Breakpoints not working - no Bin\debug folders or *.PDB

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 12, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

My copy of VS2005 is completely ignoring breakpoints - this happens to many many people as can be seen from a search on Google.

In trying one possible solution I started to look for my .PDB file as Debug>Windows > Modules was showing that many symbols were not being loaded: also my PDB file could not be found.

1) Does anyone know where the PDB file (holding data used by the debugger) usually is located ?

2) My web site app has no BIN\Debug folders (nor do other apps that I create).  I have read contradictory information - should I have these and where ?

3) foolish Q:  anyone have any foolproof methods of getting breakpoints to work ? (and yes, debug is set to "True").

Breakpoints stopped working during debugging in vs.net 2005

I had the strangest bug yesterday while trying to debug in vs.net 2005.... I had an '05 web application.  I clicked the "Run" button to start debugging, and the webpage popped up fine.  I could run through the pages fine.  Everything seemed fine....UNTIL!   Until I tried to start inserting breakpoints into my code.  The application ignored them.  In addition, I noticed my little green visual studio "Start Debugging" arrow (which is normally greyed out while in debug mode) was green.  It was as if visual studio completely detached itself from my website I was trying to debug. After playing around with it for a while, I realized I also had a vs.net 2008 solution open as well.  My '08 solution wasn't in debug mode or anything, it was just sitting there open.  I just happened to close it, not thinking anything of it, and presto!  My 2005 debugger started working again! So basically, I can't debug an '05 solution (or at least a web solution, as that's all I tried) while I also have an '08 solution open.  Anyone know why?  Is there anything I can do to prevent this?   Thanks.

webmatrix and nopcommerce debug not working

Hi All, I installed Web Matrix and then installed the NopCommerce site from the web gallery. I set a break point in the default.aspx page_load but when I try to debug it skips the break point because it says "~no symbols loaded..." When I pressed play button initially it asked if I wanted to enable debugging and I answered yes. Am I missing something else?   Thanks,   rod.

VS2010 has stopped working error adding new item to folders in MVC2

 Hello,

I am using VS2010 Pro in 64 bit Windows 7. When I add a new item to a folder in an ASP.NET MVC2 project, VS frequently crashes with a "Visual Studio has stopped working" error and then closes down. If I re-open the project the item is not visible in the MVC project folder, (but it is visible to windows explorer although I think it's corrupted). If I then try to add the item again, it warns me that it already exists and asks to overwrite, choosing yes to overwrite usually works OK.  When adding an .edmx item it is more problematic, I can't overwrite it but because I know that there actually is a file in the folder, (although not visible and albeit corrupted), I can add it as an existing item and then choose "update model from database" to get it to work. This error is happening more and more frequently.

Debug WCF Service hosted on local IIS not working

I have one solution WCFSampleSolution and it has all my projects - Web Service, Client and Website. The structure is something like:

 + WCFSampleSolution
    - C:\WCFSample\Website
    - WCFService
    - WCFWebClient

I created WCFService project for my services. It contains IService1.cs and Service1.cs. Then I hosted the service in IIS. I did this by creating a website and adding .svc and web.config files to the website project. Then published it in IIS. When I run http:\\MyMachineName\Website\Service.svc, it shows the service description. Then I create the web client that calls the webservice. I used the service reference to add the service. It calls a method of Service1. It works fine. But I amnot able to debug this program/setup. I verified the config files in WCFWebClient project and Website project and they have proper debug settings.

<compilation debug="true">

I put break points but control never goes to my seb service. I also tried attach process, but it also doesn't work. But I was able to debug one of my other WCF projects. The setup was little different. In that project I copied the .svc file and config in my web client and the debug works fine.

Please HELP!!

Breakpoints Not Working in VS2008: "No symbols have been loaded for this document."

Hi,

Unfortunately, I can't get my breakpoints to work when in debug mode in Visual Studio 2008 (ASP.NET 3.5, Windows 7, IIS7). The website compiles and opens in debug mode, but the breakpoints themselves generate the following error message:

"The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document."

There are some recommended solutions online, but for various reasons, either they haven't applied or I haven't been able to make them work. I've been trying to find the solution for about 12 hours now, and I'm getting desperate. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

(Note 1: This problem is specific to this website. I do have other websites that I open in VS2008 where the breakpoints work fine.)

(Note 2: There is only one website/project associated with this problem. This website does not have multiple projects.)

LINQ to SQL Debug Visualizer not working

I'm using Scutt's LINQ to SQL debug visualizer and it's not working.

I have also tried RV's LInQ to Entity debug Visualizer for Visual Studio 2010 and this one does not even show up when I hover the variable.

Any suggestion to get Scutt's visualizer working is greatly appreciated.

Working with SharePoint document libraries

Document libraries are collections of files that you can share with team members on a Web based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services. For example, you can create a library of common documents for a project, and team members can use their Web browsers to find the files, read them, and make comments. Users with Microsoft Office 2003 can check out and edit the files as if they resided on a local or network drive.

By default, your team Web site comes with a built-in document library named Shared Documents, which is listed on the Quick Launch bar as well as on the Documents and Lists page.

Working with DropDownList and ListBox Controls in ASP.NET

SharePoint document migration challenges when migrating files and folders

There are several challenges when migrating documents to Microsoft SharePoint. While these challenges can be overcome, they are a real pain if the migration source, content and file systems are not SharePoint friendly.

Server side validation of Fileupload control not working

I've tried this method in my code behind to try and validate that the Fileupload control has a file or not. I get the error message the the event "Server Validate" cannot be found. Can anyone tell why? Thanks.

Public Sub CustomValidator1_ServerValidate(ByVal source As Object, ByVal args As System.Web.UI.WebControls.ServerValidateEventArgs) Handles CustomValidator1.ServerValidate

' Get file name

Dim uploadAvatar As FileUpload = DirectCast(AdvertisementForm.FindControl("uploadAvatar"), FileUpload)

Dim UploadFileName As String = uploadAvatar.PostedFile.FileName

        If UploadFileName = "" Then
' There is no file selected
            args.IsValid = False
        Else
Dim Extension As String = UploadFileName.Substring(UploadFileName.L

Row command working on all rows not selected one?

Hi,

I have this code that hides a column in a gridview.  (The column houses another nested gridview).

Protected Sub GridView1_RowCommand(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.GridViewCommandEventArgs) Handles GridView1.RowCommand
        If e.CommandName = "Select" Then
            If GridView1.Columns(0).Visible = False Then
                GridView1.Columns(0).Visible = True
            Else
                GridView1.Columns(0).Visible = False
            End If
        End If
    End Sub

The trouble is that if I click the select link on one row that action to hide is carried out on all rows.  How can I set this up so that it only hides the row that is selected?

Thanks.
