Excel new document template opens in Notepad

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 12, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I have a document library with a custom document template. The template is an .XLTX file that I created using Excel 2010. It is associated to the library via a custom content type.

The template worked without any problems for at least a couple of weeks. Then, about a week ago, SharePoint started issuing the following warning when trying to create a new document using the template:

"The document could not be created. The required application may not be installed properly, or the template for this document library cannot be opened. Please try the following:

  1. Check the General Settings for this document library for the name of the template, and install the application necessary for opening the template. If the application was set to install on first use, run the application and then try creating a new document again.

  2. If you have permission to modifyu this document library, go to General Settings for the library and configure a new template."

This issue happens for myself, and some of my colleagues but not everyone. It happens on both SharePoint 2007, and 2010. We all have MS Office 2010 (32-bit) installed on our client machines. I have already tried changing the file extension application association for .XLS, .XLSX, .XLTX and .XLT to make extra sure that they are all pointing to Excel 2010. It didn't

Cannot Use Excel Spreadsheet (xlsx) as Template for Content Types or Document Libraries

I have created a document library, specifying that the 'Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet' be used as the document template.  When I try to create a new document by selecting the template from the 'new Document' drop down, I get a message stating that 'The document could not be created.  The required application may not be installed properly, or the template for this document library cannot be opened.' Additionally, the template is opened as template[1].xltx in notepad (with all of the funny characters you would expect).

I have Office Professional Plus 2010 installed on my computer, and I am able to open XLSX and XLTX files from SharePoint (just not from the 'new document' button).  I also have no problem with PowerPoint or Word templates in SharePoint. I am also able to open the excel template by navigating to the template in explorer view.  I've found that if I open Excel before I attempt to create a new document, the template will open in Excel, however the document is titled 'Template1' instead of 'Document1' as would be expected.  Any thoughts?

Document Library "export to spreadsheet" doesn't export all columns in Excel 2003

Hi, we are working with MOSS 2007, Infopath Forms Services, KPIs and Excel 2003. There is a view for some data of the Infopath forms which has to be exported to Excel by our users, but some columns are not exported - without any error message. If I try to export it to Excel 2007 everything is exported as expected, but our users have to use Excel 2003. Any idea?

How to open an excel document in a webbrowser control

Hi,  I have an XBAP app that we would like to be able to open an Excel doc in a WebBrowser control but instead we always get prompted to opne in Excel.  Is this possible?  Here is what I have tried.  The reports are in SharePoint but we want to show them in our own application not SharePoint.       System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser ReportView = new System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser();     WindowsFormsHost ReportViewHost = new WindowsFormsHost(); ReportView.Navigate(_fileName,   "_self", postBytes, "Content-Type: application/vnd.m?s-excel"); ReportViewHost.Child = ReportView;   _filename would be something like http://localhost/shared%20documents/myfile.xslsx Thanks for any suggestions. How to export gridview to excel template

I have a gridview that I need to export to Excel. Excel is not installed on the server, but I would like to put a template on the server so that when the user exports the data it will use the template and open the file on the user's local machine. To make things slightly more complex, I need to export the data to Sheet2 because Sheet1 needs to be a graph (thus the need for the template). I cannot use any third party software and I have no ability to modify anything on the server. This is used in a corporate environment on a shared server that I don't have any control over. Any sample code would be very helpful. I'm running ASP.NET 3.5 with Visual Studio 2008.

How To "Upload a new document template" to Content Type via Web Service

I hope someone can help me. Let me begin by saying that I'm not a programmer; so I 'may' not get the terminology exactly right, but hopefully someone will know what I mean. I am using SharePoint 2010 along with a 3rd party application that I'm using for creating, managing and executing workflows.  The workflow application I'm using is Nintex Workflow 2010.  As such, I can only use functions, services, commands...etc...that are offered to me by that application. Anyway, what I am trying to do is simply replace a document template that is being used for a particular content type with another document template. For this I believe I need to use the Webs.UpdateContentTypeXmlDocument Method.  More information is provided here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/websvcwebs.webs.updatecontenttypexmldocument.aspx). The Webs.UpdateContentTypeXmlDocument method requires two parameters..."contentTypeId" and "newDocument". "contentTypeId" - I have got the Content Type ID by clicking on the content type and viewing the URL shown in my browser.  So, I am confident that my content type id is correct and is "0x010100C392CF11DE923A4E8AB9018B0A42119303". "newDocument" - The MSDN article states...'A string that represents the XML document to replace the existing XML document.".  To be honest, I'm not 100%

"max-template-document-size" change not working as expected

Hi There I have a 2 node MOSS 2007 deployment hosting 5 webapps. The one web app I am having a problem with is a customised solution from a 3rd party. The product users need to save sites as templates, to which they get an error saying that the template is too large. I have run the max-template-document-size stsadm command and increased the value from 5mb to 50mb but it seems the change is not taking effect. The error page says the limit is still 5mb. When I use stsadm getproperty it shows that the value has in fact increased. I have made sure that I am doing this on the correct webapp. The save as template operation works if I do not select the "save content" option. The sites have no content so the cannot be greater than 50mb. Am I missing something extremely obvious?

