Including an SQL Express Database File in a Setup Project

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 11, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I'm building a win app using VS 2008 in C# using an SQL Express 2005 DB.  What is the best way to include a SQL DB in a setup project.  Does the SQL need to have a .dbo or .mdf extension?  I'm new to SQL Server Express.

i dont know the default userID and password for SQLauthentication. As the express setup did not asked any credentials while installing SQL components

Updating sql express 2008 database table from an XML file.

I'll start off with the usual caveats.. new to the forum, new to programming, not a programmer by trade..just a dabbler

A little background..

I run a hockey pool for me and a few friends. I currently use Excel to produce everything. Every week I download a csv file from a stats reseller, update my pool, then run some macros to create web pages and upload those to my site. It works alright but I want to take my pool/site to the next level. So I decided to do a new site using ASP.NET and sql express.

My plan is to download an XML file from the same reseller and update my "Player" table every week with the "new" stats.

I used a Dataset, SqlDataAdapter, and the XML file from the reseller to populate my "Player" table in the beginning. It was pretty slick, pretty easy. My problem is I can't seem to figure out how to update my "Player" table with my new stats.

First I tried using the same Dataset/SqlAdapter but it threw a Primary Key exception, saying I couldn't insert that ID because it was already existing in the table. I can fill my dataset from the "Player" table change things and save it back to the "Player" table..but that's not what I want to do.

Can't attach my project database (.mdf file) using SQL Server Management Studio R2

Hi.  I've encountered a strange issue in SQL Server Management Studio (not the express version).  I had to uninstall SQL Server 2008 Developer in order to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer.  As a result of doing this, the database from one of my ASP.NET MVC projects is not attached to the database server.  I see the ".mdf" file in my project's AppData folder in Windows Explorer, but I can't navigate to it in SQL Server Management Studio.  I go to "C:\Users\<my name>" and the attach database interface will not let me go any further.  The folder that I need to access is "C:\Users\<my name>\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\NerdDinner\NerdDinner\App_Data".  How can I access this directory from SQL Server Management Studio?  Is there some sort of strange permission issue?  Thanks in advance for any help.

The file-size of website project contain blank database.mdf

I tested the file-size of my new website using VS 2008. The new website contains almost one blank page aspx and one “Database.mdf” with no record in database. “Database.mdf” contains one table, and the table has 2 columns with no record at all.

When I take a look the file-size of this website, total folder project size is 2.68 MB. The most file-size is at folder “App_Data” that is 2.67 MB. The breakdown file-size of “App_Data” is 2.2 MB for Database and 0.5 MB for Database_log. My questions are:

  • How much the file-size normally for the new website that is similar with my testing?
  • If there is something problem with my VS 2008 setup, please advise me how to fix it.

Thanks.

Does this look correct for saving a file/ new record to a database

So thank you for all your help so far, So I think i got this right,
but would like for you all to look it over to see if there is any
areas I might run into trouble with:

//using asp.net mvc 2
the table (sql server 2005, using entities framework)
"Pattern_Media"
table fields
"Pattern_Media_GUID  uniqueid
"Pattern_GUID  uniqueid
"Media varbinary(max)
"height int
"Width int
"Media_Type String (50)

the form:
<h2> Add Media to this pattern</h2>
<% Html.EnableClientValidation(); %>
<% Html.BeginForm("AddMedia", "Pattern", new { id= Model.Pattern_Guid} , FormMethod.Post, new {enctype = "multipart/form-data"}); %>

    <%: Html.Label("height") %>
    <%: Html.TextBox("height") %>

    <%: Html.Label("width") %>
    <%: Html.TextBox("width") %>

    <%: Html.Label("Media") %>
    <input type="file" id="Media" name="Media" />

    <input type="submit" name=

Can this code be setup to run against the whole database instead of just 1 record at a time?

We have made some changes to this code to start capturing 1 new field of data and updating it as new records are added. But there is currently about 120,000 records more or less.. those records of course dont have the new field populated with anything..

We would like to run this logic that already in place and run it against the tables to update the fields 1 time. I think to make it easier, if it can be setup to expect the "valueTwo" variable, so that we can run it againt the individual codes instead of doing all the records at one time.. there are codes that only have a few records, so it would be best to test initially against the small code group.

thanks.

            strSqual = "insert into trans (trans_type_name, trans_date,sys_id,mod_user_id,show_ind, remoteCode, techName) values('" & valueTwo & "','" & TransDate & "',"&strSystemID&", 1,'T', '" & dbQuote(strUser) & "', '" & strTechName & "')"

            getStaticRecordSet(strSqual)
            'get the new transaction_id out for just inserted alarm
            strSqual = "select max(transaction_id) as transaction_id from trans"
            set rst = getStaticRecordSet(strSqual)

Best Way to Upgrade Using Web Setup Project

Hi there,

I am using VS2005.

I don't have much experience with web setup projects, but I now need to create a decent windows installer in order to allow customers to install one of our web applications. I have created a simple web setup project and it works fine, but not when it comes to upgrades of the application.

If for instance I install version 1.0 on a machine, and then later I try to install version 2.0, I don't seem to have the control that I would like... I can specify in the web setup project that the installer must enforce an uninstall of previous version, but then all application files and logs are uninstalled as well. If I let the application just install itself over the older version, it seems to leave some old DLL's there - it then causes issues in the application because DLL version conflicts.

My basic requirement is that I would like th installer to upgrade the old version with all the files required, but leave any application and log files in tact - this way the customer won't have to reconfigure the application after install.

What is the best way to handle this?

Could not load file or assembly - Web Deployment Project

Hi,

I have the following projects in a solution :

- A Web Application

- A Class Library

- A Web Deployment project

The Web Application compiles and run fine when I don't go through the Web Deployment Project. However when I try to use that, I get the following error:

Error 1 An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for hibernate-configuration: Could not load file or assembly 'NHibernate' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. (F:\Folke\Folke.csproj_deploy\Release\web.config line 4) 1 1 Folke.csproj_deploy

This is the beginning of my Web.config:
