroup 2005 under Windows 2003 and have applied the /3gb switch in boot.ini to get SQL to recognize the maximum amount of memory possible. Now that we are using SQL 2008 with the /pae switch, do we need to still specify the /3gb switch or can SQL 2008 32bit actually see more than the 3GBs and address 4? I haven't been able to find any information on this configuration.

SQL Server 2008 Management Studio locking up while not running anything

Restart Server that DB is running on

Restart workstation that SQL Server 2008 Management Studio is running on

Start SQL Server 2008 and open file I'm editing

Edit the SQL file while while monitoring memory and processor usage on the workstation

Processor starts to spike, intellisense stops working, memory usage begins to climb to an absurd amount ~7G, management studio becomes almost nonresponsive (i.e. I can type and the text takes 30 seconds to 5 minutes to show up)

After about 30 mintues, memory usage drops to around 1.5G and management studio becomes semi-usable again.  Intellisense sometimes goes back to working, sometimes everything has to be restarted again.

I've been working on this exact setup for 7 months now and this problem is new.  No, I am not executing any statements - I am editing text only.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard edition running from one Core

Hi, I have a client who we just upgraded to Win 2008 R2 Standard Edition and SQL 2008 R2 Standard Edition

They are complaining about System performance.

Looks like SQl runs only on 1 core, maybe sometime 2 which is maxed out.

"Automatically set Processors affinity mask for all processors" is checked and also

"Automatically set I/O affinity mask for all processors" is checked...

The server was maxed out with memory a few days ago but looks to me that that is something taht SQL 2k8 R2 does. The server has got 16GB ram

Pretty urgent. Got 3 hours to solve it.