In data view web part - how to display document name with link that opens lookup document rather tha

I have a list with a lookup column to create relationships with documents in a separate library. I am creating a data view web part to display each item in the list. One of the fields I want to display is the document field (the lookup column). I want this to be in the form of the related document's name with link to directly open the source document itself (Word, PPT, ...). Now I am only managing to display the document name linked to opening the document's display form of the related document library, and then I have to click the document's name there to open it. Alas one unnecessary click too many. Any wize tips? Henning

Opening New Word Document with Template Selection in C#

From a Windows Forms Application, I need to launch Word. There is an option to create a new document template in the Application. So to implement this, I need to launch the template selection window (You get it when you click File->New in 2007). Once the user selects the template, a new document is created with the selected template. How do I achieve this using Word Object Model?

"Document not Saved" in Excel 2007 - using Windows XP Pro and Office 2007 Pro

Hello folks,   I am having an issue with all of my Excel documents saving from the network drive.  Whether I open the document then "save as" 97- 2003 or just do a straight "save" it will always come up as "Document not saved".  I open some Word files and get a different error, "There has been a network or file permission error.  The network connection may be lost (the drive contents here)"  Now I am online and can do emails and open other documents from the network so I know my network connection is not lost.  I work right off the LAN and not wireless.   I did take the file in both Excel and Word and copy them to the local drive then try the open / save as and it will work great like that no problem.  Although this is a "work around" is there something I am missing?  Our corporation has many new machines running Windows XP Pro along with Office 2007 Pro and this was the first I had seen this problem with.  This is a laptop, but again others work fine ( that I know of)   Thanks, Mark

Saving Document With Column items applied via excel macro

I have an excel macro that pulls data down from columns within worksheets that will take an excel spreadsheet and save it as a PDF file into seperate folders based off criteria set in the files. Getting the files into the proper directory is not the problem i'm having. When the script executes it saves the documents directly to our sharepoint site, but the custom columns A B C D etc are all blank and some are 'required' items which sets the document as checked out until i go into the list and enter the required data. Is there anyway to make this macro export as PDF and set the required data for me in the sharepoint column so it checks the documents in for me? I'm figuring this is a simple set of meta datatags but I don't know the syntax for them and I didn't find anything like this on the forum anywhere else. ActiveSheet.ExportAsFixedFormat Type:=xlTypePDF, Filename:= _ "http://DirectoryStructureHere/corporate%20BoFi/pdfs/" & NewFileName & ".pdf" _ , Quality:=xlQualityStandard, IncludeDocProperties:=True, IgnorePrintAreas _ :=False, OpenAfterPublish:=False 'Exports the print area as a PDF document named the new filename "Modified: to sharepoint"

Document is read-only in SharePoint, but user sees "check out" option in Office 2007 / Word / Excel

I am finding that when there is a document library in SharePoint with checkin/checkout required, if a user with read-only ("Visitor") permissions opens a document from that library, the document will open as read-only in Word, Excel, etc., but the user will see the "Server Document" bar with the message "To modify this document, you must check it out" and the "check out" button.  When the user tries to check the document out, they are asked to authenticate, and then receive the error "Cannot perform this operation.  The file has been deleted or someone else has it checked out."    How is it possible to prevent a user with read-only rights in SharePoint from seeing the "Check out" option in Word or Excel?

InfoPath / ActiveX error when using person selector field in Word template off SharePoint document l

I have created an out-of-the-box document library on a SharePoint 2010 site.  I left Microsoft Word Document selected as the Document Template.  I then added a person or group column and a multiple lines of text column to the document library. I then went into Library Settings --> Advanced Settings and clicked on Edit Template, opening the template in Word.  I created my template and added the two new columns to the document.  I did this using the Quick Parts --> Document Property --> [column name] feature under the Insert tab in Word.  I then saved the template back to SharePoint. Upon opening the template or creating a new document from the template, I get the following dialog box: --------------------------- Microsoft Office InfoPath --------------------------- One or more ActiveX controls could not be displayed because either: 1) Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page, or 2) You have blocked a publisher of one of the controls. As a result, the page might not display correctly. --------------------------- OK   --------------------------- I've searched around (I believe fairly extensively) and have not run into anyone else with the same issue.  Some have mentioned a similar error when creating a custom document information panel in InfoPath, and suggested lowered ActiveX security setti
