Sharepoint Authentication Best Practice

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 12, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I've been asked to put up a Sharepoint site that will be accessed by customers.  They plan on making logins for these customers so they can have customized information on their pages.   I really don't want the licensing expense of making a few thousand Active Directory users.   Is there a better way to authenticate these people?  I've been looking into IAS and AD LDS.

Changing an authentication of SharePoint site from SQL-FBA to Active Directory

Hi,      We are using MOSS 2007. I have customized a web application using Custom web part, features and ASPX pages. we have configured SQL-Form based Authentication for this site. I have also used FBA user management functionality from Codeplex. I have created some groups and my application (custom aspx page) is referencing these groups to send an email to specific person as per his role for certail events.        I have a requirement to migrate this set up on other server and change the authentication from SQL-FBA to Active Directory. So if I have to change the Authentication from SQL-FBA to AD then what are the steps I have to follow to make this happen?      I would appreciate any help on this. Thanks, Patav

Using ONLY User Certificates for SharePoint 2010 Authentication/Authorization

Hello, I am relatively new to SharePoint, and was wondering how I can accomplish using only user certificates to authenticate (and eventually authorize) access to the SharePoint 2010 Server (not just IIS). My Environment currently looks like this:  - SharePoint is SSL-enabled - User Browser Certificates (generated using OpenSSL) successfully authenticate to the IIS Server - SharePoint uses Basic Authentication (user/password based on AD credentials) I need to: - Authenticate the user to SharePoint using the User Certificate from my browser (in other words, no password authentication to access the SharePoint website, but use the certificate that was used by iis to be able to log into SharePoint) I am assuming I must use some sort of claims-based authentication.  Ideally, I would like to use ONLY the certification itself as a source of Authorized Repository for authentication. However, I am also open to having the user certificate be linked to Active Directory users as well.  I have done some research on this but am still lost as to how to approach this problem. Is there anyone that has done this or can assist me in getting this to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

SharePoint crawling - Windows authentication failing for STS4?

In a Sharepoint 2010 installation, we are trying to crawl the content of a small, single-node SharePoint installation. The crawling is partially successful. We are able to retrieve data delivered from the web services (_vti_bin/sitedata.asmx), but when the crawler tries to access the full page contents, it fails. The error message shown in the Crawl Log is: The crawler could not communicate with the server. Check that the server is available and that the firewall access is configured correctly. The error which is logged in the ULS is: 08/27/2010 01:52:02.92     mssdmn.exe (0x0A7C)                         0x03E4    SharePoint Server Search          HTTP Protocol Handler             du54    High        CHttpAccessorHelper::InitRequestInternal - unexpected status (500) on request for 'http://staging.dsr.dk/_layouts/error.aspx' Authentication 1.  [httpacchelper.cxx:657]  d:\office\source\search\native\gather\protocols\http\httpacchelper.cxx      08/27/2010 01:52:02.92     mssdmn.exe (0x0A7C)          &n

SharePoint - Report Server - Client Certificate authentication

Hi,I have a SharePoint site collection which requires client certificates. On the server I have configured Reporting Services in integration mode.I can call reports on other site collections which don't require client certificates but not on the site which does. On the site which requires client certificates the pages fail with the following error message:'An unexpected error occurred while connecting to the report server. Verify that the report server is available and configured for SharePoint integrated mode. --> The request failed with HTTP status 403: forbidden'The error message indicates that SharePoint doesn't call the web service with a client certificate. Does anyone know how I can configure SharePoint to use a client certificate?Any help is greatly appreciated.Adam

Best way to implement authentication and authorization for a sharepoint 2010 website.

Hi I come across different authentication methods in Sharepoint 2010. The sharepoint website we are develpoing as of now is Intranet. Later we are planning to move it to Internet(Public) site. What will be the best way to implement authentication and authorization for our website. If windows authentication(Classic mode authentication) is default for a sharepoint website (2010) , I have a few questions ragarding windows authentication. 1) In case of windows authentication, where should we maintain  users? 2) In case of windows authentication, how are the users created? 3) In case of windows authentication, how can I perform authorization.   If we want to use FBA(Form based authentication) in sharepoint 2010, I have a few questions ragarding FBA in sharepoint 2010. 1) In case of FBA(using Claim based authentication) , if we want to use custom database(where we are storing user details and  roles) rather than bulitin SQL membership  provider, how can we achieve this? Can anyone provide some useful resources to implement authentication(Windows or FBA or dual) and authorization for a sharepoint 2010 website with sample code? Please reply ASAP. Thanks & Regards Mahendra Babu

Form based authentication Sharepoint 2007 gets redirected to login page

Hi We have sharepoint 2007 site deployed on Windows server 2008, IIS 7.0.  We extended the web application to enable forms based authentication referring to link http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb975136(office.12).aspx#MOSS2007FBAPart1_Intro, we selected Kerberos instead of NTLM, behavior is like, when user tries to login into the site using OOB login.aspx, user again gets redirected to the login page. We tried to extend the web application again but this time we selected NTLM, but this time farm account (also is application pool identity) is not able login and exhibits same behavior as above, but for other users we are able to login. Has anyone come across this behavior? can anyone please guide me in correct the behavior? Regards, RK  Radhakrishna

Sharing authentication Cookie between asp.net and sharepoint applications

Hi All, I have a requirement to share the authenication cookie between my asp.net application with sharepoint site. asp.net application and sharepoint appli are in the same domain and using the same custom authentication provider to login. I have used same cookie name and same machine key for two applications. But i could'nt see any progress.... My actual requirement is.... if i open my asp.net application and logged in, then in the next tab i will open sharepoint fba site.... then it shouldn't ask for credentials again, directly it should login with the credentials which i used for asp.net application. Thanks in advance.

SharePoint 2010 Claims Based Authentication - anonymous site is prompting for CBA auth when opening

Hi, I have CBA setup successfully on my sites.  One site is setup for anonymous access and I have disabled "client integration" on that web application. I have a list of MS Office documents on a wiki.  When I click on one I am asked to either save or open or cancel.  Saving works fine but when I choose open, it launches the associated MS Office app.  I am then prompted for a login from CBA.  I can click cancel and the logon screen appears again.  After clicking cancel the 2nd time the document appears in the MS Office app, Word in this case. My question is how do I prevent my users from being prompted for a CBA login when clicking on these files and opening them in the native app on their machine?      --TR
