Application Pools when is it okay to share them when installing SharePoint 2010 in production

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 12, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Hi, I read the MS stuff stating that running ten Application pools (not web apps) on a server is roughly about the maximum you should have running on a server (okay it alls depends on the amount of RAM and the actual box) but my question is as such, when installing SP 2010 and all the services, for instance for a client and they want the services configured whether they are going to use them or not. You could end up with over well over 10 application pools, so what services are okay to share an application pool and which should have have their own application pool. Is there some info out there on best practice remember i am asking this for production builds not test as I see that the Stand Alone SP2010 Wizard Installation runs all the services under the same application pool.

Some guidence or info would be appreciated. Thanks

How to develop Common Content or Application pages in Sharepoint 2010, with respect to the customiz

I have a top level site and subsites (which might be around 10). Where as the top level site represents a common landing page and each sub site represents a client site to which user will be directed upon login. This is a PUBLISHING web site. I need to design to start with common pages across all clients and if there is a need let the client to customize the common page accroding to their need. This is a PUBLISHING site so all these common pages should have Web parts zones with authoring capabilities. What is the best way of achieving this?

User Profile Application Failing in SharePoint 2010 (14.0.4514.1004)

I keep getting the following error "This User Profile Application's connection is currently not available. The Application Pool or User Profile Service may not have been started. Please contact your administrator.". As sugested by Travis at http://blogs.pointbridge.com/Blogs/nielsen_travis/pages/default.aspx I tried commenting the two security nodes, removing its' allowInsecureTransport attributes, and setting then False. As Lionel wrote in his comment I tried also modifying "Central Administration / Application Management / Configure service application associations / Application Proxy Group" of my share point web application. My application pool for User Profile Service Application seems working and User Profile Service status is Started. One thing I remember about my issue, first I tried creating User Profile Service Application I got some error message and tried creating User Profile Service Application again. It gave me some other exception and than I navigated somehow to the "Manage service applications" page and there the desired User Profile Service Application was magically on the list with status Started. I thought - that's great! But when I clicked the User Profile Service Application link I got the nasty red error I mentioned at the beginning. Any ideas?Regards,Dawid Ireno

SharePoint 2010 Search Service Application: "All Content" scope contains 0 items?

I've encountered a nasty bug in our setup. Our Search Service Application manages to crawl all content just fine. However, the scopes don't work. We've got a total of 570 items currently in our crawl database. 350 of these are of class 'People', and appear in the 'People' scope. The remaining 220 items should appear in 'All Content' as part of the intra (sites, documents etc), however the 'All Content' scope reports 0 items. I've tried the following: -Creating custom scopes (still 0 items) -Recreating the Search Service Application twice -Tried different accounts as the content access account. -Ensuring that the content access accounts do have 'full read policy' -Checked the crawl log for successful content (such as sites and documents). However, despite my efforts I still get 0 items for 'All Content'.  Has anyone else encountered this problem, or do you have any recommendation for us? Currently I don't see any other option than to reinstall everything.

problem rename sharepoint 2010 search service application admin database

Hi all, i have a problem that hopefully someone has an answer to.  i am not too familiar with sharepoint so please excuse my ignorance. we have sharepoint 2010 on a windows 2008r2 server.  everything seems to work fine.  but as you know, the default database names are horrendous.  i have managed to rename all of them, except for the "search service application" admin database. the default is: Search_Service_Application_DB_<guid> the other 2 databases (crawl and property) were renamed without a problem. we are following the article from technet on how to rename the search service admin db (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-nz/library/ff851878%28en-us%29.aspx).  it says to enter the following command: $searchapp | Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication -DatabaseName "new database name" -DatabaseServer "dbserver" however, i get an error about identity being null.  no big deal, i add the -Identity switch and the name of my search service application.  but the real problem comes the error it throws:   Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication : The requested database move was aborted as the associated search application is not paused. At line:1 char:54 + $searchapp | Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication <<<<  -Identity "Search Service Application" -DatabaseName "ShareP

Search Service Application missing in SharePoint 2010

I installed SharePoint 2010 (Enterprise edition), enabled Enterprise features but it is missing Search Service Application when I look under Central Administration > Application Management > Manage Service Application.   When I click on New it doesn't even list "Search Service Application".    When I goto Upgrade and Patch Management > Check Product and Patch Installation Status, it tells me that "Microsoft Search Server 2010 Core" was Installed.  Under Manage services of server, "Sharepoint Foundation Search" is started.  Does anyone have an idea why the "Search Service Application" is missing and how can I install it?

Migrating large, existing company share drives to SharePoint 2010.

My company has terabytes of documents stored out on a large share drive.  In implementing SharePoint 2010, one of the great features with documents is versioning, permissions etc.  Currently I'm planning on each department to slowly upload documents to SharePoint 2010 under their department sites/site collections as it makes sense and of course create any new documents there in their site document libraries.  99% of every document uploaded to SharePoint will be from this old share drive.  Is there a better way to migrate this content into SharePoint than having people upload documents individually (or "upload multiple files")?  I know I can add the share drive to the SharePoint search results, or add links to the share drive location, but we really need the versioning on documents and have things show up in SharePoint like it normally would in a list.  Any guidance is much appreciated. Thanks!
